Abstract

The invention relates to a high pressure accumulator as fuel distribution pipe for common-rail systems with high pressure lines leading to solenoid-controlled injectors, with a thin-walled outer pipe, surrounding the fuel distribution pipe, with passage openings provided for the high pressure lines and with a rod-shaped tensioning element between distribution pipe and outer pipe, by way of which the high pressure line can be tightly braced to the distribution pipe by means of a union nut axially firmly supported at the free end of the high pressure line.

Description

1 High:pressure fuel distribution lpipe for a common-rail system 2286642
The invention relates to a high-pressure fuel distribution pipe for common-rail fuel injection systems for internal combustion engines, having a pressure space to which high-pressure lines adapted to be connected to injectors are connected.
A common-rail system with a fuel distribution pipe for high-pressure storage of the fuel and with high-pressure lines leading to solenoidvalvecontrolled injectors is known, for example, from US Patent 5,201,294.
Because of the high pressures prevailing, which are well above 1,000 bar. the connecting joints between the high-pressure lines and the fuel distribution pipe are not without their problems. Leaks occur and lead to impairment of the operation of the injection system.
The present invention seeks therefore to provide an economical, easily assembled connecting joint between the high-pressure lines and the fuel distribution pipe which permits permanent reliable sealing.
According to the present invention there is provided a thick-walled fuel distribution pipe for common-rail fuel injection systems, having a pressure space to which high-pressure lines adapted to be connected to injectors are connected, wherein the fuel distribution pipe is surrounded, with the interposition of a clamping body provided with receiving holes, by a thin-walled outer tube having passage openings for the high-pressure lines, and wherein a union nut is connected in an axially fixed manner to each high-pressure line in the direction of assembly so as to be screwed into each receiving hole, pressing the high-pressure line onto a sealing seat on the fuel distribution pipe in a sealing manner.
Preferably, the clamping body is elongate and extends at least approximately over the entire length of the outer tube, which is of approximately equal length to the fuel distribution pipe.
Preferably, for each high-pressure line the fuel distribution pipe has a radial hole which starts from the pressure space and has an outlet-side conical 2 sealing scat which is matched to a conical seating surface on the free end of the high-pressure line. In this case, adjoining the conical seating surface each high pressure line may include an external collar as a supporting surface for the union nut,, the external collar having a smaller diameter than the corresponding receiving hole in the clamping body.
By means of the measures according to the invention, a simple connecting joint is achieved without welds. When assembling the high-pressure line, the union nut has merely to be screwed into the clamping body situated between the fuel distribution pipe and the outer pipe, the end piece of the highpressure line thereby being pressed in a sealing manner onto the sealing seat on the fuel distribution pipe.
A connecting joint for a branch connector in a high-pressure fuel rail is known from DE 40 30 484 Aly in which the end of a branch pipe is also pressed against a conical abutment surface in a sealing manner by a clamping nut which is screwed into a connecting piece. In the case of this connecting joint, leaks when very high pressures, e.g. well above 1, 000 bar, occur cannot be ruled out and it is thus not possible to prevent fuel from leaking out.
FR 20 64 642 has furthermore disclosed a connecting joint in which connectors for a plurality of pressure lines are merely fixed on a distributor pipe by means of a clamping body.
An embodiment of the invention is explained in greater detail below with reference to the drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a fuel distribution pipe with connected high-pressure lines and Fig. 2 shows the embodiment in accordance with the line II-II in Fig. 1.
A high-pressure reservoir in accordance with Fig. 1 interacting with solenoid-valve-controlled injectors of an air-compressing internal combustion engine (not shown) comprises a seamlessly drawn steel tube as a fuel distribution pipe 1 (common rail). Connected to the fuel distribution pipe 1, which is of thick-walled design, are high-pressure lines 2 assigned to the injectors, these high-pressure lines having a union nut 3 at the free end.
The fuel distribution pipe 1 is surrounded by a thin-walled outer tube 4 which rests against it to a great extent. Provided between the outer tube 4 and L 3 the distribution pipe 1, which is of at least equal length, there is a rodshaped clamping body 5 which extends over the entire length of the outer tube and has receiving holes 6 for the union nuts 3 of the high- pressure lines 2. The clamping body 5 can be inserted loosely in between or be rigidly connected to the outer tube 4, which has passage openings 7 for the high-pressure lines 2 at the level of the threaded receiving holes 6.
At the free end, the high-pressure line 2 is upset to give a conical shape with an external collar 8, the conical seating surface 9 forming a sealing surface and the external collar 8 forming a bearing or supporting surface for the union nut 3, which is mounted in an easy-running manner on the high-pressure line 2. An axially fixed connection is thus obtained in the direction of assembly. The external collar 8 has a smaller diameter than the receiving hole 6.
Reference 10 denotes a pressure space in the fuel distribution pipe 1, leading off from which in the pipe are radially extending holes 11 which, on the outlet side, form a conical sealing seat 12 matched to the seating surface 9.
At one end, the fuel distribution pipe 1 is provided with a closure piece 13 and, at its other end, with a connecting joint 14 for a connecting line (not shown) emanating from a high-pressure pump.
In the assembly of the connecting joint, the union nut 3, which takes the high-pressure line 2 along with it, is screwed into the receiving hole in the rod-shaped clamping body 5. As soon as the conical seating surface 9 of the high-pressure line 2 comes to rest on the conical sealing seat 12 of the fuel distribution pipe 1, the outer tube 4 is clamped by screwing the union nut 3 in further, and the end piece of the high-pressure line 2 is simultaneously pressed onto the conical sealing seat 12 in a sealing manner.

Claims (5)

Claims
1. A thick-walled fuel distribution pipe for common-rail fuel injection systems, having a pressure space to which high-pressure lines adapted to be connected to injectors are connected, wherein the fuel distribution pipe is surrounded, with the interposition of a clamping body provided with receiving holes, by a thin-walled outer tube having passage openings for the high-pressure lines, and wherein a union nut is connected in an axially fixed manner to each high-pressure line in the direction of assembly so as to be screwed into each receiving hole, pressing the highpressure line onto a sealing seat on the fliel distribution pipe in a sealing manner.
2. A fuel distribution pipe according to Claim 1, wherein the clamping body is elongate and extends at least approximately over the entire length of the outer tube,, which is of approximately equal length to the fuel distribution pipe.

A fuel distribution pipe according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein for each high-pressure line the fuel distribution pipe has a radial hole which starts from the pressure space and has an outlet-side conical sealing seat which is matched to a conical seating surface on the free end of the high-pressure line.
4. A fuel distribution pipe according to Claim 3, wherein adjoining the conical seating surface each high pressure line includes an external collar as a supporting surface for the union nut, the external collar having a smaller diameter than the corresponding receiving hole in the clamping body.
5. A thick-walled fuel distribution pipe for common-rail fuel injection systems, substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
