Abstract
An angle divider is a tool designed to automatically divide any given angle, ideal for use in mitering. It works by placing the tool on or inside the known angle with both movable arms 7 running parallel along either side of that angle. Because the arms have an intermeshing gear mechanism at one end pivoting in a main body 9 the movement of each arm is dependent on the other and so keeping the main body central to both arms. A detachable dividing arm 6 is located on the main body, the angle between it and either movable arm will be exactly half that of the overall angle. <IMAGE>
Description
ANGLE DIVIDER
This invention relates to an angle divider.
The object of an angle divider is to enable a quick, easy and accurate division of any given angle for the purpose of mitering two or more pieces of wood ect.
Set squares have been in use for many years but as their name suggests the angle on the tool is set and cannot be altered, the most common angles used are 900 and 450.This makes the tool very limited in it's use.
Also available are adjustable protractors, but they will only give the overall angle which then has to be divided to give the correct angle for mitering.
According to the present invention there is provided an angle divider comprising of two movable arms, both geared at one end:a main body to house the geared ends of the arms, and a detachable dividing arm that locates into the main body, and to enable the tool to be used in a restricted area a small angle transfer tool is provided, consisting of two arms pivoted at one end.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 Depicts the angle divider fully closed.
Figure 2 Shows the angle divider open.
Figure 3 Shows the small angle transfer tool.
Figure 4 Shows the 900 dividing arm.
Figure 5 Illustrates the small angle transfer in use.
Figure 6 Illustrates the arms open for an outside angle.
Figure 7 Illustrates the tool in use on an inside angle.
Figure 8 Shows the dividing arm in position.
Figure 9 Illustrates the gear mechanism.
Refering to the drawing, the angle divider comprises two movable arms 7 both having a gear mechanism 8 at one end that intermesh with each other.
A main body 9 to house the gear section of the arms, and also provide a location point 10 to facilitate the fitting and removal of the angle dividing arm 6. These location points are also situated on the movable arms at the opposite ends to that of the gear mechanism. For use on angles that are shallower in depth than the length of the arms a small angle transfer tool 5 is provided, consisting of two arms pivoted at one end and to work in conjunction with this tool on very accute angles ridges 11 are provided.
To find the correct angle for a miter, the angle divider is placed inside or onto the known overall angle as shown in Figs 6 and 7.The arms 7 are then positioned so they run parallel along either side of that angle.
The dividing arm 6 as shown in Fig 4 can now be inserted into the main body 9 as in Fig 8,effectually spliting the angle, the assembled tool can now be placed (as shown)with one of the angle arms alongside the item to be cut,and where the dividing arm crosses it marked, thus giving an exact half of the overall angle.
Claims (11)
1 An angle divider has two movable arms, both geared at one end and so designed to intermesh with each other:a dividing arm which is detachable and a main body that houses the geared section of the movable arms, also providing a facility to removably attach the dividing arm.
2 An angle divider as claimed in claim one, wherein the dividing arm can be replaced by one especially designed to be used in conjunction with an adjustable miter table, enabling the angle on the aforsaid table to be set with the aid of the angle divider.
3 An angle divider as claimed in claim one wherein means are provided to ascertain angles which are shallow in depth and transfer them onto the the angle divider .i.e.a small protractor assembly as illustrated in Fig 3
4 An angle divider as claimed in claim one wherein means are provided to lock one or both movable arms.i.e. a bolt to replace the pivot pin on the movable arms with a wing nut to tighten it (not illustrated).
5 An angle divider as claimed in claim one wherein provision is made to removably attach the dividing arm to either of the angle arms so as to produce a ridged preset angle.
6 An angle divider as claimed in claim one wherein the dividing arm can be replaced by one of a different preset angle to produce a smaller cutting angle for the purpose of mitering more than just two pieces into a given overall angle ( not illustrated ).
7 An angle divider as claimed in all preceding claims wherein provision is made to lock the dividing arm in position on either the angle arms or the main body whichever it is being used on at the time ( not illustrated)
8 An angle divider as claimed in claim one and claim three wherein provision is made to fit a small angle transfer tool onto the movable arms for the purpose of ascertaining very accute angles.( shown in drawings as small ridges 11 ).
9 An angle divider as claimed in claim one whereupon gradient markings are put on the dividing arm to indicate degrees of angle (as illustrated in figures 4 and 8) enabling the tool to be used as a protractor.
10 An angle divider as claimed in claim one and claim five wherein accessaries may be fitted in place of the dividing arm.i.e. a spirit level.
11 An angle divider substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 - 9 of the accompanying drawings.
