Abstract

An expansion bolt includes an elongate hollow cylinder 22 having axial slots 222 at both ends, and an elongate screw-threaded rod 2 inserted into the elongate hollow cylinder 22, with the end 20 of the elongate threaded rod 2 formed as an enlarged drilling bit 21 which also serves to expand the cylinder 22. The hexagonal head 25 of the rod 2 is rotated with the rod 2 engaged in the nut 24, to pull the bit 21 into the end of the cylinder 22. <IMAGE>

Description

EXPANSION BOI,T The invention relates to an expansion bolt, more particularly to improvements relating to an expansion bolt.
Figure 1 shows an expansion bolt of the prior art.
As illustrated, it includes a threaded rod 1 having a cross head at one end thereof, an elongated hollow cylinder 12 having a plurality of axial slots formed at two ends of the same, and a tapered nut 13 having an internal thread 11 to engage the threaded rod 1.
To fix the expansion bolt in a wall, a hole similar to the size of the elongated hollow cylinder 12 must be drilled in the wall. The threaded rod 1 is inserted into the hollow cylinder 12 so that the threaded end extends out. The tapered nut 13 is threadably mounted on the protruding threaded end of the threaded rod 1.
Then, the whole expansion bolt is put into the hole 14.
When the cros head of the threaded rod 1 is rotated, the tapered nut 13 does not rotate and so is threadably drawn into the hollow cylinder 12, thereby expanding the er.d 10 of the hollow cylinder 12, fixing the asseriJly tightly in the hole.
The drawback of the above-mentioned expansion bolt is that one has to use a properly sized drill bit, similar to the size of the hollow cylinder, to bore a hole in a wall whenever one wishes to fie the expansion bolt therein. This is very inconvenient.
often, the tapered nut 13 to be used with the threaded rod 1 is misplaced. When this occurs it takes extra time to locate or replace said lost nut.
It is the main object of the present invention to provide an expansion bolt set which includes a threaded rod having a drill bit at one end thereof, so that there is no need to drill a hole for. inserting the present expansion bolt set, as in the prior art ones.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an expansion bolt set which can engage the mounting surface more securely than the prior art ones.
Accordingly, an expansion bolt of the present invention includes a threaded rod having a hexagonal head at one end thereof, and a hollow cylinder having a plurality of axial slots at both ends thereof. The elongated threaded rod is sleeved into the hollow cylinder so that the foot end of the threaded rod extends out of one end of the hollow cylinder. The out;;ard extending end of the elongated threaded rod tapers outward to a cylindrical portion which is wider than the internal diameter of the hollow cylinder, and which is tipped with a pointed drilling bit. The hollow cylinder has a plurality of radial projections at one end thereof, said projections extending from the outer surface of said hollow cylinder.
other features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent in the following detailed description, including drawings, all of which show a non-limiting form of the invention, and of which: Figure 1 is an exploded view of an expansion bolt of the prior art.
Figure 2 is an expansion bolt of the prior art in applied configuration.
Figure 3 is an exploded view of an expansion bolt of the present invention.
Figure 4 is an expansion bolt of the present invention in applied configuration.
Figure 5 is an another form of an expansion bolt sf the present invention.
Referring to Figure 3, an expansion bolt of the present invention includes a. threaded rod 2 having a hexagonal screw head 25 at one end thereof and a hollow cylinder 22 . Both the screw head 25 and the threaded zori 2 are of a smaller diameter than the internal diameter of the hollow cylinder 22. The other end 20 of the threaded rod 2 tapers outward increasing in diameter to a solid cylindrical drilling bit 21 which has a larger diameter than the internal diameter of the hollow cylinder 22.
A groove 34 extends from a point on the threaded rod 2 where the increased diameter drilling bit 21 begins to the pointed tip 33 of the drill bit 21. The groove 34 gradually widens towards the tip 33.
The hollow cylinder 22 has a diameter wide enough to let the threaded rod pass through, and a plurality of axial slots 222 at both ends and a plurality of radial projections 221 extending from the outer surface of the hollow cylinder 22. The axial slots 222 have open ends, as depicted in the drawings.
When mounting the expansion bolt of the present invention in a surface, one does not need to drill a hole as in the prior art. It is only necessary to insert the threaded rod 2 into the hollow cylinder 22 so the drilling bit 21 of the threaded rod 2 extends out from one end of the hollow cylinder 22. Then the expansion bolt is fixed to the drill so the expansion bolt serves as a drilling tool. Thus a hole approximately equal to the size of the hollow cylinder 22 is drilled in the surface.
At this condition, the assembly having been inserted into the hole, a ring washer 23 with a through -hole smaller than the hollow cylinder 22 but wide enough to let the threaded rod pass through, is sleeved over the hexagonal head of the threaded rod to abut the hollow cylinder 22. A nut 24 is mounted over the ring washer 23 and is threadably engaged with the threaded rod 2. The hexagonal head 25 of the threaded rod 2 is turned in an anti-clockwise direction by a wrench, causing the threaded rod 2 to be drawn outward, which in turn draws the drilling bit 21 outward, thereby expanding the end of the hollow cylinder 22. Since there are a plurality of radial projections 221 extending from the outer surface of the hollow cylinder 22, the hollow cylinder 22 is fixed in the surface, a snown in Figure 4.
Figure 5 shows another preferred embodiment of the present ir.vention. In this embodiment, a wash ring and a threaded nut are not included. The operation of fixing the embodiment in the surface is however still as explained above.
