Impact pulverizers. -In a disintegrator for pulverizing sugar and other friable substances and of the type comprising beaters rotating within a stationary casing comprising relatively-movable sections and baffles consisting of separate elements each pertaining to the respective casing sections, the sections are both relatively hinged and completely separable and the lower section is rotatable about the axis of the machine and capable of complete removal from the interior beating mechanism, with or without means for retaining the lower section in various positions of rotation. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical casing formed in two halves or sections b, b<1>, Figs. 1 and 2, the upper section b being mounted on the lower section b<1> by means of hinges or pivots b<2> in open-ended slots b<20> and secured by bolts d<16>. The casing is carried by means of trunnions d<5>, Fig. 4, engaged by bosses d<15> projecting from bearings d<1> extending from the base casting d<2>, and caps d<4> secured to the trunnions by bolts d<6> hold the casing in position. The baffles e are inserted in annular grooves in the sections b, b<1> and secured by means of screws e<3> and lock-nuts e<4>. The upper section b carries the feed-hopper f<1> from which the sugar &c. is fed down an incline f<2> by means of a worm f<3> driven by spur gearing f<4>, f<5> from a shaft f<6> driven by a belt f' from the beater-shaft h. A pipe or trunk fitted with a wire-gauge sieve communicates with the feed-opening and serves as an inlet for air, which is sucked through the casing by a fan g<2> on the discharge end of the shaft h. After removing the upper section b, the lower section b<1> can be turned around the shaft h and held in the desired position by a pawl i engaging a ratchet i<1> on the section b<1>. The pawl i has a tail i<2> under the action of a spring i<3>, and by turning a catch i<4> the pawl can be put out of action. The exterior of the casing is provided with gills or vanes d<3> for air cooling purposes, and each section is fitted with eye-bolts d<7> for attachment of lifting-tackle.
