Abstract

227,258. Candy, F. P. Dec. 1, 1923. Filters with loose filtering-materials. - The rate of discharge of water from a filter bed is kept constant by means of a valve governed by a float riding on the filtered water before it passes the valve. A vertical conduit 11 is connected to the outlet pipe 4 between the filter 1 and the valve 5. A float 13 is connected to a counterweight 21 by means of a chain 14 passing round a pulley 15. The spindle of the pulley is geared to the spindle of a cam 10 which engages a lever 9 connected to the valve 5. The lever 9 may also be operated to close the valve 5 by means of a float 19 in the unfiltered water above the bed. Or arrangements as described in Specification 196,153 may be made for closing the valve quickly when the water above the bed has reached a predetermined level.
