Description
Title: Lock
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a lock for effecting the locking together of two members which are relatively movable in a plane together and apart.
Locks for so called sliding doors which comprise a first part which is morticed into the thickness of the door and has a hook element or a headed stud which is movable generally in the plane of sliding of the door into and out of cooperation with a keeper carried on a door frame thereby to lock the door in a closed position.
The object of the invention is to provide a new or improved lock which is capable of being surface mounted, to effect the locking together of two members.
According to the invention we provide a lock for effecting the locking together of two members which are relatively movable in a plane together and apart, the lock comprising a first part adapted to be mounted on a surface of one of the members and comprising a bolt extendable in a direction transverse to the plane of relative movement from a retracted position to an extended position, and a second part adapted to be mounted on a surface of the other of the two members, the second part comprising a keeper opening into which the bolt of the first part is received when the first and second members are closed together and the bolt is extended.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is an exploded perspective view of a lock in accordance with the invention.
FIGURE 2 is a front view of the lock of Figure 1 in an assembled condition mounted on members which are locked together.
FIGURE 3 is a view of the underside of the lock of Figures 1 and 2 in an unlocked condition showing first and second parts thereof separated from one another.
Referring to the drawings, a lock 10 is provided for effecting the locking together of two members 11 and 12, one of which 11 is a style or other part of a door, shutter, window or the like and the other member 12 being a style of a frame for the door, shutter, window or the like. Member 11 is movable relative to member 12 by sliding in a plane, between a position in which the members 11 and 12 are closed together (as in figure 2) and a position in which the members 11,12, are moved apart, for example to facilitate access through the door or window.
The lock 10 comprises a first part 13 which has a body with a central body part 14 and a pair of shoulder formations 15,16, either side thereof, the shoulder formations 15,16, each having a through opening 18 to the underside of the first part 13 whereby the first part 13 can be surface mounted by means of fasteners 19 on the member 11.
The first part 13 has a recess 20 which extends from the underside of the body, through the central body part 14 and accommodates a housing 21 for a locking barrel 22 and an extendable bolt 23.
The bolt 23 is extendable from a retracted position shown in figure 3 in which it is accommodated within the housing 21, to an extended position in an axial direction thereof transverse, i.e. in this example generally perpendicular to the direction of relative sliding of the members 11 and 12. This extension is achieved by applying manual pressure to a lock part 24 which, when the bolt 23 is retracted, extends outwardly from the central body part 14 of the body in a direction axially of the bolt 23.
The locking barrel 22 and bolt 23 arrangement is such that when the bolt 23 is extended, the bolt 23 automatically becomes locked in its extended position until released therefrom by an appropriate key (not shown) operating the locking barrel 22.
The housing 21 includes a base plate 25 with apertures 26 by which the housing 21 can be secured in the recess 20 at the underside of the body by fasteners 27. Obviously when the first part 13 of the lock 10 is surface mounted on the member 11, access cannot be obtained to the fasteners 27 which are hidden.
The first body part 13 can be machined, or cast or otherwise fabricated as desired.
The lock 10 further comprises a second part 30 having a body provided with a pair of overhanging abutment formations 31 and 32 which each provide thereunder, a recess to receive a respective shoulder 15,16, of the first part 13, as hereinafter described. The body of the second part 30 is generally of C-shape in front view, and in this example, has a single opening 33 for a fastener 34 by which the second part 30 can be mounted on a surface of the second member 12.
On the underside of the body there is provided a recess 35 in which is received a keeper plate 36, the keeper plate having a pair of apertures 37 by which the plate 36 can be riveted or otherwise fixed to the second member 12 beneath the body of the second part 30. The keeper plate 36 also provides an opening 38 through which the fastener 34 can pass, and a keeper opening 39 into which the extendable bolt 23 of the first part 13 can be received.
The second part 30 may be manufactured by machining, casting, a combination of these or any other fabrication method.
When the members 11,12, are closed together to the position shown in figure 2, with the bolt 23 of the first part of the lock 13 in its retracted position, the central body portion 14 of the first part 13 is received in a space 40 between the overhanging abutment formations 31,32, of the second part 30, whilst the shoulders 15 and 16 of the first parts 30 are received beneath the respective overhanging abutment formations 31,32. Thus the fasteners 19 securing the first part 13 to the member 11, are concealed by the abutment formations 31,32.
The bolt 23 can then be extended as described above, and enters the opening 39 of the keeper plate 36 of the second part 30, thus locking the two members 11,12, together.
The only fastener visible once the members 11 and 12 are locked together, is fastener 34 securing the second part 30 to the member 12, and this fastener 34 can be chosen to be a security fastener which can only be released with a special tool, for example.
However in the event that fastener 34 is removed, and the body of the second part 30b disengaged from the second member 12, the keeper plate 36, would still be in position secured to the second member 12 and hence it would still not be possible to separate the members 11 and 12 without retracting the bolt 23.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
I'he actual configurations of the first and second parts 13,30, are only examples of suitable-configurations the parts of a lock in accordance with the invention.
The first and second parts 13,30, may be made in metal, or a suitably strong plastics material or otherwise as desired.
The extendable bolt 23 may be locked in its extended position automatically when extended, as in the kind of lock shown in the drawings, or may require operation of a key for example to lock the bolt 23 in its extended position.
The bolt and any associated housing 21 could be secured relative to the remainder of the first part 13 of the lock in any desired alternative manner to that shown in the drawings.
If desired, the second part 30 may be manufactured with an integral keeper plate 36, or otherwise as desired provided that the second part 30 has an opening to receive the bolt of the first part 30 when the bolt is in its extended position.
Any alternative means to those described for securing the first and second parts 13,30 to their respective members 11,12, could be provided.
It can be seen that a peripheral wall 21a of a recess 21b on the underside of the first part 13, which accommodates base plate 25 of housing 21, has a recess R so that when the first and second members 13,30 are closed together towards the figure 2 position, the keeper plate 36 of the second part 30 can enter the recess 21b on the underside of the first part 13 such that the keeper opening 39 can be located in alignment with the bolt 23.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
