Abstract

A pallet 10 is made of corrugated board and has longitudinal and transverse ribs 12.2, 14.2 which have interlocking slot and bridge formations 20, 22 to interlock the ribs together. The inner ribs 12.2, 14.2 are located on the outer ribs 12.1, 14.1 by step and slot formations 24, 26; 30, 32; and the outer ribs 12.1, 14.1 locate on each other by step formations 36, 38. <IMAGE>

Description

PALLET This invention relates to a pallet.
According to the invention a pallet includes two sets of ribs made of corrugated board and extending transversely to one another with each rib having interlocking formations which interlock the ribs together.
Each rib may have two spaced tine slots which corresponding tine slots of each set of ribs are aligned with one another to form tine receiving zones within the pallet.
The ribs of each set of ribs may be spaced from one another.
Each set of ribs may consist of inner and outer ribs. The inner ribs may interlock with one another by interlocking slot and bridge formations, with a bridge formation of a rib of one of the sets of ribs being interlocked with a slot formation of a transversely extending rib of the other set of ribs. The interlocking slot and bridge formations may be located between the tine slots in each inner rib.
Each inner rib may include a step formation at either of its transverse ends with the step formations of each inner rib being interlocked with corresponding step or slot formations in the outer ribs.
The outer ribs may include a cover member on their outer surface, the cover member providing a cover for the exposed transverse ends of the interlocking ribs.
Each rib may comprise a plurality of layers of corrugated board. One of the layers of each rib may include a flap which may be folded over the other layers in the tine slot zones of each rib.
The pallet may include a platform to which the ribs are secured. The pallet may also include a base with the ribs being sandwiched between the base and the platform.
According to another aspect of the invention a rib for a pallet as described above is provided the rib being made of corrugated board and have interlocking formations for interlocking with interlocking formations on other ribs.
The invention will now be described by way of a non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: figure 1 is a perspective view of a pallet according to the invention; figure 2 is a perspective view of the pallet from above with the platform removed; figure 3 is a perspective view of the pallet from below with the base removed; figure 4 is a cross-sectional view on line IV -IV of figure 3; figure 5 is a cross-sectional view on line V - V of figure 3; figure 6 is a perspective view of an outer longitudinal rib; figure 7 is a perspective view of an inner longitudinal rib; figure 8 is a perspective view of an outer transverse rib; and figure 9 is a perspective view of an inner transverse rib.
Referring to the drawings, a pallet 10 includes two outer longitudinal ribs 12.1, three inner longitudinal ribs 12.2, three inner longitudinal ribs 12,2, two outer transverse ribs 14.1 and three inner transverse ribs 14.2. Each of the longitudinal ribs has two spaced tine slots 16 and each of the transverse ribs has two spaced tine slots 18. The tine slots 16 are aligned with one another to form two tine receiving zones 16.1. Similarly the tine slots 18 are aligned with one another to form two tine receiving zones 18.1.
The inner longitudinal ribs 12.2 and inner transverse ribs 14.2 each have slots 20 and bridges 22. The bridges 22 of the inner longitudinal ribs 12.2 bridge the slots 20 of the inner transverse ribs 14.2. Similarly the bridges 22 of the inner transverse ribs 14.2 bridge the slots 20 of the inner longitudinal ribs 12.2.
The inner longitudinal ribs 12.1 have steps 24 which locate within slots 26 in the outer transverse ribs 14.1. All the ribs consist of four layers of corrugated cardboard laminated to one another. One of the four layers provides a cover 28 for each slot 26 of the inner transverse ribs 14.2.
Similarly, the inner transverse ribs 14.1 have steps 30 which locate within slots 32 in the outer longitudinal ribs 12.1. A cover 34 is provided for each slot 32 by one of the corrugated cardboard layers of the outer longitudinal ribs 12.1.
Each outer longitudinal rib 12.1 has steps 36 and each outer transverse rib 14.1 has steps 38. The steps 36 and 38 abut one another. Covers 40 and 42 of the outer longitudinal ribs 12.1 and the outer transverse ribs 14.1 respectively cover the exposed ends of the steps 36 and 38.
Only three of the four layers of the corrugated cardboard are removed to form the tine slots 16 in the longitudinal ribs. The fourth layer forms a flap 40 covering the other three layers. The flaps 40 are glued in position.
Similarly the transverse ribs have flaps 42 glued in position.
The pallet 10 has a platform 44 and a base 46 both of which are made of corrugated cardboard and are glued to the ribs.
It will be appreciated that many modifications or variations of the invention are possible without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.

Claims (15)

CLAIMS:
1. A pallet including two sets of ribs made of corrugated board and extending transversely to one another with each rib having interlocking formations which interlock the ribs together.
2. The pallet of claim 1 wherein each rib has two spaced tine slots which corresponding tine slots of each set of ribs are aligned with one another to form tine receiving zones within the pallet.
3. The pallet of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the ribs of each set of ribs are spaced from one another.
4. The pallet of any of the above claims wherein each set of ribs consists of inner ribs and outer ribs.
5. The pallet of claim 4 wherein the inner ribs interlock with one another by interlocking slot and bridge formations, with a bridge formation of å rib of one of the sets of ribs being interlocked within a slot formation of a transversely extending rib of the other set of ribs.
6. The pallet of claim 5 wherein the interlocking slot and bridge formations are located between the tine slots in each inner rib.
7. The pallet of claim 5 or claim 6 wherein each inner rib includes a step formation at either of its transverse ends with the step formations of each inner rib being interlocked with corresponding step or slot formations in the outer ribs.
8. The pallet of claim 7 wherein each outer rib includes a cover member on its outer surface, with the cover member providing a cover for the exposed transverse ends of the interlocking ribs.
9. The pallet of any of the above claims wherein each rib comprises a plurality of layers of corrugated board.
10. The pallet of claim 9 wherein one of the layers of each rib includes a flap which is folded over the other layers in the tine slot zones of each rib.
11. The pallet of any of the above claims including a platform to which the ribs are secured.
12. The pallet of claim 11 including a base with the ribs being sandwiched between the base and the platform.
13. A pallet substantially as herein described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
14. A rib for a pallet as claimed in any of the above claims, the rib being made of corrugated board and having interlocking formations for interlocking with interlocking formations on other ribs.
15. A rib for a pallet, the rib being substantially as herein described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
