Abstract

227,314. Rice, J. V. March 17, 1924. Pumps. - In an internal-combustion engine for rock-drills, of the kind in which an extension 4 of the piston compresses air into a reservoir for starting or charging, a non- return valve 16 for the admission of air to the pump space 14 is under the control of a diaphragm 13 exposed to the pressure in the air reservoir, so that the valve 16 is held open and air ceases to be compressed when the reservoir pressure exceeds a predetermined amount. As shown, a pair of similar pistons are connected by a piston-rod 3, one piston carrying the drill and chuck (not shown). The extension 4 compresses air by way of an non-return valve 26 and a pipe 25 to the reservoir, the pipe 25 being connected to the space 50 on one side of the diaphragm 13, which carries a rod 20 abutting against the stem of the valve 16.
