Abstract
An attachment used in multiples of two or more units in conjunction with a lath, to provide an accurate height and level datum when applying the first row of tiles to a wall. Carriers 1 have provision for being releasably secured to the lath, and have Adjustable Legs 2 which provide height and level adjustment for the lath. The assembly is positioned with lath in contact with wall, and adjustable legs in contact with an abutting surface to the wall, for example floor, worktop, bath surround. With the aid of a spirit level, the legs are adjusted to achieve accurate height and level adjustment of the lath. No fixing of lath to wall is necessary. <IMAGE>
Description
TILING AID
The invention relates to a tiling aid which simplifies a difficult operation in a wall tiling project.
Before commencing tiling, DIY Centres and books recommend that with the aid of a spirit level, a lath is nailed to the wall to provide a height and level datum for positioning and fixing the first row of tiles.
Controlling accuracy whilst driving nails into masonry is difficult, and any error in the resulting position of the lath on the wall cannot easily be corrected.
Subsequent fixing of tiles to adjacent walls requires even greater accuracy since any mis-alignment of rows abutting on adjacent walls is aesthetically undesirable.
The Tiling Aid is an attachment which provides fine adjustment for height and level positioning of the lath with no necessity for fixing lath to wall.
According to the present invention, an attachment which is used in multiples of two or more has means of being releasably secured to a lath, and means of supporting the lath against the wall to be tiled. The attachment incorporates an adjustable leg which provides fine adjustment for level of lath, and height of lath, relative to an abutting surface to the wall, for example floor, worktop, or bath surround.
The contact position of adjustable leg with the abutting surface to wall, and the position of the centre of mass of the assembly is such that a turning moment exists, ensuring contact between lath and wall with no necessity for fixing lath to wall.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which
Figure 1. shows the assembly of the attachment, in third angle projection and approximately full size.
Figure 2. illustrates in perspective, the attachment and its position when secured to the lath. The lath is shown in chain dot.
Figure 3. shows the attachment in use from floor level, on wall with or without skirting board.
Referring to the drawing, the attachment comprises a
Carrier 1. with means of being releasably secured to a lath, with for example, screws. Clearance holes 3. are provided for this purpose. A Ledge 4. is provided on Carrier 1. to ensure a positive support for the lath.
The Carrier 1. could be made, for example, from a moulding or an extrusion as illustrated in the drawing.
An Adjustable Leg 2. which is housed in, and operates from the Carrier 1. has means of being raised and lowered, for example, a screw threaded stud working through an internal screw thread in Carrier 1. A means of operating the
Adjustable Leg 2. is provided, for example a screwdriver slot 5.
Carrier 1. with Adjustable Leg 2. are used in multiples of two or more in conjunction with a lath of length to suit the constraints of the working area, as shown in Fig 3.
By selecting suitable cross sectional dimensions for the lath, the assembly can be made to clear skirting boards.
One Carrier 1. with Adjustable Leg 2. is secured to face of lath near to each end of lath, with Ledges 4. in contact with lower edge of lath. Adjustable Legs 2. are set to approximate height requirement of the first row of tiles above an abutting surface, for example, floor, worktop, bath surround, or similar surface.
The assembly is positioned by placing lath in contact with wall, and lowering the assembly until Adjustable Legs 2.
contact the abutting surface to the wall.
Additional Carriers 1. with Adjustable Legs 2. may be used as props to prevent sag in long lengths of lath.
With the aid of a spirit level, the Adjustable Legs 2. are actuated to achieve precise adjustment for height and level of the lath.
Direction 7. through which the centre of mass of the assembly acts, and its distance 8. from the support point 6. ensures that the resulting turning moment will maintain contact between lath and wall, with no necessity for fixing lath to wall.
Application of the tiles to the wall increases this turning moment and effectively locks the assembly in position.
Claims (2)
1. Tiling Aid is an attachment used in multiples of two or more, having means of releasably securing it to a lath, and means of supporting the lath against the wall to be tiled.
The attachment incorporates an adjustable leg which provides fine adjustment for level of lath, and height of lath, relative to an abutting surface. The contact position of adjustable leg with the abutting surface to wall, and the position of the centre of mass of the assembly,is such that a turning moment exists, ensuring contact between lath and wall with no necessity for fixing lath to wall.
2. A Tiling Aid substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawing.
