Abstract

A ball retriever and thrower comprises a container 1 which opens when pressed against a ball and automatically closes again to hold the ball inside the container 1. The ball receiver and thrower also has a long handle 5 which enables the user to reach a ball which is beyond arms length. By swinging the container 1 the ball can be ejected from the container 1 without having to touch or hold the ball. An elastic band 4 can be slipped over the container opening in order to allow the retriever to be used with heavier or smaller balls. <IMAGE>

Description

BALL KElXIENER AND THROWER This invention relates to a ball retriever and thrower.
Physically handicapped people are frequently limited in there ability to take part in ball games. The ball retriever enables physically handicapped people to reach and pick up balls from the ground which would normally be beyond reach. Additionally it enables people with a small or restricted grasp to pick up, hold and throw balls. A typical situation would be a person in a wheelchair.
The invention is comprised of a 'head' which is a cylindrical plastic container and a handle. By pressing the head onto a ball the container opens just enough to allow entry of the ball into the container and then contracts to retain the ball within. The depth of the cylinder allows for one or more balls to be contained. By swinging or flicking the device the ball contained within, moves towards the opening and together with centrifugal force, forces the opening to enlarge and so release the ball.
An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the ball retriever.
Figure 2 shows a view looking from below.
Referring to the drawings the ball retriever and thrower comprises a 'head' 1 which is a plastic container of near cylindrical in shape and a handle 5 as shown in Fig. 1 The handle is a plastic tube of dimensions to suit the persons restricted mobility. The head has a depth that allows one or more balls 2 to be contained within. The lip 3 at the opening of the head allows the force of pressure on the ball to enlarge the diameter of the entrance and so provide space for the ball to enter. The head then resumes its original shape and so retains the ball.
tc In order to allow heavier balls and smaller balls. use the same head, an elasticated band 4 can be slipped over the lipped entrance as shown in Fig. 1 and 2

Claims (2)

  1. CLAIMS I. A ball retriever and thrower comprising of a head' which is a tulip shaped plastic container, and a handle. By pressing the head onto a ball the container opens just enough to allow entry of the ball into the container and then contracts to retain the ball within. The depth of the cylinderallows for one or more balls to be contained. By swinging or flicking the devlce the ball contained within the cylinder moves towards the opening and together with centrifugal force, forces the opening to enlarge and so release the ball.
  2. 2. A ball retriever and thrower as claimed in Claim 1 where the depth of the cylinder allows for at least one ball to be contained.
3 A ball retriever and thrower as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the opening of the cylinder may be adjusted by use of an elastic band to allow other balls which are heavier or smaller to be retained using the same sized 'head'.
tA A ball retriever and thrower substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
