Abstract

A barrel comprises an inner skin 15 and an outer skin 14 defining a cavity 5 therebetween and a well 4 for receiving iced water, the well 4 communicating with the cavity 5 by way of drainage vents in the well 4 such that iced water placed in the well 4 flows into the cavity 5 and cools the beer in the barrel. The keg may include a reservoir for CO2 gas. <IMAGE>

Description

GRAVITY DISPENSE KEG This invention relates to a gravity dispense keg.
Gravity kegs or firkins are normally used for the sale of beers in public houses and are usually arranged lengthwise on the bar counter or gantry. The beer served from these firkins is non-pasteurised and live-yeasted. It must be vented and handled carefully. Cooling is a problem with these barrels.
The present invention will dispense beer by gravity but will also have a simple cooling system to help maintain the correct temperature and so control the conditioning of the beer.
The invention will incorporate a sister keg to dispense pasteurised carbonated beer with a low-pressure top-up conditioning system. This is to replace lost carbonation as the keg empties.
There will also be a mock barrel sheath to slip on to the keg.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 shows a front view of the keg; Fig 2 a top view of the keg; Fig 3 a cross-section showing the cooling system; Fig 4 a cross-section illustrating the construction of the keg; Fig 5 a cross-section of the sister keg showing the top-up conditioning system; Fig 6 a top view of the sister keg showing the position of the top-up conditioning system; Fig 7 a cross-section through top of sister keg showing position of gas reservoir; Fig 8 a front view of the mock barrel sheath; Fig 9 a cross-section through mock barrel sheath; Fig 10 the lid of the sheath; and Fig 11 a view of the sheath from the top showing the rim.
The keg is filled with beer at aperture (1) which is also the fitting point for the beer-dispensing tap (2) which is secured to the keg by being driven through a plastic bung.
The beer is vented through the venting cock (3) and the keg cooled by iced water which is poured into the well of the keg (4) and enters the cavity (7) surrounding the beer reservoir (6) through the draining vents (7). The keg is carried by grip-rail (8).
The sister keg has a gas reservoir (9) for C02 gas, etc which is filled at point (10). The gas is released into the beer reservoir (6) by the air cock (11) and passes into the beer reservoir (6) via the gas pipe (12) and the ring and tail fitting (13).
The keg is constructed of a light alloy and has an outer skin (14) which forms a cavity (5) with the inner skin (15) of the beer reservoir (6).
The beer reservoir (6) sits on the outer skin (14) at the base of the keg (16) and is sealed along this area. The outer and inner skins also form a seal along the base of the well (17).
The mock barrel sheath is made of fibreglass with an insulated lining and has a slot (18) for the dispensing tap (2) to extrude.
The top rim (19) of the sheath sits on top of the keg, allowing the sheath and keg to be carried by the grip-rail (8).
There is also a insulated lid (20).

Claims (6)

claims
1. A barrel having a cooling system for maintaining the temperature and condition of beer in the barrel.
2. A barrel according to claim 1 wherein the cooling system comprises an inner skin and an outer skin defining a cavity therebetween and a well for receiving iced water, the well communicating with the cavity by way of drainage vents in the well such that iced water placed in the well flows into the cavity and cools the beer the barrel.
3. A barrel according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the conditioning means comprises a C02 gas reservoir in communication with the interior of the barrel and means for controlling the flow of C02 gas into the barrel.
4. A barrel according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the barrel is constructed of a light alloy material.
5. A barrel according to any one of the preceding claims wherein a mock barrel sheath is provided to cover the barrel, the sheath being formed of fibreglass material with an insulated lining.
