Abstract

A clamping device comprises a collar (1) which is adapted, in use, to be fastened around a gas bottle to be secured and clamping means (3) comprising opposed jaws, whereby the clamping device can be clamped to a fixture. <IMAGE>

Description

A CLAMPING DEVICE The present invention relates to a clamping device, and more specifically, to a clamping device for securing a gas bottle to scaffolding, railings or the like. The clamping device of the present invention is particularly intended for use on board oil rigs and the like to secure the gas bottles of an oxyacetylene torch to the rig frame work.
According to the present invention there is provided a clamping device comprising a collar which is adapted, ifl use, to be fastened around a gas bottle to be secured and clamping means whereby the clamping device can be clamped to a fixture.
Preferably, the collar comprises a plurality of arcuate members which are hinged together such as to define a ring which can be opened and closed at a point in its circumference to receive a gas bottle and means for releasably securing together the two free ends of the said plurality of arcuate members.
The diameter of the ring defined by the said plurality of arcuate members is such that when the ring is closed and secured it forms a tight fit around the body of the gas bottle to be secured.
Conveniently, the releasable securing means comprises a mutually engageable hasp and staple, each of which is carried by a respective one of the two free ends of the said plurality of arcuate members. A hole is provided in the staple to receive a padlock so that the hasp and staple can be locked together.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the clamping means comprises at least one finger shaped clamping member, positioned opposite at least two finger shaped clamping members and screw means for moving the said at least one finger shaped clamping member relative to the said at least two finger shaped clamping members.
The finger shaped clamping members are ideally suited for gripping a rallying or a scaffolding pipe.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a clamping and securing device embodying the present invention; and Fig. 2 shows a partial schemmatlc view of a scaffolding rail to which two gas bottles are secured by means of clamping and securing devices as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings there is shown a clamping device comprising a collar 1 connected via a relatively short tubular shaft to a clamp 3. The collar 1 is circular in shape and is comprised of a semi-circular arcuate member 4 and two further arcuate members, 5 and 6 each of which is hinged to a respective free end of the semi-circular arcuate member 4 and can be pivoted relative thereto to open and close the collar 1. The arcuate member 5 carries at its free end a hasp 7 and the arcuate member 6 carries at its free end a staple 8. The hasp 7 and the staple 8 are mutually engageable to fasten the free ends of the arcuate members 5 and 6 together when the collar is closed. A hole 9 is provided in the staple 8 to receive a padlock (not shown) so that the collar 1 can be locked closed.
As shown in Fig. 2, the diameter of the collar 1 is such that it can be tightly fastened around the body of a gas bottle 20.
Referring again to Fig. 1, the clamp 3 comprises a first plate member 10 which is fixed to the shaft 2 and a second plate member 11 which is held in position opposite the first member 11 by a pair of locating pins 12 and a screw threaded rod 13. The pins 12 are connected to the second member 11 and extend through holes In the first member 10, and the screw threaded rod 17 is connected to the flrst member 10 and extends through a hole in the second member 11. A spring 14 is provided on the rod 13 between the members 10 and 11 to keep them biased apart and a butterfly nut 15 on the rod 13 allows the members 10 and 11 to be thightened together.
The fixed member 10 carries a single finger shaped clamping member 16, and the free moving member 11 carries two finger shaped clamping members 17 and 18. All three fingers 16, 17 and 18 are bent to form a substantially V-shaped profile so that when the clamp 3 is tightened onto a pipe 21, as shown in Fig. 2, a tight grip is ensured.
The clamping device of the present invention is particularly suitable for securing gas bottles on board oil rigs. After these gas bottles, which may be used in an oxyacetylene torch, for example, are simply propped against a wall whilst in use. Should they then pulled over as the user moves the connecting hose about the neck of the bottle can become damaged and escaping gas may turn the bottle into a lethal flying projectile.
The clamping device is simple and convenient to use, it being an easy matter to secure the collar around a bottle and then clamp the arrangement to a fixed part of the rig.

Claims (6)
