Abstract

A method of securing to a plastics body, specifically for the securement together of two plastics planks (10, 20), involves the use of a nail (14) or staple (24) having apertures (16), the nail (14) being inserted through the plastics planks in the direction of the arrow A by the application of an ultrasonic vibrating device, the securing element vibrating at ultrasonic frequency and locally melting the plastics of the plank as it passes into its inserted position, plastics material flowing into the apertures (16) reducing tendency for the plate to subsequently move relative to the two plastics bodies. In a second embodiment, the staple (24) comprises two spaced legs, (24a, 24b), connected together by a domed bridge portion (28) to be engaged by the curved ultrasonic vibrating horn (34). The nail or staple may be provided with a ring or eye to which an article such as a structural component may be secured, or the nail or staple may pass through an aperture in the component. <IMAGE>
