Abstract

The formed metal slate-like roof cladding is made in individual lengths 10 which have male and female joining means 12, 13. The roof is clad by securing each length 10 with standard fixings working up the roof to the ridge, the lengths being offset by half a "slate" width. <IMAGE>

Description

FORMED PETAL SLATE This invention relates to a formed metal roofing slate Common pitched roofs are generally clad horizontally with natural slate; concrete tiles or vertically fixed profiled metal or fibre cement sheets.
Natural slate/tiled roofs are however relatively expensive; wasteful of material and labour intensive.
Moreover due to their natural weight they require a substantial structure to support them and while the vertically fixed profiled metal and fibre cement cladding is relatively economical it is not as asthetically pleasing to the eye as the horizontally laid slate or tile.
According to the present invention there is provided a roof covering comprising of a flat steel/aluminium sheet formed to simulate the look of natural slate. Being fabricated in strips to be fitted horizontally along the length of the roof with interlocking!snap fit joints.
All being secured with concealed fixings.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by the way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings numbers 1/6; 2/6; 3/6 4/6 5/6 and 6/6 in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective; the cladding in position on the roof trusses; Figure 2 illustrates a perspective of a typical formed metal slate; Figure 3 shows a section through the metal slate: Figure 4 shows the up slope side of the metal slate indicating the male interlocking detail; Figures 5 and 6 show the down slope side of the metal slate showing the female interlocking detail.
Figure 7 indicates a typical interlock between 2 strips of metal tile; Figure 8 indicates a typical eaves detail; Figure 9 shows indentatipns in flat heet to form slate simulations; and Figure 10 gives a perspective view of a typical joint and indentation.
Referring to the drawings the roof cladding comprises interlocking formed metal roofing slate 10 secured to roof supports 16 with standard fixings 15.
Each individual formed metal roofing slate 10 shown in figure 2 has a snap lock joint on the top and bottom edge 12 and 13 with vertical indentations 11 and a riven pattern 18.
Figures 3; 4, 5, 6 and 7 illustrate the snap lock joint.
Figure 8 shows a typical eaves detail. Figures 9 and 10 Illustrate the vertical indentations 11 and horizontal markings 13 which give the sheet its strength and character.
The roof is clad by first fixing the eaves snap lock fitting 16 and then the formed metal slate 10 is snapped into position and fixed with standard fixings 15 to the roof supports 17. The next sheet is fitted as above but offset by one half slate. The cladding then progresses up the roof to the ridge; where a snap lock ridge capping is fitted.

Claims (1)

1 A formed metal roofing slate comprising a metal alloy sheet formed to simulate slate or tiles and being fixed in strips horizontally along the roof with interlocking joints and concealed fixings.
2 A formed metal/alloy roofing slate as claimed in Claim 1 wherein interlocking joints are provided to control the positioning and fitting of the cladding.
3 A roof cladding as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2.
wherein the interlocking joint forms a water tight seal.
4 A formed metal alloy roofing slate as claimed in claim 1 wherein concealed fixing is used to secure the cladding.
5 A formed metal alloy roofing slate as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the fixings used to secure the cladding are of standard design and material.
6 A formed metal alloy roofing slate as claimed in Claim 1 wherein a riven feature is impregnated to give added strength and a slate appearance.
8 A formed metal alloy roof slate as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the vertical indentations provide vertical strength and give slate appearance.
7 A formed metal alloy roof slate as claimed in Claim
1 wherein jointing provides horizontal strength.
9 A roof cladding as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the or each sheet is provided with interlocking joints and is secured with standard fixings.
10 A formed metal alloy, roofing slate substantially as described herein with reference to drawings 1/6 to 6/6 and figures 1-10.
