Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PICTORIALLY REPRESENTING ARTICLES OF FURNITURE The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for pictorially representing articles of furniture. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for pictorially representing a chair or the like article of furniture, wherein such pictorial representations enable measurement values to be inserted thereon. Such representations are particularly useful in relation to the covering of furniture.
When an article of furniture, such as a threepiece suite, requires covering, it is necessary for a representative of a covering company to visit the premises in which the furniture is located and to obtain measurements from the article of furniture in question, and transfer such measurements to a record sheet so that the desired covering can be prepared.
In relation to the covering of sa suite of furniture, there are available pictorial representations of a number of styles of chair and settees, upon which measurements can be inserted. However, in view of the increasing number of different styles of suites of furniture, representations of all styles of chairs and settees are not available. Even if representations of all such styles were available, same would be too bulky to handle in total.
Another method of supplying the required measurements to enable covering of a suite of furniture to be effected would be for the representative to draw the particular shape of chair and settee concerned; however, all representatives are not good artists.
A further method would be for the representative to take a photograph of the chair. However, current instant cameras do not produce a large enough photograph and therefore it would be necessary for the representative to go away and have the photograph enlarged and then to return and insert the required measurements thereon.
It will thus be seen that all of the current methods of pictorially representing an article of furniture, so that measurements can be inserted thereon, have certain disadvantages. It is an object of the present invention to at least minimise such disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a method for pictorially representing an article of furniture so that measurements of the actual article of furniture being represented may be inserted thereon, said article of furniture having a number of portions, comprising: a) selecting from one or more first planar members, each member having one or more pictorial representations of a first portion of an article of furniture thereon and each representation having an alignment means associated therewith, the identical or nearest shape of the pictorial representation of said first portion of the article of furniture corresponding to the first portion of the actual article of furniture; b) transferring said pictorial representation of said first portion of the article of furniture and associated alignment means to a sheet member to form a copy thereof;; c) selecting from one or more second or subsequent planar members, each member having one or more pictorial representations of a second or subsequent portion of an article of furniture thereon and each representation having an alignment means associated therewith, the identical or nearest shape of the pictorial representation of said first or subsequent portion of the article of furniture corresponding to the first or subsequent portion of the actual article of furniture;; d) transferring said pictorial representation of said first or subsequent portion of the article of furniture to said sheet member, after firstly aligning the alignment means of said pictorial representation of said second or subsequent portion of said article of furniture with said copy of said alignment means of said pictorial representation of said first portion of said article of furniture on said sheet members; e) repeating steps c) and d) for subsequent portions as necessary; whereby, when copies of the pictorial representations of the portions of the article of furniture are transferred to said sheet member, after the alignment means of the second and subsequent portions have been aligned with the alignment means of the first portion of the article of furniture, a complete pictorial representation of such article of furniture is obtained.
Also in accordance with the present invention there is provided apparatus for pictorial representing an article of furniture having a number of portions, comprising one or more first planar members, each member having one or more pictorial representations of a first portion of an article of furniture thereon and each representation having an alignment means associated therewith, and one or more second or subsequent planar members, each second or subsequent planar member having one or more pictorial representations of a second or subsequent portion of an article of furniture, and each representation having an alignment means associated therewith, whereby, in use, when a copy of such representation of said first portion of said article of furniture is transferred to a sheet member together with the associated alignment means and thereafter when a copy of said representations of said second or subsequent portions of said article of furniture are transferred to said sheet after the alignment means have been aligned together, a complete pictorial representation of such article of furniture is obtained.
The present invention will be further described in relation to a chair, however, it is to be understood that the method and apparatus of the present invention can be utilised in. connection with any article of furniture.
In the case of a chair, the method and apparatus of the invention preferably utilises a plurality of first and second or subsequent planar members, each suitably in the form of a sheet or template, each planar member having one or more shapes of a portion of the chair pictorially represented thereon and such first and second or subsequent planar member having alignment means associated therewith.
By utilising such method and apparatus, and by having a selection of, say, 20-30 different types of backs or backs and wings of a chair, and 10-20 different fronts of a chair and 20-30 different arms of a chair, as well as possibly 10-20 different complete backs and sides of a chair, it is possible to pictorially represent virtually any type of chair currently available on the market. Even if the pictorial representation of the complete chair is not entirely identical with the particular chair in question which is being pictorially represented, the measurements provided in respect of the various portions of the chair will indicate to the person producing the cover, the exact shape which is required to cover the chair.
In carrying out the method of the invention in relation to a chair, a representative would view the particular chair which is to be covered and firstly select the nearest back or back and sides of such chair appearing in the different types of backs or backs and sides of chair from the plurality of representations of such backs or backs and sides in his possession. Once the identical or nearest shape is observed then same is transferred to a sheet of paper, suitably tracing paper.
