Coiling; dies.-In coiling wire helically on a travelling mandrel wire, particularly for making close helices of tungsten for use in electric incandescent lamps, the mandrel wire is fed through an aperture in a guideway along the surface of which, on the side on which the mandrel wire enters the aperture, the wire to be coiled is conducted so as to be supported thereby. The wire 12 to be coiled is carried by a spool 10 mounted on a head 9, which is rotated on ball bearings 5, 6 in a bushing 3 secured in a housing 2. The guideway 15, which may be a diamond or other hard material when coiling tungsten wire, has a convex end projecting slightly from a guide box 14, which is secured to a column 22 fixed by a screw 23 in a longitudinally adjustable slide 19. The guide box may be adjusted vertically by raising the column and laterally by turning the column. The mandrel wire 13 is fed at a uniform speed through the hollow spindle 7 of the head 9 and through apertures in the guideway 15 and guide box 14 and passes over a roller 26 mounted on a forked arm secured by a screw 25 to the column 22. The wire 12 is led over a roller 11 carried by the head and engages with the convex surface of the guideway at an angle to the mandrel wire slightly less than a right angle. The guideway is heated so that the wire 12 is heated at the point where it is bent for the coiling operation and the mandrel wire also heated. The guide box for this purpose may be electrically heated by a coil 17 contained in a mantle 16 or the guide box may be in two parts to receive the coil. The guideway may be stationary or be carried by the coiling-head so as to rotate therewith round the mandrel wire as an axis.
