Abstract

A restraining handrest includes a rectangular pad made of an inflexible material covered with a layer of soft material, and fastening belts attached to the pad for fastening the hand to, the pad in taking a drip infusion, wherein the pad may have a smoothly convex portion on the top fitting the palm which causes the back of the hand to curve upwards for receiving a drip infusion. <IMAGE>

Description

RESTRAINING HANDREST FOR DRIP INFUSION BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a restraining handrest for resting the hand which has a convex portion fitting the palm so that the back of the hand surely curves upwards for taking a drip infusion as the palm rested on the convex portion.
In many cases, a drip infusion is required to introduce a solution, as of glucose or salt, into the body of a patient through a vein. A drip infusion is commonly introduced into a vein on the back of the hand. However, it is not easy to fine a vein on the back of the hand of a people having much fat or an aged people having wrinkles in skin. A nurse may try several times to find a vein for introducing a drip infusion, causing the patient to suffer pains.
Because a drip infusion takes a several hours to finish, the needle of the drip infusion set must be firmly retained to the hand as the hand is receiving the process of infusion. For securing the needle of a drip infusion set to the patient's hand, adhesive tapes are commonly used. However, adhesive tapes may lose their binding force easily as the patient gives out sweat. There is a drip infusion alarm which gives an audio alarm as the needle of the drip infusion set disconnects from the vein. However, this drip infusion alarm simply gives an alarm after the needle of the drip infusion set has been disconnected from place but can not keepthe needle of the drip infusion set in place.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention has been accomplished under the aforesaid circumstances. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a restraining handrest for a drip infusion which helps the nurse to find a vein on the back of the patient's hand easily for employing a drip infusion. It is another object of the present invention to provide a restraining handrest for a drip infusion which firmly secures the patient's hand in place for taking a drip infusion. It is still another object of the present invention to provide a restraining handrest for a drip infusion which is inexpensive to manufacture and easy to use. It is still another object of the present invention to provide a restraining handrest for a drip infusion which is orthopedic ally engineered for comfortably resting the hand in taking a drip infusion. To achieve these objects, there is provided a restraining handrest which is generally comprised of a rectangular pad made of an inflexible material covered with a layer of soft material for resting the hand comfortably. Fastening belts are attached to the back side of the pad on two opposite ends for fastening the hand to the pad. A convex portion is formed on the pad which fits the palm and causes the back of the hand to surely curve upwards for taking a drip infusion as the palm is supported thereon. An adjusting belt may be used to secure the pad to the bed.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Fig. 1 illustrates the outer appearance of the preferred embodiment of the restraining handrest of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side view showing that the hand is fastened to the restraining handrest to receive a drip infusion; and Fig. 3 illustrates that the restraining handrest is fastened to the bed to hold the hand in place in receiving a drip infusion.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to Fig. 1, a restraining handrest as constructed in accordance with the present invention is generally comprised of a pad 1 and a plurality of fastening belts 2. The pad 1 is made of an inflexible material in a rectangular shape covered with a layer of soft material for comfortably resting the hand, having a smoothly convex portion 11 on the top edge thereof orthopedically engineered to fit the palm.
The fastening belts 2 are respectively fastened to the pad 1 on the bottom in transverse direction, having each two opposite free ends attached with a hook tape 21 and loop tape 22 on opposite sides. By attaching the hook tape 21 on one end of either fastening belt 2 to the loop tape 22 on the opposite end of the same fastening belt 2, the handrest is fastened to the hand rested on the pad 1.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the palm A of the hand is placed on the convex portion 11 of the pad 1, and therefore the back B of the hand surely curves upwards above the pad 1. The hand is then fastened to the pad 1 by the fastening belts 2. In the present preferred embodiment, there are two fastening belts 2 fastened to the pad 1. When in use, one fastening belt 2 is fastened over the fingers, and the other fastening belt 2 is fastened over the rear end of the back B adjacent to the carpal joint C. Thus, the needle D of the tubing E of the drip infusion set to be employed can be easily pierced into a vein on the back B of the hand.
Referring to Fig. 3, an adjusting belt F may be used to fasten the pad 1 to the bed G so that the handrest will not be carried by the hand from place to place.
The embodiment described is simple in structure and therefore functional. However, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention and the invention is not to be considered limited to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification. For example, elastic bands may be used in place of the fastening belts 2 for fastening the hand to the pad 1. Furthermore, the convex portion 11 may be eliminated from the pad 1, so that the handrest can be fastened to the forearm where a drip infusion is employed.
