Abstract
The container (e.g. for a bag of compost and fertilizer, a Grow Bag,) comprises a base 10, an upstanding wall or walls 12, 14 and depending legs 16 attached to the wall or walls. Support members 20 are attached to the legs 16 and extend underneath and support the base, enabling the base to simply rest on the support members 20. The legs 16 brace the structure. Upstanding members 24 may be attached to end walls 14 by bracket 16, each member 24 having holes 28 in which dowels or canes 30 are inserted so that plants can be tied. Members 24 may alternatively be screwed to end walls 14. Brackets/chains can be fixed to side walls 12 or end walls 14 to enable container to be supported from a wall. <IMAGE>
Description
A CONTAINER
This invention relates to a container, such as a container for a bag of compost and fertiliser, often known as a Grow Bag. The bag is made of plastics and, in use, one or more openings are made in the top and plants, often vegetables, are planted in the compost/fertiliser. These bags are quite heavy and difficult to manipulate, even more so when in use.
Also, they are not particularly attractive, especially as they are commonly just laid on the ground.
The object of the invention is to provide a container for such a bag.
The invention provides a container comprising a base, an upstanding wall or walls and depending legs attached to the wall or walls, wherein support members are attached to the legs and extend underneath and support the base.
Provision of the legs means that the base is away from the ground enabling the container to be easily lifted and moved. Appropriate choice of material, such as stained or painted wood, will make the container more attractive than a plastics bag.
Preferably, the base just rests on the support members. If the base should be damaged, corrode or rot and be unfit for its purpose, this feature means that it can simply be lifted out and replaced without having to unscrew screws or pull out nails for example.
Preferably, elongate apertured members are attached upstanding to the wall or walls. Dowels or canes can be fitted in these apertures to extend from one upstanding member to the other to enable plants growing in the bag to be tied to the dowel or cane and so supported.
Means may be provided to allow the container to be supported from a garden wall or the wall of a house and may comprise brackets or one or more chains attached to the wall or walls of the container.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a container,
Figure 1 being a side viewt Figure 2 being an end view, and
Figure 3 being a plan view.
The illustrated container is made of wood and comprises a base 10, upstanding side walls 12 and end walls 14 and four depending legs 16 attached to the side walls 12. Each side wall 12 and end wall 14 is composed of two strips of timber screwed to corner posts 18. Each leg 16 is attached by screws to the two strips of the side wall 12 and. extends at an angle to below the base 10. Supporting cross-members 20 are attached by screws to the pair of legs 16 at each end and extend underneath and support the base 10. The base 10 comprises three wooden slats 22 shown in chain -dot which just rest on the cross-members 20.
Elongate upstanding members 24 are attached one dt each end of the container to the inside of the end walls 14 by an aluminium bracket 26 which is nailed to the two timber strips of the end wall. Each member 24 has a plurality of holes 28 in which dowels or canes 30 are inserted so that plants can be tied to them.
The legs 16 brace the structure of the container and this is enhanced when the container is loaded.
The illustrated container can be modified by having the upstanding members 24 screwed to the outside of the end walls 14 so eliminating the need for the brackets 26 and leaving the interior of the container freer of protrusions.
Furthermore, brackets or chains can be fixed to the side walls 12 or end walls 14 to enable the container to be supported from a wall such as the wall of a house.
