Abstract

A container for growing plants comprises a bag-like body made of a synthetic plastics material for holding growing medium such as peat 4. The body is formed with slits (5) to provide planting sites. The body has an open top and tape (3) is stitched around its bottom and two sides, a loop of the tape extending across the top of the body to serve as a means for hanging the container in position. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Containers for Plants Field of the Invention This invention relates to containers for plants, particularly containers in the form of bags for holding a growing medium, such as peat, in which the plants grow.
Disclosure of the Invention According to the invention a container for growing plants comprises a bag-like body to hold growing medium, the body having an open top and a closed or substantially closed bottom, tape being stitched to the body around its edges, save for the top, a loop of tape extending across the top of the body to serve as a means for hanging the container in position.
The tape is therefore stitched to the body over an extensive length, so as to spread the force which is applied to the stitching when a loaded bag is hung up, thereby minimising the risk of failure of the attachment between the hanging loop and the body.
In use, the body is formed with openings such as cuts or slits and the roots of plants are inserted through the openings and pushed into the growing medium (eg peat) in the body, leaving the foliage on the outside of the bag to grow and, eventually, to cover the body. Plants may also be planted into the open top of the body. The container may be supplied to the end user leaving the latter to fill the body with growing medium, cut openings in the desired positions and then insert desired plants. Alternatively, the container can be provided to the user ready filled with growing medium and pre-formed with cuts or slits, leaving the end user to select plants. As a further alternative, the container may be provided in a ready-tohang form, being pre-filled with growing medium, pre-cut with slits and pre-planted.
The body is preferably of a synthetic plastics sheet material and is conveniently obtained as a tubular length of material from a roll thereof, the tape then being folded around the side edges and the bottom of the body and being stitched thereto. The holes formed in the body by the stitching preferably provides drainage for water from the lower end of the body, whilst ensuring that water added through the top of the body is held in contact with the growing medium for a length of time sufficient to wet the latter.
A container according to the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an unfilled container according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a container prefilled with growing medium such a peat and pre-formed with slits at planting sites, and Figure 3 is a perspective view similar to that of Figure 2 but showing the container planted with plants at the planting sites.
Referring to Figure 1, the container comprises a bag-like plastics body 1 formed from a length of tubular plastics material, the length being cut from a roll thereof. The end of the tube which is to form the upper end of the container is folded over at 2 and a length of nylon tape 3 is then stitched around the two sides of the body and the bottom, a loop 3 of tape extending around the open top of the body to serve as a hanging loop.
Figure 2 shows the body filled with peat 4 and formed with slits 5 at desired planting sites. These sites may be positioned anywhere on the body and may be on one or both sides thereof, depending on the intended hanging location.
The roots of plants are then pushed through the slits into the growing medium, leaving the foliage outside the body.
Further plants are planted in the open top of the body.
The plant foliage soon covers the whole of the body, completely obliterating the latter from view, thereby presenting an attractive tubular flower and/or foliage arrangement which can be hung up at any convenient location with the aid of the hanging loop 3.
The stitching perforates the plastics material and provides drainage.

Claims
1. A container for growing plants, comprising a bag-like body to hold growing medium, the body having an open top and a closed or substantially closed bottom, tape being stitched to the body around its edges, save for the top, a loop of tape extending across the top of the body to serve as a means for hanging the container in position.
2. A container according to claim 1, wherein the body is of a synthetic plastics sheet material.
3. A container according to claim 2, wherein the body is made from a tubular length of plastics material from a roll thereof, the tape being folded around the side edges and the bottom of the body and being stitched thereto, the holes formed in the body by the stitching in use providing drainage for water from the lower end of the body, whilst ensuring that water added through the top of the body is held in contact with the growing medium for a length of time sufficient to wet the latter.
4. A container according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the body is formed with openings such as cuts or slits though which the stems of growing plants can extend.
5. A container according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the body is filled with growing medium ready for planting.
6. A container according to claim 4, wherein the body is filled with growing medium from which grow plants which extend through the openings in the body so that the plant foliage is on the outside of the container.
7. A container for growing plants, constructed and arranged substantially as herein particularly described with reference to Figure 1, 2 or 3 of the accompanying drawings.
