Abstract

A device for reading and evaluation of static or dynamic encoded information consisting of a device capable of reading information not decipherable by the naked eye or existing methods of detection. An electro magnetic radiation source 1 is arranged to interrogate the subject matter to be examined onto the receiver/detector for verifying the presence, correctness of absence of information or signals H encoded in the subject, which subject may be a passport, seal, credit card, cheque, currency, negotiable security 13, and which signals may be used to validate all such items as well as other valuable documents, airline and other tickets. The validating or verifying signals are incorporated inconspicuously within the subject and their characteristics presented on a detector/receiver to an operator or by other means without the intervention of an operator as for instance opening a lock or door, dispensing cash or starting a machine/process. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVED DEVICE FOR READING AND EVALUATING ENCODED INFORMATION This invention relates to an improved device for reading and evaluating encoded information.
The requirements of modern commerce have made the multiplication and diversity of control methods such as cards for the operation of cash dispensers, door and safe locks, authentication of passports and air travel tickets and other purposes described below.
This multiplication of such control devices has itself given rise to ever-increasing forgery of them and the object of the present invention is to provide a method of monitoring the monitors to evaluate them and determine their authenticity or otherwise.
According to the present invention there is provided a reader capable of reading and evaluating encoded information (as for instance in a hologram) which is exemplified in the accompanying drawing which shows an initial prototype apparatus in the form of a machine reader for checking the presence of security encoded information in a hologram H provided on a carrier 13 which carrier for example could be in the form of a credit card. The machine reader comprises a housing 5 enclosing a low power laser 1 (several milliwatts) powered by power supply 7. The machine reader is powered from a battery or the mains (the laser 1 could be replaced by any monochromatic light source). Placed over the hologram the encoded information is arranged in the beam path B of the laser 1 and supports the carrier 13 in such manner that the laser beam B is directed at the hologram H which can only be inserted into the machine reader in a preset position already correctly aligned with the laser beam. Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A device for reading and evaluating encoded information in which an electro magnetic radiation source is arranged to interrogate the subject matter for verifying the presence, correctness or absence of information or signals encoded in the subject and which signals may be used to validate items including passports, seals, credit cards, cheques, currency, negotiable securities as well as other valuable documents, the validating signals being incorporated in the subject and when presented on a detector/receiver to an operator or by other means effect opening a lock or door, dispensing cash or starting other processes.
  2. 2. A device for reading information holographically encoded.
  3. 3. A portable device for reading and evaluating encoded information independently powered.
  4. 4. A device capable of acting on holographically processed information for purposes disclosed in claim number 1 and other purposes.
