Abstract

A method of operating a telephone system comprises calling a pager receiver 72 when an extension 41 is called, and establishing a communication path between the pager user 12 or 81 and the caller. The pager user may call a private branch exchange 31 (PBX) in response to the paging and may use a password. Subscriber absence from the extension may be registered. <IMAGE>

Description

22313 39 TELEPHONE CIRCTAT This invention relates to telephone circuits,
and is concerned particularly with a circuit and method for establishing a speech path between two office line subscribers or an office line subscriber and an extension subscriber by utilizing a private branch exchange (PBX).
Generally, in a known system as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, a private branch exchange 31 connects an extension subscriber 41 - 49 with a call from an office exchange 21 if an office subscriber 11 calls an extension subscriber 42, and enables two extension subscribers to talk to each other by connecting a call if any extension subscriber calls another extension subscriber. However this is not possible if the called extension subscriber is absent.
Preferred embodiments of this invention aim to provide a circuit and method of establishing a speech path between an absent extension subscriber and an office subscriber or other extension subscriber by utilizing a paging system and a private branch exchange.
Another aim is to provide a circuit and method of communication service similar to a mobile radio telecommunication service for establishing a speech path between two parties by use of an office line telephone and registering a pager receiver as an extension subscriber of a private branch 25 exchange.
In an embodiment of the present invention, a private branch exchange connected to a plurality of extension lines controls a speech communication of office or extension lines, and an office exchange connected to the private branch exchange controls a speech communication of office lines. An office pager transmission controller receiving a pager transmission signal, connected to the office exchange, makes a call to a pager receiver associated with an absent extension line. An absent subscriber service controller is disposed inside or outside of the private branch exchange, controls the office pager transmission controller to call the pager receiver through the private branch exchange and office exchange after checking the absence registration of a called extension line when a first office line subscriber calls the absent extension line, and controls the private branch exchange to establish a speech path between a second office line subscriber and the first office line subscriber when the second office line subscriber with the pager receiver calls the absent extension line.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an absent subscriber service circuit, comprising:
private branch exchange (PBX) means connected to a plurality of extension lines, for controlling communications between office and extension lines, or between extension lines; office exchange means connected to said private branch exchange (PBX) means, for controlling communications between office lines; office pager transmission controller means for receiving a pager transmission control signal through said office exchange means, thereby to make a call to a pager receiver associated with a called absent extension line; and absent subscriber service controller means for controlling said office pager transmission controller means to call said pager receiver through said private branch exchange (PBX) and office exchange means when said called extension line is set for absence, and for controlling said private branch exchange (PBX) means to establish a communication path between a calling party and the called party when said called party makes a call to said private branch exchange (PBX) means in response to the call made by said office pager transmission controller means.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of an absent subscriber service in an exchange system, comprising the steps of.
checking if a called extension line is set for absence, in response to a first incoming call signal from a calling office or extension line subscriber; if said called extension line is set for absence, calling a pager receiver associated with said called extension line while making said calling office or extension line subscriber stand by; and if a second incoming call together with a password is present on said called extension line, connecting a communication path between the stand- by calling subscriber and a present calling subscriber.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of an absent subscriber service in a private branch exchange (PBX) means operating in association with at least one pager receiver, the or each said pager receiver being registered as an extension line subscriber of said private branch exchange (PBX), said method comprising the steps of-, checking if said extension line subscriber is called by a first calling subscriber; if said extension line subscriber is called, calling said pager receiver associated with said called extension line subscriber while making said first calling subscriber stand by; and if said extension line subscriber is called by a second calling subscriber with said pager receiver, establishing a communication path between said first and second calling subscribers.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a telephone system comprising:
means for receiving from a caller a first incoming call for an extension line subscriber; means for transmitting a paging call to a user associated with the called extension line; means for receiving from said user a second incoming call; and means for connecting said caller with said user.
Such a system may further comprise any one or more of the features disclosed in the accompanying specification, claims, abstract and/or drawings, in any combination.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to Figures 2 to 6 of the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 2 is a block diagram of one example of an absent subscriber service circuit according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 3 is a block diagram of another example of an absent subscriber service circuit, according to another embodiment of the present invention; is Figure 4 is a flow chart of circuits as shown in Figures 2 and 3; Figure 5 is a block diagram of a further example of an absent subscriber service circuit, according to further embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 6 is a flow chart of a circuit as shown in Figure 5.