At the same time, the alignment means are dully marked on the sheet of paper. Any form of alignment means may be utilised such as a cross arrangement. Secondly, the representative would select the nearest front pictorially represented in the plurality of fronts of chairs in his possession and would then duly transfer same to the sheet of paper having firstly aligned the alignment means with that already appearing on the sheet of paper in association with the backs or back and sides of the chair. Thirdly, the representative would then pick the nearest shaped set of arms from the plurality of such pictorial representations in his possession and would then again transfer same to the sheet of paper after having aligned the alignment means with that already appearing on the paper. Once such procedure has been completed, a pictorial representation of the entire chair should have been provided on the sheet of paper.
The representative would then transfer the various measurements required to such pictorial representation so that a cover for such chair may be prepared.
It will be noted that the alignment means for each particular portion of the chair are so positioned that when alignment is effected on the sheet of paper to which the representation is to be transferred, a complete pictorial representation of the chair will be obtained.
In a preferred embodiment, each of the pictorial representations of a portion of the chair may have measurement markings applied thereto so that such measurement markings can also be transferred to the sheet of paper.
The present invention will be further illustrated, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figs. 1A and 1B show pictorial representations of a plurality of different backs and sides of a chair, each different back and side having an alignment means associated therewith; Figs. 2A and 2B show pictorial representations of a plurality of different fronts of a chair, each different front having an alignment means associated therewith; Figs. 3A and 3B show pictorial representations of a number of different sets of arms of a chair, each different set of arms having alignment means associated therewith; Fig. 4 shows pictorial representations of a number of different backs and complete sides of a chair, each different back and side having an alignment means associated therewith; and Fig. 5 is a pictorial representation of an entire chair produced from a combination of pictorial representations of a back and wings, a front and a set of arms shown respectively in Figs. 1A, 2A and 3A.
To illustrate the invention in connection with a particular chair, the user of the method and apparatus of the present invention would firstly select the pictorial representation of the back and sides of a chair shown in Figs. 1A and 1B most nearly resembling the back and sides of the chair to be pictorially represented. In the pictorial representation of the complete chair illustrated in Fig. 5, the topmost pictorial representation in Fig. 1A was selected and the pictorial representation thereof was transferred to the chair shown in Fig. 5. Such transfer was effected by tracing the pictorial representation of the back and sides of a chair 10 on to a sheet of tracing paper and also adding the set of alignment means 11 thereto.
Other pictorial representations of the back and sides or back of a chair can be obtained by transferring the pictorial representations of the back and sides of a chair 10', 10" and 10"', or the back of a chair 10'' '', to a sheet of tracing paper and also by adding the respective set of alignment means 11', 11", 11"' or 11"" thereto.
Next, the user would select the pictorial representation of the front of the chair shown in Figs.
2A and 2B most nearly resembling the front of the chair to be pictorially represented. In the complete representation of the chair shown in Fig. 5, the topmost front 20 was transferred to the representation illustrated in Fig. 5 after firstly aligning the alignment means 21 with the alignment means previously transferred to the sheet in connection with the back and sides 10. Other pictorial representations of the front of a chair could be obtained by transferring the pictorial representation of the front of the chair 20', 20" or 20"' to the representation of the back and sides of the chair after firstly aligning the respective alignment means 20', 20" or 20"' with the alignment means presumably transferred to the sheet in connection with the back and sides of the chair.
Finally, the user would select the pictorial representation of the different sets of arms illustrated in Figs. 3A and 3B most nearly resembling the set of arms of the chair. In the pictorial representation of the complete chair shown in Fig. 5, the topmost set of arms illustrated in Figs. 3A was selected and such set of arms 30 were transferred to the pictorial representation shown in Fig. 5 after firstly aligning the alignment means 31 with the alignment means previously inserted on the sheet when transferring the pictorial representation of the back and sides to such sheet.Other pictorial representations of the set of arms of a chair can be obtained by transferring pictorial representation of the set of arms 30' or 30" to the pictorial representation of the back and sides of the chair after firstly aligning the respective alignment means 31' or 31" with the alignment means previously transferred to the sheet in connection with the back and sides of the chair.
Thus, the complete shape of a particular style of chair has been reproduced and then the user would insert appropriate measurements thereon.
The plurality of pictorial representations of the shape of different portions of a chair 40, 40' can have measurement markings 42, 42' already provided thereon, in association with alignment means 41, 41', as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The various pictorial representations of the different type of styles of portions of a chair illustrated in the drawings of Figs. 1 to 4, are only a small number of the actual different shapes available.
Thus, a user would select the nearest or identical shape of each particular portion and then build up a substantially identical representation of the actual chair. It can thus be seen, that by the use of a relatively small number of sheets or templates having pictorial representations of different styles of portions of furniture thereon, it is possible to substantially provide a pictorial representation of substantially any particular type of an article of furniture.
