Abstract

A tool is provided for blocking a portion of a pipe upstream of a bend. The tool comprises an elongate member 1 having a seal 2 located between two lengths of coiled springs 3 and 4. The seal 2 comprises a cylindrical shaft 5 from which there extends three annular flanges 7 which form a close fit with the internal wall of the pipe to be blocked. There is a nose guide 10 provided at the leading end of the tool and a threaded stud 12 for connection to a push rod or handle at the trailing end of the tool. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: A Tool for Blocking a Portion of a Pipe Upstream of a Bend The present invention relates to a tool for blocking a portion of a pipe upstream of a bend.
According to the present invention, there is provided a tool for blocking a portion of a pipe upstream of a bend, the tool comprising an elongate member having means to form a seal with the bore of the pipe, the tool being adapted to negotiate the bend to locate the sealing means within the upstream portion of the pipe when the member is pushed along the pipe.
An embodiment of a suitable tool in accordance with the present invention will now be particularly described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which : Figure 1 is a longitudinal view of the tool, Figure 2 shows the tool in use blocking the bore of a portion of a pipe upstream of a bend, and Figure 3 shows the same pipe with the pipe portion downstream of the bend now removed.
Referring to the drawings, the tool comprises an elongate member 1 having a seal 2 located between two lengths of coiled springs 3 and 4.
The seal 2 comprises a cylindrical shaft 5 from which there extends at least one, preferably a plurality and in this case three, spaced apart annular sealing flanges 7. The shaft 5 has a pair of cylindrical externally threaded studs 8 extending from either end of the shaft 5, onto which studs 8 are screwed the springs 3 and 4. The shaft 5 comprises a one-piece moulding of any suitable flexible plastics material e.g. polyethylene and incorporates as shown an internal support spring 9 embedded in the shaft 5 during manufacture.
The springs 3 and 4 comprise close wound steel tension springs and attached to the front end of spring 3 which in use is to be the leading end of the tool is a nose guide 10 which may be any suitable shape, for instance pear-shaped as shown in the drawings. The guide 10 may be made of any suitable wearresistant material such as metal, glass or hard plastic.
Extending from the rear of the nose guide 10 is an externally threaded stud 11 onto which the spring 3 is screwed.
Attached to the rear end of the spring 4 is an externally threaded stud 12 onto which the spring 4 is screwed, a portion 13 of the stud 12 projecting beyond the end of the spring 4 for connection to a push rod or handle (not shown).
The tool described is particularly designed to block the bore of a fluid-carrying pipe such as a gas service pipe at a point upstream of a bend to permit the removal of a portion of the pipe downstream of the bend without the escape of the fluid from the pipe. The removed portion of pipe which may be defective can then be replaced with a new portion.
A typical operation is shown in Figures 2 and 3 where a gas service pipe 20 is being blocked, the pipe 20 comprising an upstream horizontal portion 21 connected at one end (not shown) to a feeder main (not shown) and a downstream vertical riser portion 22 connected to the portion 21 by an elbow 23.
In use a handle or push rod 24 is attached to the connecting stud 13 of the tool and a gland (not shown) is attached to the uppermost end (not shown) of the riser portion 22. This uppermost end may be located in a dwelling.
The tool is inserted through the gland into the riser portion 22 and the seal 2 is pushed around the elbow 23 into the upstream portion 21. By virtue of the material from which the seal shaft 5 is made and the presence of the internal spring 9 the seal 2 can be made flexible enough to negotiate the elbow 23 and pass into the pipe portion 21. The flanges are dimensioned to form a close fit with the internal wall of the portion 21 so that the bore is blocked to the flow of gas as shown in the drawings.
With the seal still in place, the handle or push-rod, gland, vertical riser and elbow can be removed as shown in Figure 3 to permit the old riser portion to be replaced as required. After replacement the tool can be removed.

Claims (10)

1. A tool for blocking a portion of a pipe upstream of a bend, the tool comprising an elongate member having means to form a seal with the bore of the pipe, the tool being adapted to negotiate the bend to locate the sealing means within the upstream portion of the pipe when the member is pushed along the pipe.
2. A tool as claimed in claim 1 in which the sealing means lies at a point between the ends of the member.
3. A tool as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the sealing means comprises at least one resilient annular flange extending from the axis of the member to form a close fit with the internal wall of the pipe.
4. A tool as claimed in claim 3 in which the sealing means comprises a resilient shaft from which the at least one flange extends.
5. A tool as claimed in claim 4 in which the shaft contains a spring.
6. A tool as claimed in claim 4 or claim 5 in which the member comprises a pair of coiled springs adjoining each end of the shaft.
7. A tool as claimed in any preceding claim in which the member has a forward end provided with means for guiding the member around the bend.
8. A tool as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the rear end of the member is provided with a stud to engage with a push rod or handle.
9. A tool as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the stud is threaded.
10. A tool substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings.