In the figures, like reference numerals denote like or corresponding parts.
With reference to Figure 2, a first office exchange 21 is connected with a first office line subscriber 11, and a third office exchange 23 is connected with a second office line subscriber 12. A pager receiver 72 is carried by an extension subscriber.
An office pager transmission controller 62 calls a corresponding pager receiver by radio on receiving a paging transmission signal, and a second office exchange 22 is connected with the office pager transmission controller 62.
A private branch exchange 31 is connected with a plurality of extension subscriber terminal equipments 41 to 49, and the first to third office exchanges 21 to 23, for controlling speech communication of the extension lines or the office lines.
An absent subscriber service controller 52 is installed in the inside or the outside of the private branch exchange 31 and registers an absence of any extension subscriber. The absent subscriber service controller 52 calls the pager receiver 72 of the absent subscriber by controlling the office pager transmission controller 62 through the private branch exchange 31 and the second office exchange 22 after checking the registration of absence of the extension subscriber when any office line subscriber calls the absent subscriber by use of the first office line telephone 11. Additionally, the absent subscriber service controller 52 establishes a speech path between the first office line telephone 11 and the second office line telephone 12, when the called absent subscriber having the pager 72 makes a call to the private branch exchange 31 through the third office exchange 23 by use of the second office line telephone 12 and transmits a given extension number of the called absent subscriber and password thereto.
In the modified circuit of Figure 3, the third office exchange 23 includes further a radio terminal equipment 81 such as a portable telephone, a car phone, a CT-2 or a CT-3, in addition to the second office line telephone 12 of Figure 2, and the radio terminal equipment 81 makes a call to the third office exchange 23 through a radio terminal controller 91. Likewise, the first office exchange 21 includes further a radio terminal controller 92 and a radio terminal equipment 82 in addition to the first office line telephone 11. In this case, the absent subscriber service controller 52 establishes a speech path regardless of general telephone or radio terminal equipment, under the same situation as mentioned above.
With reference to Figure 4, a method of an absent subscriber service includes the steps of. checking if an absence of a called extension line is registered after receiving an incoming call from a calling subscriber, for example an office line subscriber or an extension line subscriber; if the absence thereof is not registered, that is, the called extension line responds, establishing a speech path between the calling subscriber and the called extension line; if the absence of the called extension line is registered, checking if a call transfer is made for another extension line while making the calling subscriber stand by; if the call transfer is made for another extension line, establishing a speech path between the calling subscriber and the other called extension line; if the call transfer is not made for another extension line, generating a control signal for calling a pager receiver corresponding to the called extension line; and if another incoming call with password is present on the same called extension line, establishing a speech path between the stand by calling subscriber and a present calling subscriber.
With reference to the drawing attached, an incoming call from the first office line subscriber terminal is transmitted to a pager receiver 72 through the office pager transmission controller 62 in a state of hookoff or hook-on when an extension subscriber with a pager receiver 72 registers his absence to a mapping table of the absent subscriber service controller 52 through the private branch exchange 31 by use of his extension line telephone before departing from a location of the extension line telephone.
The private branch exchange 31 establishes a speech path between the first and second office line terminal equipments when the called subscriber sends a given extension number by use of an adjacent second office line terminal equipment, for example, a general telephone or a radio terminal such as HBP, car phone, or CT-2, according to an indication of the pager receiver 72.
With reference to Figures 3 and 4, an operation of a system is illustrated more specifically as follows.
Firstly, an extension subscriber with pager receiver 72 departs from his location after registering his absence to a mapping table of the absent subscriber service controller 52 through private branch exchange 31 by use of his extension line telephone.
When an office line subscriber 11 calls the extension subscriber through first office exchange 21 in step 4a, the absent subscriber service controller 52 checks a registration of absence in step 4b, and then if an absence is not registered, a speech path is established by responding from the called extension subscriber.
But if absence is registered, the step 4e checks if a call transfer is made for another extension line, and then if the call transfer is made for another extension line, the absent subscriber service controller 52 establishes a speech path between the calling office line subscriber 11 and another called extension line by controlling the private branch exchange 31 in a state of call transfer, in steps 4i and 4j.
Without a state of call transfer, the absent subscriber service controller 52 controls the private branch exchange 31 for transmitting a call signal to the pager receiver 72 of the extension line subscriber by radio through the second office exchange 22 and the office pager transmission controller 62, in step 4f.
