Abstract
A safety device for use in land vehicles, rail vehicles and aeroplanes comprises a balloon 7, decelerometer 5, gas cylinder 2 and a mounting kit whereby it may be fitted in a vehicle eg behind a sun visor. <IMAGE>
Description
SAFETY BALLOON.
This invention relates to a Safety Balloon
The Safety Balloon is an Invention designed to protect all occupants of a vehicle in the event of a frontal collision
This is achieved by providing a protective barrier between the occupants and the hard surfaces inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
The Safety Balloon is stored in its 'Deflated' form until the sudden deceleration of a collision/accident which activates the inflation of the Safety Balloon which then provides the protective barrier.
Figure 1 shows the Safety Balloon in its 'stored' mode and figures 2 and 3 show the ' inflated' protective barrier mode. Figure 4 shows the components.
The purpose of the Safety Balloon is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in vehicle accidents.
SAFETY BALLOON
According to this invention, it provides a safety device which is tucked away out of sight until released in the event of an accident. When it is activated it provides a high degree of protection from the hard surfaces of the interior of the vehicle. The Safety Balloon can be universally fitted to many vehicles including but not restricted to cars, vans, busses, lorries, planes and trains, both old and new. It can be fitted in front of the front and rear seat passengers, thus offering all occupants the same protection.
The mounting kit (no. 1) is secured on to the steel (or other material) frameworks behind the sun visor in a motor car or appropriate position in other vehicles. attached to the mounting kit is the cylinder (no. 2) which contains compressed gas.
Fixed to the end of the cylinder is the shut off valve (no.
3) which is only used to retain the gas in the cylinder until fitment. Attached to the shut off valve is the release mechanism (no. 4) which is activated by the decelerometer (no. 5). The decelerometer is connected to the power supply for the vehicle by the cable (no. 6). The release valve (no. 4) is also connected to the balloon (no.
7).
SAFETY BALLOON
Sequence of events:
Vehicle collides with something hard, causing the speed
(motion) to reduce very quickly (quicker than an emergency stop). The sudden deceleration activates the decelerometer
(no. 5) which in turn opens the release mechanism (no. 4) which releases the compressed gas from the cylinder (no. 2) which inflates the balloon (no.7) thus providing protection to the occupants. The Safety Balloon is designed to work in a fraction of a second, thus positioning the balloon (no. 7) in front of the occupant before they are thrown forward with the motion of the impact. The balloon (no. 7) partially deflates on impact of the passenger. It is possible to steer the vehicle for a short distance, if the balloon inflates accidentally (the chance of this happening is very small).
Once activated the Safety Balloon must be removed and replaced.
Pt present the Safety Balloon is designed to be positioned behind the sun visor, but at a later stage may replace the visor altogether or to specific order for a motor manufacturer.
Claims (4)
- CLAIM 1. The Safety Balloon provides a protective barrier between the occupant(s) and the hard surfaces of a vehicle both in new and old models. It is not necessary to be fitted at the time of manufacture of the vehicle, unlike the few companies currently marketing a similar product.
- 2. The Safety Balloon as claimed in claim 1 can be universally fitted to all vehicles.
- 3. The Safety Balloon as claimed in claim 1 or claim Z can be fitted to a vehicle in front of the driver, front and back seat passengers
- 4. The Safety Balloon substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 - 7 of the accompanying drawings.
