Abstract

An electric plug has a switch incorporated into its construction enabling a portable appliance to be switched off from the main supply whilst remaining plugged into a live supply. The switch may be a rocker, push button, toggle or "trip" switch. The plug may incorporate a fuse, a lamp to indicate current supply to the plug and a further lamp to indicate switched current supply from the plug. <IMAGE>

Description

PLUG IN CORPORATIL-G A SWITCH This invention relates to an electric plug incorporating a switch.
Electric plugs are a well known and accepted means of connecting portable electrical appliance: to a mains electricity supply.
The main disadvantage of the standard electric plug is that any portable appliance,bein6 so used, can onlg be switched off from the mains supply if the plug is being used in a switched socket outlet, i.e. a female socket which incorporates a switch on its external surface.
When used in an switched socket the appliance must be physicals unplugged from the socket or remain live. If a multiway adapter is being used between the socket and the plug it maybe the case that the other plugs connected to the multiway adapter need to remain livecongtantXy, for example to maintain timers or memory banks, when trying to remove a single plog from such a multiway adapter it is quite possible to unplug the whole assembly, which can cause many proplems and can be dangerous.
According to this invention there would be a switch incorporated into the constructin of the plug, enabling a portable appliance to be switched off from the mains supply whilst remaining plugged into a live supply.
The specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the set of accompanying drawings Fig. 1 Shows the switched plug in an unswitched socket Fig. 2 Shows two switched plugs in a multiway adapter Fig. 3 Shows the external elevations of the plug.
Fig. 4 Shows the internal plan of the switch,together with a side and end view with the top cover removed.
Fig. 5 Shows the top cover with the hole for the switch actuater (rocker,toggle or button) DESCRIPTIO Refering to the drawing number 2 the plug comprises a base FIG. 4 and cover FIG. 5 The base assembly includes a base moulding item C, Three male connectors pins items A,D,E, a cable clamp item F, fuse G, and switch H.
The plug as a whole could be constructed to conform to B.S.1363 or normal commercial equivilants and would be made using the various construction methods and materials -as defined in said specification.

Claims (9)

CLAIMS.
1 an actuating rocker switch will be incorporated into the construction of an electric plug enabling a portable appliance to be switched off from the mains, whilst remaining plugged in.
2 a switched plug as claim 1 wherein the actuating switch would be a push button not a rocker switch.
3 A switched plug as claim 1 wherein the actuating switch would be a toggle not a rocker switch.
4 A switched plug as claim 1,2, & 3 wherein the switch is a double pole switch, enabling both live supply and neautral return to be switched off.
5 A switched plug as claim 1,2,, & 4 but incorporating an indicator lamp on the external surface, obtaining its energy source through the live pin Fig.4 item A to indicate when the supply to the plug is energised.
6 A switched plug as claim 5 but obtaining the energy source from the switched terminal Fig.4 item B to indicate when the supply from the plug is energised
7 A switched plug as claim 5 but incorporating a secound indicator lamp, as per claim6 so that both power to and from the plug would be indicated.
8 switched plug as claims 1,2,N,4,5,6, & 7 but incorp orating a cartrige fuse in the live circuit.
9 A switched plug as claims 1, 5,6, & 7 wherein the switch would be replaced with an electrical "TRIP" switch of fixed amperage, thus eliminating the need for a cartrige fuse.
