Abstract

The headlight has a reflector (10) which is arranged adjustably on the bodywork (46) of the motor vehicle, in a retaining frame (48). The reflector (10) has a holder (16) for an additional reflector (14) which is adjustably connected to the reflector (10). On its front end, the additional reflector (14) has an edge (30) which is radially bent around and, in the upper region of the additional reflector (14) is rigidly connected to the reflector (10). Provided in the lower region of the additional reflector (14) is an adjusting screw (40) which passes through the edge (30) and is screwed into a threaded hole (42) in the reflector (10). A seal (38) is clamped in between the edge (30) of the additional reflector (14) and the reflector (10), by means of which seal (38) the inner space of the reflector (10) is sealed and a restoring force is produced between the two reflectors (10, 14). The additional reflector (14) is connected to the reflector (10) without play by means of the restoring force. <IMAGE>

Description

P, l p, 22 5n316 "I Headlight for motor vehicles
Prior Art
The invention is based on a headlight for motor vehicles of the generic type of Claim 1.
Such a headlight is disclosed by FR-Al 2,618,108. This headlight has a reflector which is arranged in a retaining frame mounted on the bodywork of the vehicle. The reflector can be pivoted to allow adjustment about a horizontal and/or a vertical axis. The reflector is used f or producing a main beam and has a holder in which an additional reflector is detachably mounted, which is used for producing a dipped beam. The additional reflector must be precisely aligned relative to the reflector in order to be able to adjust the dipped beam and the main beam correctly at the same time. However, in the case of the known headlight, no capability is provided for adjusting the additional reflector relative to the reflector.
Advantages of the invention 1 The headlight according to the invention for motor vehicles, having the characterising features of Claim 1 has in contrast the advantage that the additional reflector is adjustable and is connected to the reflector without play by the spacer element.
Advantageous refinements and developments of the invention are characterised in the subclaims. In the case of the design characterised in Claim 4, no additional component is required for the spacer.
Drawing An exemplary embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and is explained in more detail in the following description. Figure 1 shows a front view of a headlight and Figure 2 shows a vertical longitudinal section of the headlight, along the line II-II in Figure 1.
Description of the exemplary embodiment
A headlight, which is shown in the figures, for motor vehicles has a reflector 10 which is used for producing a dipped beam and consists of synthetic material, especially a thermosetting plastic synthetic material. The light outlet opening of the reflector 10 is covered by a light glass 12 which can be provided with elements that act optically or can be constructed as a smooth glass. The reflector 10 has a region towards the vehicle centre which is not used f or the dipped beam and in which a holder 16 for an additional reflector 14 is constructed.
The holder 16 has an approximately tubular shape with a front section 18 tapering conically in the light.direction and a hollow-cylindrical rear section 20. The additional reflector 14 is here part of a fog light and contains essentially elliptical section curves in axial longitudinal sections. An opaque shutter 24 is arranged away from the apex of the additional reflector 14 in the light direction, under the optical axis 22 of said additional reflector, and an objective lens 26 is 1, !jl!:,:
J 1 arranged away from said shutter in the light direction. The top edge 28 of the shutter 24 is imaged by the objective lens 26 as a light-dark boundary in the light distribution produced by the fog light. The shape and profile of the top edge 28 of the shutter 24 are governed by the legal regulations for the light-dark boundary.
The additional reflector 14 is produced from sheet metal and an edge 30 is bent around thereon on its front end, which edge initially has an inner region extending approximately radially with respect to the optical axis 22, subsequently has a region extending approximately parallel to the optical axis 22 and, adjacent thereto, once again has a radial outer region. The shutter 24 and the objective lens 26 are held in a support 32 which is mounted on the edge 30 of the additional reflector 14 and is arranged inside the holder 16. An incandescent lamp 34 whose electrical connections are covered by means of a cap 36 is inserted into the additional reflector 14 from its rear side. The edge 30 of the additional reflector 14 and the support 32 are covered by the conical front section 18 of the holder 16, so that they are not visible through the light glass 12.
Between the end side of the inner radial section of the edge 30 painting in the light direction and the end of the hollow-cylindrical section 20 of the holder 16 pointing in the opposite direction to the light, an elastically deformable seal 38 is arranged. The seal 38 is constructed as a closed ring so that no dirt and no moisture can penetrate through the holder 16 into the inner space of the headlight which is bounded by the reflector 10 and light glass 12. In the upper region of the additional reflector 14, its edge 30 is screwed in its radially outer region to the reflector 10, in a manner which is not shown. In the lower region of the additional reflector 14, the radial outer section of the edge 30 has a hole through which an adjusting screw 40 passes, which is screwed into a threaded hole 42 in the rear side of the reflector 10. In its original shape before installation of the additional reflector 14, the seal 38 is oversize with respect to the distance between the additional reflector 14 and the reflector 10 which distance is required for correct alignment between these two parts. During installation and adjustment, the seal 38 is elastically compressed over the adjusting screw 40 and the edge 30 so that the two reflectors 10, 14 are connected to one another without play. During adjustment of the additional reflector 14, the adjusting screw 40 is turned into or out of the threaded hole 42 as a result of which the distance between the two reflectors is varied. The additional reflector 14 can in this case pivot about its upper mounting point, by elastic deformation of the edge 30.
The restoring force required for play-free connection of the reflectors 10, 14 can also be produced by one or more compression springs 44 which are clamped in between the two reflectors and are shown in Figure 2. The compression spring 44, of which only the lower half is shown in Figure 2, surrounds the adjusting screw 40 coaxially, but can also be arranged differently. In addition, a different elastically deformable part, for example a rubber pad 45 of which only its top half is shown in Figure 2, can be arranged as the spacer between the reflectors 10. 14, instead of the compression spring 44.
The reflector 10 is arranged in a retaining frame 48 which is mounted on the bodywork 46 of the motor vehicle in a manner which is not shown such that it can pivot about a horizontal axis and about a vertical axis. The additional reflector 14 is adjusted relative to the reflector 10 by means of the adjusting screw 40 such that the additional reflector 14 is also correctly aligned in an alignment in the retaining frame in which the reflector 10 is correctly aligned.
