Abstract

In an apparatus for opening fibre bales, fibre is removed from the bale from above by a take-off device (3) that is movable along the fibre bale and there is a suction device (8) arranged above, and movable with, the take-off device (3), the suction device (8) being connected to a source of suction (100) by means of a flexible hose (9). The apparatus enables fibre flocks to be removed from fibre bales having a small overall height. <IMAGE>

Description

Apparatus for opening fibre bales The invention relates to an apparatus for opening fibre bales, for example of cotton, man-made fibres and the like.
In such a known apparatus, having a support device, and in which the fibre bales are worked off from above by a take-off device that is movable along the fibre bales, the support device for the fibre bales is in the form of a box that comprises end walls and side walls and is open at the top. The fibre bales are carried on a platform which is arranged inside the end and side walls and which, together with the fibre bales, is displaceable in the vertical direction during operation by means of a raising and lowering device.
In the known apparatus, the raising and lowering device is arranged beneath the platform and, as a result of the overall height of the raising and lowering device, the platform carrying the fibre bales cannot be arranged close to the ground or floor.
In contrast, the problem on which the invention is based is to provide an apparatus for opening fibre bales which avoids or mitigates the disadvantages mentioned and, especially, enables the apparatus to have a small overall height and allows the fibre bales to be arranged in single nanner beneath the take-off device.
According to the invention there is raided apparatus for opening a fibre bale in .hitch fibre is removed from the fibre bales from above by a take-off device that is movable along the fibre bales, in which the apparatus includes a support device that has a platform on which a fibre bale is carried and which is displaceable in the vertical direction during operation by means of a raising and lowering device, wherein the raising and lowering device is arranged outside the vertically projected area of the platform and coupling means is provided coupling the platform to the raising and lowering device.
The present invention also provides an apparatus for opening fibre bales of cotton, man-made fibres and the like, having a support device, in which the fibre bales are worked off from above by a cutting device that is movable along the fibre bales, in which the support device for the fibre bales is in the form of a box that comprises end walls and side walls and is open at the top, and in which the fibre bales are carried on a platform (base) which is arranged inside the end and side walls and which, together with the fibre bales, is displaceable in the vertical direction during operation by means of a raising and lowering device, characterised in that the raising and lowering device is arranged opposite the outer surfaces of the support walls and in that carrier members are provided between the platform and the raising and lowering device.
The arrangement of the raising and lowering device outside the support device leaves the space beneath the platform free, so that the platform can be arranged close to the ground or floor and, as a result, the overall height of the apparatus is reduced. The carrier members, for example bars, rods or the like, provide the connection between the platform and the raising and lowering device.
Advantageously, the platform and the support walls form a container. At least one support wall of the container is advantageously removable, for example hinged. The container is preferably movable by means of moving elements, for example rollers or wheels. The carrier members advantageously project through vertical slots in the support walls. The raising and lowering device advantageously has a vertical flexible transport element, for example a cnain or the like, for the carrier members, and also guide rollers. A guide roller is advantageously connected to a drive device. The car with the cutting device preferably runs on rails or the like which span at least two containers. Advantageously, the rails are fastened to pillars. The raising and lowering device is advantageously arranged in or on the pillars.
There is advantageously provided a horizontal transport device, for example a chain with carrier members, which transports the containers. Between the carrier members associated with the platform and the carrier members associated with the raising and lowering device there may be a coupling or the like. The carrier members associated with the platform may rest on the carrier members associated with the raising and lowering device.
The raising and lowering device advantageously has a control device which is connected to the control device for the car by way of a common control device. The transport device for the containers (container feed) advantageously has a control device which is connected to to the control device for the car and for the raising and lowering device by way of a common control device. It may also be advantageous for the drive devices for the container transport device, for the car with the cutting device and for the raising and lowering device to be connected to a common control device, for example a microcomputer.
A bale opener according to the invention can be simple, operate automatically and can be used for a small number of bales. The take-off device (cutting device) may have an opener roller and a fixed grid and advantageously runs on elevated rails. The detached fibre flocks may be sucked off by way of a flexible hose. This may be effected without difficulty especially where there is a small number of bales. For lateral displacement after each pass, the cutting unit (cutting roller and/or grid) can be moved to and fro relative to the car body, or the rails can be moved sideways by the required distance. The fibre bales are preferably moved in a container beneath the cutting device. The container is fixed there by means of a fixing device. The container may have a loose base (platform) which can be raised by means of the raising and lowering device.In this manner the bales are advanced (vertical feed) each time the car with the cutting device has travelled across. The fibre bales project in use beyond the container walls so that the cutting device is able to travel over the walls. The container preferably has hinged walls so that it can be loaded easily. It may be advantageous to exchange an empty platform (base) for a ready-prepared platform that is loaded with bales. At the beginning of each workingoff operation, the container platform would be attached to the stationary raising and lowering device, which is connected to the machine control system. The apparatus may have a machine control system that coordinates all drives and operating movements. In order to enable material to be exchanged rapidly, it impossible for the rails to extend over two working-off stations so that, during working off in the first station, the container in the second station can be exchanged and a reserve thus made available.
