Abstract

A semi-permeable membrane comprising a thin sheet of microporous polytetrafluoroethylene with a non volatile material absorbed in the microporous sheet.

Description

SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANES Field of this Invention This invention relates to semi-permeable membranes and the means of making such membranes.
Backaround of this Invention Semi-permeable membranes are normally made of a solid material such as rubber or silicone rubber or plastic material.
An example of this is a semi-permeable membrane made of dimethyl silicone rubber. Semi-permeable membranes function by allowing diffusion of chemicals through them. The mechanism of diffusion requires the chemical to dissolve in the material of the membrane and to be emitted on the other side. An important feature of the function of the membrane is that the tendency to dissolve in the material of the membrane is specific for each chemical and may not be the same as other chemicals. Differences between tendency to dissolve and therefore diffusion rate allows the use of the semi-permeable membrane to alter the relative composition of components of mixtures of chemicals by diffusion through the membrane.
Summary of the Invention According to the present invention a semi-permeable membrane is formed by absorbing a liquid or solid in the pores of a very thin sheet of microporous polytetrafluoroethylene. The property of the membrane to separate chemicals depends upon the tendency to dissolve in the liquid or solid held in the pores of the microporous sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene. The property of the semi-permeable membrane to alter relative chemical composition can be varied by absorbing different materials into the pores.
Detailed Description of the- Invention A semi-permeable membrane is formed by absorbing a liquid or solid into the pores of a thin sheet of microporous polytetrafluoroethylene. The sheet may be any thickness up to 0.25mm . The liquid or solid absorbed can be any material with a low vapour pressure which will fill the pores and not evaporate.
The semi-permeable membrane so formed has the properties of the material absorbed. A specific example of such a material is polyethylene glycol 400. The material absorbed can be any material used as a "stationary phase" in the preparation of columns for gas chromatography.
