Abstract
In apparatus for administration of a drug by inhalation the improvement comprises incorporation of an expansion chamber 4 between a drug supply device 10 and a mouthpiece 11 to slow down the rate of administration of the drug to the patient, said expansion chamber 4 comprising a section of corrugated tubing 13 that can be collapsed in an axial direction of the tubing from an extended drug inhalation position to a collapsed storage position. The drug supply device may be, for example, a hand held inhaler or a dose metering device incorporated in a breathing circuit or a ventilator circuit. <IMAGE>
Description
ApParatus for Administration of Druas
This invention relates to apparatus for the administration of drugs by inhalation, especially from a metered dose inhaler.
Drugs for the treatment of asthma and other disorders of the respiratory tract are frequently administered in metered doses by inhalation. Hand held inhalers are in common use and dose metering devices are also incorporated in breathing circuit tubing and ventilator circuits.
One major disadvantage of such current apparatus for administration of drugs by inhalation is that the dosing means administers a fast "pulse" of the drug to the patient so that the patient has to adjust his breathing to the rate of injection of the drug in order for the dose to be administered correctly. For patients with breathing disorders it may be extremely difficult for them to adjust their breathing to ensure that they get the maximum benefit from a dose of the drug.
It has been proposed to alleviate this difficulty by attaching to the outlet of a hand held inhaler an expanded mouth piece device in order to slow down the "pulse of the drug and similar arrangements involving introduction of large bore tubing have been introduced into breathing apparatus, nebulizers and the like.
Such an arrangement, particularly on a hand held inhaler is extremely disadvantageous because in order to be effective the attachment has to be either relatively long or relatively wide which makes the inhaler cumbersome and less portable.
This invention comprises an inhalation apparatus for the administration of a metered dose of a drug wherein the drug container or supply has an outlet that feeds into a section of collapsible corrugated tubing of uncollapsed diameter greater than the diameter of the outlet.
The collapsible corrugated tubing may, for example, comprise corrugated polypropylene tubing of the type that is used in certain children's drinking straws although, of course, it will be of considerably larger diameter.
For storage of the inhaler the corrugated tube may be collapsed into a relatively short length but for use of the inhaler the tubing can be pulled out to form a relatively large expansion chamber which slows down the pulse of drug and enables a patient to absorb a dose of the drug without having to materially alter his breathing pattern.
The end of the corrugated tubing remote from the inhaler may be of the same order of diameter as for a conventional hand held inhaler or of standard diameter to cooperate with other conventional surgical tubing or connectors.
The invention will now be described in greater detail by way of example with reference to the drawings which show diagrammatically various ways in which the invention may be put into effect.
Figs 1A and 1B show the invention in conjunction with a hand held inhaler 1. At the outlet 2 from the inhaler 1 is connected a section of collapsable corrugated polypropene tubing 3. In the expanded state shown in Fig 1A the collapsable tubing 3 provides an expansion chamber 4 of considerable volume whereas when collapsed, as shown in Fig IB the tube 3 forms a relatively compact attachment to the inhaler 1.
Figs 2A and 2B shows use of the invention in standard breathing circuit tubing with a metered dose inhaler 5 incorporated.
The collapsable tubing section 6 is shown in expanded form in Fig 2A and collapsed in Fig 2B.
Fig 3 shows the use of the invention in a nebulizer arrangement. The conventional nebulizer comprises a nebulizer head 10 connected to a mouth piece 11 including an air intake 12 including a one way valve. According to the invention a section of collapsable corrugated polypropylene tubing 13 is interposed between the nebulizer head 10 and the mouth piece 11.
Fig 4 shows the invention used in connection with a drug nebulizer in a volume ventilator circuit. In this case the nebulizer 15 feeds into an airline 16 with a one way valve (not shown) and with a section of collapsable corrugated polypropylene tubing 17 interposed between the nebulizer and the mouth piece 18 connected to the patient.
Claims (5)
1. An inhalation apparatus for the administration of a metered dose of a drug comprising a drug supply device having an outlet and a mouthpiece through which a patient can inhale the drug and wherein between said outlet and said mouthpieces into a section of corrugated tubing that is collapsible in the axial direction of the tubing and which has an uncollapsed diameter that is greater than the diameter of the outlet, whereby to provide, in its uncollapsed state, an expansion chamber so that the rate of supply of the drug to the patient is reduced.
2. Inhalation apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein the drug supply device comprises a hand held inhaler device.
3. Inhalation apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein the drug supply device comprises a metering device incorporated in breathing circuit tubing or a ventilator circuit.
4. Inhalation apparatus according to any one of
Claims 1 to 3, wherein the corrugated tubing is corrugated polypropylene tubing.
5. Inhalation apparatus according to Claim 1, substantially as described herein with reference to any of Figures 1 to 4 of the drawings.
