Abstract

A composition comprising a biocide is applied to the surface of a mould or former and when a polymeric article is produced by shaping (i.e. moulding or forming) of a polymer or polymer or composition using the mould or former, the biocide is incorporated into the surface portion of the article thereby rendering the surface of the article biocidally active. The biocide is preferably chlorhexidine.

Description

POLYNERIC ARTICLES TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to polymeric articles and, in particular to the imparting of biocidal activity to such articles.
BACKGROUND ART Plastics materials (i.e. pol#eric materials) have become ilbiguitous and indispensible in most areas of human existence and endeavour Aside fran the functional attributes of plastic materials which denote their prrn##y usefulness, it is their innocuous nature in contact with humans -hich has allowed plastics to pervade human life so thoroughly. Commercially used plastics materials however, as well as being innocuous to humans are also innocuous to other organisms, including bacteriological pathogens which can be harmful and even life threatening to humans.Plastics surfaces therefore nave the potential to act as breeding and transmission sites for a vast range of bacteria which, while not harmful to the plastics material may be undesirable in contact with human users of plastics artifacts, There exists prior art which claims to incorporate biocidally active agents into high polymeric materials thereby forming plastics materials having disinfectant or bacteriocidal properties.
Such materials, however, suffer fran two inherent dra#Thacks.
1. The biocidally active agents are thermally sensitt e and tend to be degraded or destroyed during the production of plastics articles 2. The process used to incorporate the biocidal materials into the plastics necessitates that the biocide is distributed throughout the polymer thus requiring relatively large quantity of biocide to be incorporated to achieve a desired surface activity.
As a result, both effectiveness and cost of biocidal materials produced are carpranised where conventional moulding materials and techniques are employed.
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION It is an object of the invention to mitigate the disadvantages described above.
The invention is applicable to plastics in general, including rubbers, and related materials.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a composition (referred to below as the "biocidal composition") comprising a biocide (biocidal agent) and being such that it can be applied to the surface of a mould or former and when a polymeric article is produced by shaping (i.e. moulding or forming) of a polymer or polymeric composition using the mould or former, the biocide is incorporated into the surface portion of the article thereby rendering the surface of the article biocidally active.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of producing a polymeric article, comprising shaping a polymer or polymeric composition using a mould or former, to the surface of which a polymeric composition in accordance with the first aspect of the invention has been applied so that the biocide becomes incorporated into the surface portion of the article thereby rendering the surface of the article biocidally active.
It will be appreciated that the biocidal composition is required to be applied to the inner surface of the mould or the or the outer surface of the former.
The biocidal coaposition may be coated on to the surface of the mould or former.

Preferably the biocide is a biocidal agent which is innocuous to humans.
Preferably the biocide is a biocidal agent which is compatible with the polymer or polymeric c#ThosItion i.e. preferably the biocide has no adverse effect on the polymer or polymeric composition.
Preferably the biocide is bacteriocidal.
Preferably the biocidal agent is bound to the mould or former surface prior to and during shaping of the polymeric article until such time as it (i.e. the biocidal agent) becomes incorporated into the surface portion of the article.
The biocldal agent may be chlorhexidine, i.e. l,6-di(4-chlorophenyl diguanide) hexane.
The composition may contain between 5% and 95% by weight chlorhexidine, e.g. as particulate solid, solution, dispersion or in polymeric form. The biocidal coppo#sition may also contain a dispersion and/or carrier medium for the chlorhexidine. Such medium may comprise polyvinyl alcohol and/or one or more cellulosic constituents. The medium may be a solution of cellulose.
The composition may be such that it can be applied to the mould or former surface by spraying, brushing, electrostatic coating or solid application coating (e.g. by providing the composition in a form similar to a paint stick, grease or solid deodorant).
Preferably the shaping of the polymeric article is effected without substantially thermally degrading or otherwise degrading the biocide.
The composition should preferably be such that it affixes itself or adheres to the mould or former surface sufficiently well that the biocide is not substantially dislodged or displaced when the polymeric article is shaped.
The shaping of the polymeric article may be effected by e.g.
injection moulding, compression moulding, resin transfer moulding, casting, rotational moulding, reaction injection moulding, dip coating, latex forming, thermoforming or fluidised bed coating.
Preferably the biocide is transferred permanently into the surface of the article by the shaping process According to one preferred feature of the invention, during and/or after the shaping process, the non-biocidally active component or components of the mould biocidal composition are volatilised, destroyed or otherwise rendered fugitive without the effective activity of the biocide being substantially reduced.
According to another preferred feature of the invention, the non-biocidally active component or components of the biocidal composition may be removed from the surface of the polymeric article by washing.
According to a further preferred feature of the invention, the non-biocidally active component or components of the biocidal composition may be compatible with the surface of the shaped article and remain on or within the surface portion of the article during use of the article.

