Abstract

The stabiliser comprises a body 1 filled with a viscous material 3 in which is mounted a vane 2 on a spindle 4. Either the body or spindle is attached to a towing vehicle, and the other to a towed vehicle. Upon angular displacements of the towed vehicle relative to the towing vehicle the spindle is caused to rotate, so moving the vane 2 through the viscous material which provides a resistance to such movement. The level of resistance can be varied by changing the vane to body clearance, or by providing an opening in the vane. The stabiliser may be integral with the towing hitch or the towing coupling, or may be provided as an independent stabiliser. <IMAGE>

Description

Hydraulic stabilser for a towed vehicle This invention relates to an hydraulic stabilser for use in towing vehicles.
Towed vehicles having no motive power themselves are pulled behind prime movers using a coupling which has to allow the towed vehicle to move freely in 6 axis.Due to the ease with which the towed vehicle can move in 2 of the axis namely from side to side instability in the towed vehicle can be experienced leading to progressivly larger angular displacements about the coupling, culminating in overturning of the towed vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided an hydraulic towed vehicle stabiliser comprising of a body inside which,is a vane immersed in a viscous material attached to a spindle so that when connected between the towing and towed vehicles any angular movement between the two vehicles causes the vane to move relative to the body therefore displacing the viscous material from one side of the vane to the other through a controlled opening,in the vane or between the vane, body and spindle.
The use of a visors material flowing through a controlled opening has the desirable effect of increasing the restraining force on the towed vehicle as side to side instability increases. The majority of existing stabilisers for towed vehicles use friction plates to provide the restraining effect, these have the undersirable effect of providing their greatest restraining force when there is no angular movement between the two vehicles and decreases as the angular movement increases when the towed vehicle becomes unstable.
A specfic embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of eamples with reference to the accomanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a plan section through the body of the stabiliser Figure 2 shows a side elevation section through the body of the stabilser.
Figure z shows a plan view of the stabiliser mechanism as an accessory attached to towing and towed vehicle.
Figure 4 shows the stabiliser mechanism incorporated into the towing attachment device of the towing vehicle.
Figure 5 shows a side elevation section of the stabilser mechanism incorporated into the towing attachment device of the towed vehicle.
Referring to the drawings figures 1 and 2 the stabliser device consists of a body 1 inside which is a vane 2 which is moved through the viscous material 3 by a spindle 4.The movement of the spindle 4 occurrs whenever there is angular displacement between the towing and towed vehicle.Movement of the vane 2 through the viscous material 3 will cause a pressure build up in front of the vane 2 causing an opposing force to the towed vehicle which is dependent upon the angular velocity between the towing and towed vehicles.
Figure 3 shows the aforementioned mechanism incororated into an accessory stabliser whereby it is attached to the towing vehicle 5 and a linkage 6 connects it to the towed vehicle 7.Angular displacement between the two vehicles causes the linkage to turn the body 1 relative to the spindle 4.Movement of the vane 2 through the viscous material 3 will cause a pressure build up in front of the vane 2 causing an opposing force to the towed vehicle which is dependent upon the angular velocity between the towing and towed vehicles Figure 4 shows the aftormentioned mechanism incorporated into the coupling device of the towing vehicle 8.Angular displacment of the towed vehicle relative to the towing vehicle would cause the spindle 4 to be turned by,for example a key, flat or similar means (not shown)between the towed vehicle coupling 9 and the spindle 4. Movement of the vane 2 through the viscous material 3 will cause a pressure build up in front of the vane 2 causing an opposing force to the towed vehicle which is dependent upon the angular velocity between the towing and towed vehicles.
Figure 5 shows the afformentioned mechanism incorporated into the coupling device of the towed vehicle 9angular displacment of the towed vehicle relative to the towing vehicle would cause the spindle 4 to be turned bySthe towing vehicle coupling 8 using for example a key II,+lat or similar means. Movement of the vane 2 through the viscous material 3 will cause a pressure build up in front of the vane 2 causing an opposing force to the towed vehicle which is dependent upon the angular velocity between the towing and towed vehicles.

Claims (7)

1 An hydraulic stabiliser device for use with a towed vehicle comprising a body inside which is a vane immersed in a viscous material and attached tc a spindle so that when connected between the towing and towed vehicles any angular movement between the two vehicles causes the vane to move relative to the body therefore displacing the viscous material from one side of the vane to the other through a controlled opening in the vane or between the vane, body and spindle.
2 An hydraulic stabiliser device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the restraining force increases proportionally to an increase in angular velocity between the towed and towing vehicles, caused by the restricted flow of the viscous material through the controlled opening.
An hydraulic stabilser device as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 whereby the restraining force can be controlled by changes in the vane area.
4 An hydraulic stabliser device as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 whereby the restraing force can be controlled by changes in the viscosity of the viscous material
5 Nn hydraulic stabiliser device as claimed in claim 1 and 2 whereby the device is integral to the towed vehicle coupling.
6 An hydraulic stabiliser device as claimed in claim I and claim 2 whereby the device is integral to the towing vehicle coupling.
7 An hydraulic stabiliser device as claimed in claim 1 and clim 2 whereby the device is independant of the towed and towing vehicle coupling but is situated adjacent to the coupling and attached to both the towing and towed vehicle.
E An hydraulic vehicle stabiliser device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