When the extension subscriber with a registration of absence sends his extension line number and password through an adjacent radio terminal 81 or an office line subscriber telephone 12 after receiving a radio call, in step 4g, the private branch exchange 31 establishes a speech path between the calling office subscriber 11 and the absent extension subscriber registered as the absentee-in step 4h. In this case, the password-for example, 'T' Or "" key, may be used to indicate the fact that a present incoming call is made by the called absent extension subscriber with the pager receiver 72 through the radio terminal or the office line subscriber telephone. By releasing the registration of absence, the extension line subscriber is able to communicate through his extension line telephone.
As shown in Figure 5, a private branch exchange 31 connects a call between two office exchanges by means of registering pager receivers as its extension line subscribers.
The above system configuration includes all components of Figure 3, except for an absent subscriber service controller 52 and extension line telephones 41 to 49.. Thus the system is operated as if all extension line subscribers are registered as the absent subscribers at -all times. Accordingly the private branch exchange 31 performs merely a switching operation between the office exchanges in this case, and provides a service similar to that of a mobile radio service by utilizing a pager system.
With reference to Figure 5 and 6, an operation principle is illustrated as follows.
Assuming that pager receiver 72 is registered as an extension line subscriber of private branch exchange 31, a signal for calling the pager receiver 72 from an office line telephone 12 or a radio telephone 81 is applied to the private branch exchange 31 in step 6a, and then the private branch exchange 31 controls pager controller 62 through office exchange 22 in order to call the pager receiver 72 in step 6b. The pager receiver 72 sends the users extension line number by use,of another office line telephone 11 or a radio telephone 82, in response to an incoming call from the office line 12 or the radio terminal equipment 81, in step 6c, and then the private branch exchange 31 establishes a speech path between the calling party and the called party in step 6d.
By utilizing this function, it is possible to establish a speech path between exclusive transmission terminal equipments such as a public telephone or CT-2.
As stated above, there is provided an advantage that a speech path is rapidly established between a called absent extension subscriber and a calling office subscriber by recognizing a call of the absent extension line through a pager receiver associated with the called extension line registered as absence, 5 and by making a call to the called absent extension line.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that modifications in detail may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Claims (7)

CLAINIS
1. An absent subscriber service circuit, comprising:
private branch exchange (PBX) means connected to a plurality of extension lines, for controlling communications between office and extension lines, or between extension lines; office exchange means connected to said private branch exchange (PBX) means, for controlling communications between office lines; office pager transmission controller means for receiving a pager transmission control signal through said office exchange means, thereby to make a call to a pager receiver associated with a called absent extension line; and absent subscriber service controller means for controlling said office pager transmission controller means to call said pager receiver through said private branch exchange (PBX) and office exchange means when said called extension line is set for absence, and for controlling said private branch exchange (PBX) means to establish a communication path between a calling party and the called party when said called party makes a call to said private branch exchange (PBX) means in response to the call made by said office pager transmission controller means.
2. A method of an absent subscriber service in an exchange system, comprising the steps of.
-14checking if a called extension line is set for absence, in response to a first incoming call signal from a calling office or extension line subscriber; if said called extension line is set for absence, calling a pager receiver associated with said called extension line while making said calling office or extension line subscriber stand by; and if a second incoming call together with a password is present on said called extension line, connecting a communication path between the stand- by calling subscriber and a present calling subscriber.
3. A method of an absent subscriber service in a private branch exchange (PBX) means operating in association with at least one pager receiver, the or each said pager receiver being registered as an extension line subscriber of said private branch exchange (PBX), said method comprising the steps of- checking if said extension line subscriber is called by a first calling subscriber; if said extension line subscriber is called, calling said pager receiver associated with said called extension. line subscriber while making said first calling subscriber stand by; and if said extension line subscriber is called by a second calling subscriber with said pager receiver, establishing a communication path between said first and second calling subscribers.
4. A telephone system comprising:
-is- means for receiving from a caller a first incoming call for an extension line subscriber; means for transmitting a paging call to a user associated with the called 5 extension line; means for receiving from said user a second incoming call; and means for connecting said caller with said user.
5. A system according to claim 4, further comprising any one or more of the features disclosed in the accompanying specification, claims, abstract and/or drawings, in any combination.
6. A telephone system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 2, 3 or 5 of the accompanying drawings.
7. A method of operating a telephone system, the method being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 4 or 6 of the 20 accompanying drawings.