Claims (22)

  1. I. A composition comprising a biocide and being such that it can be applied to the surface of a mould or former and when a polymeric article is produced by shaping of a polymer or polymeric composition using the mould or former, the biocide is incorporated into the surface portion of the article thereby rendering the surface of the article biocidally active.
  2. 2. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the biocide is a biocidal agent which is innocuous to humans.
  3. 3. A composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the biocide is a biocidal agent which is compatible with the polymer or polymeric composition.
  4. 4. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the biocide is bacteriocidal.
  5. 5. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the biocidal agent is chlorhexidine, i.e. 1,6-di(4-chlorophenyl diguanidehexane.
  6. 6. A composition according to claim 5, containing between 5% and 95% by weight chlorhexidine.
  7. 7. A composition according to claim 6, wherein the chiorhexidine is present as particulate solid, solution, dispersion or in polymeric form.
  8. 8. A composition according to claim 6 or 7, comprising a dispersion and/or carrier medium for the chlorhexidine.
  9. 9. A composition according to claim 8, wherein the carrier medium comprises polyvinyl alcohol andjor one or more cellulosic constituents.
  10. 10. A composition according to claim 9, wherein the carrier medium is a solution of cellulose.
  11. 11. A composition according to any preceding claim, being such that it can be applied to the mould or former surface by spraying, brushing, electrostatic coating or solid application coating.
  12. 12. A composition according to any preceding claim, being such that it affixes itself or adheres to the mould or former surface sufficiently well that the biocide is not substantially dislodged or displaced when the polymeric article is shaped.
  13. 13. A method of producing a polymeric article, comprising shaping a polymer or polymeric composition using a mould or former, to the surface of which a composition in accordance with any of claims 1 to 12 has been applied so that the biocide becomes incorporated into the surface portion of the article thereby rendering the surface of the article biocidally active.
  14. 14. A method according to claim 13, wherein the composition is applied to the inner surface of the mould or the outer surface of the former.
  15. 15. A method according to claim 13 or 14, wherein the composition is coated onto the surface of the mould or former.
  16. 16. A method according to any of claims 13 to 15, wherein the biocide is permanently incorporated into the surface portion of the article.
  17. 17. A method according to any of claims 13 to 16, wherein the biocide is bound to the mould or former surface prior to and during shaping of the polymeric article until such time as it (i.e. the biocide) becomes incorporated into the surface portion of the article.
  18. 18. A method according to any of claims 13 to 17, wherein the shaping of the polymeric article is effected without substantially thermally degrading or otherwise degrading the biocide.
  19. 19. A method according to any of claims 13 to 18, wherein the shaping of the polymeric article effected by injection moulding, compression moulding, resin transfer moulding, casting, rotational moulding, reaction injection moulding, dip coating, latex forming, thermoforming or fluidised bed coating.
  20. 20. A method according to any of claims 13 to 19, wherein during and/or after the shaping process the non-biocidally active component or components of the biocidal composition are volatilised, destroyed or otherwise rendered fugitive without the effective activity of the biocide being substantially reduced.
  21. 21. A method according to any of claims 13 to 19, wherein the nonbiocidally active component or components of the biocidal composition are removed from the surface of the polymeric article by washing.
  22. 22. A method according to any of claims 13 to 19, wherein the nonbiocidally active component or components of the biocidal composition are compatible with the surface of the shaped article and remain on or within the surface portion of the article during use of the article
