Description
Pivot Window Restrictors
This invention relates to pivot window restrictors for windows having pivots of the kind comprising two stays interconnecting the sash to the frame to permit access to both sides of the glazing from one side of the mounting wall.
According to the present invention, the stays are.
pivoted to a mounting member for attachment to one of the frame and the sash, one of the stays carries an engagement member, and a retainer member is mounted on but for relative movement to the mounting member, engagement of the engagement member with the retainer member in a window-closing direction moving tho retainer member to a position in which the engagement member is trapped by the retainer member to prevent opening of the window beyond a predetermined amount without manual release of the retainer member.
Various restrictors have been provided for centre-pivoted and edge pivoted windows but these comprise separate components, namely a pin and a retainer member, which require separate attachment to the sash and frame. By means of the present invention, the components of the restrictor do not require to be attached individually but are fixed in position by the act of attaching the pivot. Not only are the separate attaching operations eliminated but there is also eliminated the precise locating required with separate pins and retainers if they are to cooperate properly with one another.
It is preferred for the engagement member to be in the form of a pin and for the retainer member to have n jaw, one side of which constitutes a camming member for engagement by the engagement member to effect the said movement and the other side of which constitutes a block to resist opening of the window beyond the predetermined amount. In one possible construction, the retainer member is mounted for sliding translational movement while in another it is mounted for pivotal movement.
The invention may be carried into practice in various ways but two constructions of friction hinge incorporating window restrictors and constructed irl accordance with the present invention will now he described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which::
Figure 1 shows the first construction of friction hinge mounting a sash on a frame, only parts of the sash and frame being shown and with the sash in the fully open position;
Figure 2 shows the same construction with the saQll in the nearly closed position;
Figure 3 shows the same construction with the sasl in the fully closed position;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 of the second construction of friction pivot before the sash is connected and the pivot is mounted on the frame and with one of the stays omitted;
Figure 5 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 2 showing the second construction with the stay in a position in which the sash would be nearly closed; and
Figure 6 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 3 but showing the stay in the position in which the sasl would be fully closed;
Figure 7 is a view to a larger scale of the retainer member of the friction pivot shown in Figures 3 to 6; and
Figure 8 is a section on the line VIII-VTII in
Figure 7.
Reference will now be made to Figures 1, 2 and 3 and particularly to Figure 1. This shows part of a window frame 1 and part of a window sash 2 intended to close the openings surrounded by the frame 1. The sasel is side-hung, i.e. it pivots about a virtual vertical axis so that the drawings may be thought of as plan views. The sash is pivoted to the frame by means of a pair of friction pivot constructions only the lower on being described. The pivot essentially comprises a first mounting member 3 attached to the frame 1, a second mounting member 4 attached to the sash 2, a first or long stay or link 5 and a second or short stay or link 6, the stays being pivoted at their opposite ends to the sash mounting member 4 and the frame mounting member 3 respectively.
The long stay 5 has on one side intermediate it length a lug 7 which carries a pin 8 constituting all engagement member. A retainer member 9 is slidable Ol the frame mounting member 3 and essentially comprises a flat plate having a pair of slots 11 through which pass the stems of a pair of headed studs 12 which are fixed to the mounting member 3. The upper end (as seen iii Figures 1 to 3) of the retainer member 9 is formed as a jaw, the right hand side 13 of which constitutes a camming member and which has a lower surface 14 which is inclined to the length of the mounting member 3 at approximately 450 for a purpose which will be described.The other side of the jaw is formed wit first surface 15 which is perpendicular to the length of the mounting member 3 and a return portioii 16 having a surface 17 which extends parallel with the length of the mounting member 3.
Operation of the friction pivot or hinge will now be described with reference to Figure 1 to 3. To move from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure 3 the outer or left hand end of the sash is swung downwards as seen in the Figures while the inner or right hand end of the sash swings upwards as seen in the Figures, the short stay 6 rotating in a clockwise direction through something approaching 1200 while the long stay 5 also rotates in a clockwise direction but through approximately 350 until the position is reached where the pin 8 reaches tile position indicated by 18 and engages the surface 14 Ol the side 13 of the retainer member 9.As the sasio continues to move towards the fully closed position the pin 8 moving to the right cams the surface 14 and with it the whole of the retainer member 9 upwards until the position shown in Figure 3 is reached. In this position the window is completely closed and the retainer plate 9 is in one of its end positionsin which position it is retained by friction. If the window is now to be opened it is free to move from tie position shown in Figure 3 to the position shown in Figure 2 but when this position is reached the pin 8 will engage against the surface 17 on the return 16 of the retainer member 9 and further movement of the sash outwardly will be prevented. If additional opening of the window is required, for example to the position shown in
Figure 1, the retainer member 9 may be moved manual to its other end position to free the pin 8 from the return 16.
Turning now to the second construction shown in
Figures 4, 5 and 6, the structure of the hinge is the same as that shown in Figure 1 and only in the retainer member is there any difference and like parts will be given the same reference numerals with the addition of a", In this construction the retainer member 9a iF, approximately sector shaped and is mounted for rotation about a pivot pin 25 between end positions determined by an arcuate slot 26 through which passes a headed stud 27 fastened to the mounting member 3a. The lower edge of the retainer member 9a (as seen in the drawings) is formed as an open shallow jaw 15a one side 13a of which is engaged as the window closes and the other side 16a of which acts to trap the pin 8a once the window is closed.Thus in operation and startii from the position shown in Figure 6 in which the window is completely closed, movement of the window towards the fully open position will reach the situation scion in Figure 5 in which the pin 8a engages the side 36a of the jaw 15a to prevent further opening of the window.
If further opening is required the retainer member 9a may be manually pivoted about the pivot pin 25 to the release position shown in Figure 4 thus freeing the pin 8a and the window can then be opened. Again tlle retainer member 9a is retained in the position to which it is moved at any time by friction means.If, white the window is open, the retainer member 9a should move from the open-window condition shown in Figure 4 to the closed-window position shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, the pin 8a will, when the sash is subsequently moved towards the closed position, engage the nose 28 of the retainer member 9a which is shaped to be cammed by further movement of the pin 8a to rotate the retainer member 9a to the open-window position to allow te pin to pass into the jaw 15a.
It can be seen from Figures 7 and 8 that the retainer member 9a is formed with a taper 29 along it edge which is directed towards the sash as the sash moves towards the closed position. This is provided to lift the sash to its final position by the lower edge of the sash riding up the taper and on to the top of the retainer member 9a as the sash closes. Tulle arrangement may be such that this lifting occurs even when the hinge is new but the hinge will normally be designed so that the taper will come into operation only after the hinge has been in operation for som > time and some wear or distortion has occurred.
Although the invention has been described in relation to a side-hung arrangement it will he appreciated that it may also be applied to top-hung and bottom-hung arrangements.
