Abstract

A joint (2) which is easy to fold joins segments (4) of a playpen structure. The joint (2) has two tubular elements (6), an enforcing strip (22), a shell (28), and a plurality of rivets. Each of the tubular elements (6) has a circular channel (20), a slot (10) extending an arc on top thereof, and a hole (18) in both sides (16). The tubular segment (4) has a lateral hole in both sides thereof. The tubular segment (4) is inserted through the channel (20). A rivet is inserted through the slot (10) of the tubular element (6) and the hole of the tubular segment (4). The enforcing strip (22) is mounted on the tubular elements and has a top defining a central opening (24) and two sides each having two holes (26) residing below the central opening (24). The shell (28) has a top (30) defining a convex part (32) above the central opening (24) of the enforcing strip (22) and two sides (34) each defining two holes (36). Description

JOINT FOR SEGMENTS OF A PLAYPEN STRUCTURE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a joint for segments of a playpen structure.
Generally, playpens are used in families having babies.
The playpens provide safe and comfort places for babies to sleep and play in. As parents sometimes carry their babies out, it is desired that the playpens be portable, i.e., the playpen structures be folded.
Conventionally, segments of a playpen structure are made of metal tubes. This type of playpen structure is strong, but inconvenient to fold, i.e., it is not easy for parents to carry this type of playpen with them.
Therefore, the present invention is intended to obviate or at least to mitigate the above-mentioned problem.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a joint for segments of a playpen structure.
It is another cbject of the present invention to provide a joint which is easy to fold.
These and additional objects, if not specifically set forth herein, will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the detailed description of embodiments below, with reference of the accompanying drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a joint in accordance with the present invention; FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of a joint in accordance with the present invention; FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a joint in accordance with the present invention; and FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a playpen employing joints in accordance with the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to FIG. 4, a playpen structure 1 has segments being joined with joints 2.
Referring to FIG. 1, two segments 4 are joined with a joint 2.
Referring to FIG. 2, a joint 2 has two tubular elements 6, an enforcing strip 22, and a shell 28.
The tubular element 6 has a top 8, a bottom 12, and two sides 16, thereby defining a channel 20 of a circular crosssection. The top 8 is formed with a slot 10 which extends over 180 , transverse to a length of the tubular element.
The bottom 12 has a plurality of ribs 14 which each extend along a length of the tubular element 6 to provide higher stiffness. The side 16 is formed with a hole 18.
The enforcing strip 22 has a central opening 24 and two holes 26 on both sides thereof.
The shell 28 has a top 30 and two sides 34. The top 30 has a convex 32. The side 34 has two holes 36 therethrough and an inner surface which is formed with a concave 38.
In this embodiment, the segment 4 is a tube and is formed with two lateral holes 5. However, in some other embodiments, the segment 4 might be a solid rod form with a hole 5' (not shown) extending transversely therethrough.
The segment 4 is inserted in the tubular element 6. A rivet 40 has a head 42. The rivet 40 is inserted through the slot 10 and the hole 5.
The enforcing strip 22 is mounted on the two tubular elements 6, thereby restraining the rivet 40 in position.
The shell 28 is mounted on the enforcing strip 22.
Each side of the enforcing strip 22 are received in one of the concaves 36.
Two rivets 44 are each inserted through the holes 36, 26 and 16, thereby joining the segments 4.
Referring to FIG. 3, the rivet 40 does not project beyond the segment 4 while the head 42 remains within the slot 10. When a downward load is exerted on the playpen, the enforcing strip 22 and rivets At and the rivets 40 join the segments 4 and remain the playpen structure in shape.
As shown in phantom line, the joint 2 can be turned 1800 around the segment 4. The tubular elements 6 can be inserted through the central opening 24 and remained above the convex 32, thereby allowing the joint 2 to be folded.
While the present invention has been explained in relation to its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that variations thereof will be apparent to those skilled in the art upon reading this specification. Therefore, the present invention is intended to cover all such variations as shall fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS:
    1. A joint for joining segments of a playpen structure, wherein the segment includes a hole transversely extending therethrough, said joint comprises: two tubular elements, each defining a circular channel through which the segment is insertable, a slot extending an arc therearound, and a hole on both sides; a rivet defining a head and being insertable through said slot of said tubular element and said hole of said segment; an enforcing strip being mountable on said tubular elements and including a top defining a central opening and two sides each defining two holes residing below said central opening; a shell including a top defining a convex above said central opening and two side walls each defining two holes each corresponding to said hole of said enforcing strip; and two rivets, each being insertable through said holes of said shell, of said enforcing strip, and of said tubular element.
