Abstract
A catamaran 1 is provided with a bow-facing arrangement of rowing oars 2, 3, each oar being shaped so that, in use, pulling forces 4, 5, applied to the oars results in the application of forward propulsive forces 6, 7 to the craft, the forward direction being that which the oarsman is facing. The oars 2, 3 are mounted in rowlocks 20, 21 and can move relative thereto. The rowlocks 20, 21 can move relative to hulls 10, 11 about substantially vertical axes. The looms/shafts 24, 25 of the oars comprise metal tubes of convoluted form shaped so as to obtain forwardly-acting propulsive thrust force by backward pulling movements. The shaft and loom portions are twisted so that the handles 30, 31 of the oars lie in substantially vertical planes which are substantially parallel to the planes containing the oar blades 32, 33. The paths taken by the oar blades 32, 33 are indicated by the dotted lines 34, 35. <IMAGE>
Description
"Improvements in or relating to Water-Craft"
This invention relates to water-craft and is also concerned with rowing oars therefor.
According to one aspect of the invention, a water-craft is provided with a pair of rowing oars, each oar being shaped so that in use, a pulling force applied to the oar results in the application of a forward propulsive force to the craft, the forward direction being that which the oarsman is facing.
The water-craft may be of multi-hulled form, and may then comprise a catamaran
The water-craft may be of model form.
Another aspect of the invention comprises an oar per se.
The various aspects of the Invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accarrpanying drawings, wherein :
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a catamaran form of water craft, Figure 2 is a stern-end view of the craft,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the craft, and
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the craft.
With reference to the figures, a catamaran form of water-craft 1 is provided with a pair of rowing oars 2, 3, each oar being shaped so that in use, pulling forces 4, 5, (Figure 3), applied to the oars results in the application of forward propulsive forces 6, 7 to the craft, the forward direction being that which the oarsman is facing.
The water-craft 1 comprises a pair of laterally-spaced hulls 10, 11 interconnected by a flat board 12 which also serves as a support for a seat 13 comprising a back 14 and a footrest 15 mounted on a board 16. The longitudinal axis 17 of the board 12 is inclined at a substantial angle to the longitudinal axis 18 of the water-craft 1.
The oars 2, 3 are mounted in rowlocks 20, 21 and can move relative thereto. The rowlocks 20, 21 can move relative to hulls 10, 11, about substantially vertical axes 22, 23 (Figure 1).
The oars 2, 3, are of similar form. The locms/shafts 24, 25 of the oars comprise metal tubes of convoluted form, see particularly Figures 3 and 4, shaped so as to obtain forwardlyacting propulsive thrust force by backward pulling movements. It will be noted that the shaft and loan portions are twisted so that the handles 30, 31 of the oars lie in substantially vertical planes which are substantially parallel to the planes containing the oar blades 32, 33.
In operation, a person sitting on the seat 13 with his feet on the footrest 15 pulls on the oars 2, 3, so that the leading blade 33 is dragged backwards through the water and the trailing blade 32 is pushed rearwardly through the water. These actions, which are accarmodated by movement within and by the rowlocks 20, 21, result in the application of the propulsive forces 6, 7 to the craft 1, so that the craft is displaced forwardly, in the direction in which the person on the seat 13 is looking, which is obviously advantageous.
The oars 2, 3 are then lifted out of the water, pushing forces opposite to forces 4, 5, are applied to the oars, and the oar blades dipped in the water to repeat the operation.
The paths taken by the oar blades 32, 33 are indicated by the dotted lines 34, 35. (Figure 3).
A water-craft according to the invention may be used as a pleasure boat, or it may be used, for example, as. a tender. It will be noted that the oar blades of the water-craft 1 are inbrd of the hulls 10, 11, and therefore do not hinder positioning of the craft alongside a boat or a jetty.
A small, model-sized version of the water-craft may be produced, using a mechanical and/or electrical actuator to operate the oars.
Such a craft may be radio-controlled.
Single hull, or triple hull forms of the invention may be produced.
