Abstract

A roller comprises a number of spaced, co-axial wheels, each having spaced around its periphery a number of pairs of rollers 6. Each pair has a smooth-surfaced roller 4 and a roller 5, the surface of which presents an array of points. Each roller pair can be selectively manually positioned so that a chosen roller 4 or 5 or neither projects beyond the periphery of its associated wheel. <IMAGE>

Description

CONVEYORS FOR PRINTING PRESSES The present invention relates to conveyors for use in printing presses.
One known conveyor comprises an array of wheels which are held in mutually parallel tc-axial spaced apart relationship by parallel connecting rods. The conveyor is driven in rotation about its axis, and the rims of the rotating wheels frictionally engage the print material to be conveyed, and sweep the print material onwards through the printing press. A large number of such conveyors are provided in a printing press to convey the print naterial through the various work stations of the printing pres.
when monochrone printing is to be applied, this is usually done by application of the one colour by neans of a continuous wash at a single work station. when nulti-colour printing is to be applied, this is usually done by applying each colour separately by means of a separate dot matrix printing process at separate work stations. When multi-colour printing on a generally monochrome background is required, both dot matrix and wash techniques may be used.
One disadvantage which arises with conveyors or the type described above is that when the print material is conveve through a substantial angle it bears more firml agair.sv the rims of the wheels and becomes marked by the wneels.
The above disadvantagr has bQQn substantially overcome by an arrangement comprising the provision of small rollers on the connecting rods, each roller having an outer surface in the form of an array of needles, with the tips of the needles projecting just proud of the rims of the wheels so that the rollers assist in conveying the print material and reduce the extent to which the print material bears against the rims of the wheels. This arrangement has proved generally satisfactory. However, when very high guality monochrome printing is required, this arrangemant is not entirely satisfactory, becauss the tips of the needles do in fact leave very tiny marks on the printed material.
The above disadvantage arising in the case of high quality monochrome printing has been substantially overcome by an arrangement comprising elongated rollers with padded surfaces which project just proud of the rims of the wheels. However, these se rollers with padded surfaces are not suitable for us in mult4-colour printing because the rollers pick up wet ink or a particular colour from one region of the print maternal and deposit the ink at another unwanted region.
According to the invention there is provided a conveyor for use in a printing press of the type comprising two or more wheels which are held in mutually parallel co-axial spaced apart relationship by connecting means, characterised in that each wheel is provided with rollers mutually spaced apart about the rim of the wheel and raven smcoth rolling surfaces, and rollers mutually spaced apart about the rim of the wheel, having needle rolling surfaces, the arrangement being such that either the rollers with the smcoth rolling surfaces or the rollers with the needle rolling surfaces may be brought into operational positions just proud of the rim of the wheel.
In a preferred construction the rollers are grouped in pairs, each pair comprising a roller having a smooth surface and a roller having a needle surface, and each pair of rollers is mounted on a roller-support frame which may be pivoted so as to bring one or other roller to the operational position.
The invention will now be described more particularly with the rererence to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, a preferred construction of conveyer according to the invention. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective vie of the conveyor; and Figure 2 is a perspective view on a larger scale of a detail af one of the wheels Referssing now to Figure 1, the conveyor comprises tree wheels la, ib, 1c; a connecting rod 2 for holding the wheels in the mutual relationship illustrated in Figure 1; and two drive shafts 3a, 3b for drving the conveyor in rotation. Each wheel la, lb, lo Is provided with pairs of rollers 4,9, each pair A,5 being mounted cn 9 roller-support rae and the roller-support frames 6 being mutually spaced apart about the rim of the wheel 1a, 1b or 1c.
Referring now to Figure 2, each roller-support frame 6 supports a roller 4 having a smooth rolling surface and a roller 5 having a needle rolling surface, The wheel 1 is provided with recesses 7 for receiving the roller-support frames c, and springs 8 for biassing tha roller-support frames 6 into the recesses 7. The roller-support frames 6 can be moved to any one of three positions. Firstly, the roller-support frame 6 may be sated in the corresponding recess 7 so that the roller 4 with the smooth rolling surface projects beyond the rim of the wheel 1. Secondly, thQ rollcir-support fray. 6 nay bQ seated in the corresponding recess 7 so that the roller 5 with the needle surface projects just beyond the rim of the wheel 1. Thirdly, the roller-support frame may be disposed in the orientation shown by the dashed line in which case neither roller projects beyond the rim of the wheels. The roller-support frames 6 are moved manually between the three positions. The first position is useful for monochrome printing. The second position is useful or colour printing.
The third position is useful for low quality printing.
