Abstract

Moulds, processes.-In order that the internal aggregate from which concrete walls or blocks are formed shall be exposed at the surface of the finished wall or block, a composition is used to contact with the face of the wall or block during casting or within two or three hours of same, this composition containing a reagent which prevents the setting of the cement at the wall or block surface. The composition is in the form of a colloidal paste, so that the reagent is slowly fed from the paste to the cement and does not interfere with the main wall or block aggregate. The composition may be plastered on the insides of the forms or mould walls before casting, or may be applied to the wall shortly after casting and before setting. A suitable composition is given as 10 grains of tannic acid added to 100 grams of starch boiled in one gallon of water. Sugar may be substituted or added with the acid, and also a hygroscopic salt such as calcium chloride, the amount of water being varied if necessary. A block treated in this manner is shown in Fig. 4 with the aggregate 5 exposed at the surface.
