Abstract
A fuel filter, especially for diesel fuel, comprises a housing containing a replaceable annular filter element 7 having its axis vertical and arranged to filter fuel by radial inward flow therethrough, the element sealingly engaging a removable lid 3 at the top and a mounting member 13 at the bottom. Downstream of element 7 the fuel is constrained to flow downwards through a water-collecting sump 15, before reaching outlet 35. The element 7 is of pleated paper. A heater 24 is provided between inlet 34 and element 7. In Fig. 2 the inlet and 2 outlet are both near the bottom of the housing, and the outlet is extended by a tubular section into a modified baffle 27, 28. <IMAGE>
Description
1 A FUEL FILTER 2272652 The invention relates to a fuel filter, especially
for diesel fuel oil, in which a filter housing is arranged to receive an annular filter element extending substantially vertically and the fuel is guided for radial flow through the filter element. A chamber is provided in the lower part of the housing for collecting separated water.
A fuel filter of this type is known, for example, from DE-PS 38 29 190. The closed fuel filter cartridge is connected.by way of a screw thread to a filter mounting head and contains a filter element, which is surrounded radially on the inside by a water separating element, the separated water being collected in a collecting chamber in the lower region of the filter cartridge. The filter cartridge is additionally equipped with a waterlevel indicator.
The filter cartridge described in the above German patent has the drawback that it is constructed as a disposable cartridge and thus, when it is replaced, parts which can possibly be reused are destroyed unnecessarily.
It is, therefore, the object of the present invention to find a fuel filter with a simple construction, in which the filter element can be separated and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, in which case the 2 remaining individual parts, which are important for the operation, can be reused.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a fuel filter, especially for diesel fuel, comprising a filter housing receiving an annular filter element with its axis aligned approximately vertically and through which there is a radial flow, which in its lower region comprises a collecting chamber for separated water, characterised in that the filter housing is constructed to be cup-shaped with a cover which can be removed at the top and a support member mounted at the bottom in the inside and receiving the filter element in an exchangeable manner, the fuel entering the filter housing in the region of the support part.
Preferably, the filter element bears in a radially sealed manner against the support member and against the cover.
The exchangeable filter element preferably consists of a uniform material, e.g. a porous paper web, and is folded in zig-zag manner and is provided at its opposite ends with a meltable sealing material.
Two embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 shows a fuel filter according to the invention in section, Figure 2 shows a second construction of a fuel filter Y 3 according to the invention in section.
A fuel filter 1, especially for diesel fuel, consistb of a cup-shaped filter housing 2, which is closed by a removable cover 3. According to Figure 1, the cover 3 is securely connected to the filter housing 2 by way of a bayonet lock 5. The seal between the cover 3 and filter housing 2 is achieved by way of a gasket 6. A filter element 7 inside the filter housing 2 separates the inlet chamber 8 for receiving fuel to be filtered from the clean chamber 9. The filter element 7 comprising a filter web material, e.g. paper, folded in a zig-zag manner, is constructed at its opposite ends with a sealing material 10, 11 of material which is able to fuse, e.g. like a fleece, and which can be melted by ultrasound or induction welding onto the filter web material 7. The sealing material 10 thus bears tightly against a connection 12 of the cover 3,4 and the sealing material 11 bears tightly against a support part 13 receiving the filter element 7, so that the inlet chamber 8 and clean chamber 9 are separated from each other.
At its closed lower end 14, the cup-shaped filter housing 2 forms a collecting chamber 15 for the water separated from the fuel, which can be removed from the filter by means of a water drainage device 16. Provided close to the collecting chamber 15 and above the latter in the filter housing 2 is a recess 17, in which the support 4 part 13 is seated by its lower end 18 by means of a gasket 19. The support part 13 of synthetic material is constructed in its lower region 20 above its lower end 18 as a sleeve 21, which passes into an open rim with ribs 22 and support rings 23 for the filter element 7. Furthermore, the support part 13 serves to receive a PTC heating arrangement 24, known per se, having an electrical current supply means 25. In this context, 'PTC' means positive temperature coefficient and refers to an electrical resistance heater which is self-regulating. The heater element comprises a disc or annulus of ceramic material which is adapted to display a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity. Passageways are provided to permit the fuel to pass into the chamber 9.
Provided radially inside the filter element 7 in the clean chamber 9 is a tubular water separation element 26, which, according to Figure 1, is composed of a sleeve part 27 (T-shaped in section), widening out at the bottom and connected above to a tubular section 28. The tubular section 28 bears against the connection 12 of the cover 3. Furthermore, a secure connection to the support part 13 is provided between the T-shaped sleeve part 27 or the tubular section 28 by way of ribs 29. The T-shaped sleeve part 27 is provided with webs 30 extending in the form of a spiral, for the better drainage of water separated on the tubular section 28.
Z An air-vent valve 31 is attached to the cover 3 of the fuel filter 1. 1 A strap 32 is provided for attaching the fuel filter 1 in the engine compart-ment.
The supply of the fuel takes place in the direction of arrow 33 through a pipe 34, which opens into the filter housing 2 in the lower region 20 of the support part 13 so that the fuel is guided through the PTC heating device 24. In the embodiment according to Figure 1, after the heated fuel flows through the filter element 7 and after the separation of any water possibly contained in the fuel, by condensation on the water separation element 26, the -fuel is discharged within the T-shaped sleeve part 27 and the tubular section 28 upwards by way of a pipe 35 integrally formed in the cover 3, in the direction of arrow 36. In order to place only a slight load on the fuel line connected to the line 35, at the time of opening of the cover 3, the cover 3 is securely connected to the filter housing 2 by way of a short rotation connector (bayonet lock 5).
The embodiment according to Figure 2, for which the same reference numerals as in Figure 1 have been used for the same parts, differs from the embodiment according to Figure I in the following features:
The connection of the cover 4 to the filter housing 2 takes place by a screw connection 37, whereby for better 6 rotation of the cover 4, the latter is provided with a hexagon head 39 able to be closed by a cover part 38. 1 The water separation element 40 is constructed in one piece and at its lower open end 41 widens out in a T shape and at its other end 42 is closed in the shape of a dome. The water separation member 40 is securely connected at one side by way of ribs 43 to the support part 13 and is supported on the upper support ring 23 by way of tongues 44.
The supply of fuel takes place in the same way as in the embodiment according to Figure 1. After flowing through the filter element 7 and after the separation of water externally on the water separation member 40, the fuel 40 within the water separation member 40 is discharged between the latter and a vertical pipe 45 first of all upwards and then over the vertical pipe 45 and a line 46 located at the closed end 14 of the filter housing 2, in the direction of arrow 47.
With the illustrated embodiments of such a fuel filter, due to the use of materials for the filter element and the design of the filter housing with a cover, at the time of changing the filter, a separate environmentally friendly disposal is guaranteed.