The present invention also provides a method of removing fibre material from a bale using an apparatus as defined above.
Certain illustrative embodiments of the invention are described in greater detail below with reference to the diagrammatic drawings, of which: Fig. 1 is a side vie of an apparatus embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a cutting device similar to that shown in Fig. 1, and having rails supported on pillars and a device for sucking off flocks, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a bale container, a raising and lowering device and a fastening between those parts, all of which are suitable for use with the apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2, Fig. 4 shows a raising and lowering device and a platform, each having carrier members which are not fastened together, all of which are suitable for use with the apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 5 shows a transport device with chain and carrier bars for transporting containers.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a frame consisting of four pillars la to ld (only pillars la and lb being visible in Fig. 1), which carry at their upper ends two parallel rails 2a and 2b. A car 3 runs on the rails 2a, 2b by means of wheels 4a to 4d (only wheels 4a and 4b being visible in Fig. 1), which car has a high-speed cutting (opener) roller 5, a grid 6 and support rollers 7a, 7b.
The direction of movement of the car 3 is shown by the arrows A, B, and the direction of rotation of the cutting roller 5 is indicated by the curved arrow C. Above the cutting roller 5 there is arranged a suction device 8 which has a flexible hose 3 and is connected to a suction source 100 (see Fig. 2). Fibre bales 10 are arranged in a container 11 (a box open at the top) which has two side walls 12a, 12b, two end walls 13a, 13b and a movable base which serves as the platform 14 for the fibre bales 10.
While the side walls 12a, 12b (see Fig. 3) and the end walls 13a, 13b are stationary during operation, the position of the platform 14 inside the box can be altered in the vertical direction (see arrows E, D), i.e. the platform 14 is displaceable. The container 11 has four wheels 15a, 15b, 15c and 15d (wheels 15c, 15d are not shown), so that the container 11 is movable.
Referring now also to Fig. 3, outside the container 11, opposite the outside walls of the support surfaces 12a, 12b; 13a, 13b, there is a raising and lowering device 16 which consists of two parts 16a, 16b. Each part 16a, 16b has four guide rollers 17a to 17d which guide and move two vertically arranged chains 18a, 18b, 18c and 18d (see arrows F, G). The guide rollers 17a, 17d are connected by means of a shaft l9a and the guide rollers 17b, 17c are connected by means of a shaft 19b.
Part 16b of the raising and lowering device 16 is of corresponding construction. The deflection roller 17a is driven by a drive motor 20. The chains 18a to 18d are provided with carrier members 21a to 21d, for example rods, bars or the like. On the end sides 14a, 14b of the platform 14 there are arranged carrier members 22a to 22d which are releasably connected to the carrier members 21a to 21d by means of a coupling 23a to 23d. In the end walls 13a, 13b of the container 11 there are vertical slots 24a to 24d through which the carrier members 22a to 22d project. It will be understood that in some instances not all of the parts referenced "a" to "d" are visible in the drawings but that substantially the same arrangement is provided at each vertical edge of the container 11.
In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 4, the chain 18a is connected to the chain 18c by means of a carrier member 25a, for example a rod, and the chain 18b is connected to the chain 18d by means of a carrier member 25b. Arranged on the lateral end faces 14c and 14d of the platform 14 are carrier members 26a, 26b and 26c, 26d, respectively, which rest on the carrier members 25a and 25b, respectively.
Fig. 5 shows four containers lla to lld arranged in a row one behind the other. The car 3 with the cutting device 5 travels to and fro above the containers lla and llb. The direction of travel of the containers lla to llb is designated H. Beneath each of the containers lla to lld there is a stop 27a to 27d (or a recess), which stops engage with four carrier bars 28a to 28d.
The angled carrier bars 28a to 28d are attached to a continuous chain 29 which passes round guide rollers 30a, 30b. The drive motor 31 for the car 3, the drive motor 20 for the raising and lowering device 16, and the drive motor 32 for the guide roller 30a of the container transport device are connected to a common control device 33, for example a microcomputer. In Fig. 5, the raising and lowering devices 16 (chains with guide rollers) are arranged inside the pillars la to ld. After a container has been positioned within the pillars la to ld, the carrier members on the raising and lowering devices 16 are coupled to the carrier members of the platform of that container so that the bale can be raised into engagement with the take-off device of the car 3. Once the fibre removal from the bale in that container is complete the container is uncoupled and the next container moved into its position and coupled to the devices 16.

Claims (5)

Claims
1. Apparatus for opening a fibre bale in which fibre is removed from the fibre bale from above by a take-off device that is movable along the fibre bale, in which the fibre bale is mounted on a support and in which there is a suction device arranged above, and movable with, the take-off device, the suction device being connected to a source of suction, wherein, between the suction device and the source of suction, there is a flexible hose that is connected at one end to the movable suction device and at its other end to the source of suction.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, in which the end of the flexible hose is attached to the movable car.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which one end of the flexible hose is attached to the suction device above the movable cutting device.
4. Apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the source of suction is arranged laterally of the rails.
5. An apparatus for opening a fibre bale, the apparatus being substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
