Description
CONVEYOR
This invention relates to conveyors particularly to conveyors for carrying material 5 U ch as uncured rubber compound.
Conveyors used for carrying materials of this tpe which are flexible and tack require a combination of properties including a fully supporting load bearing surface and a surface to which the material does not adhere too readily. The conveyor surface must also be durable, of low cost and of simple construction to allow easy maintenance and great fleNiibilit,- to allow the conveyor to be made of small dimensions and thus to use small newel wheels to allow it to be easily fitted to service large mixing and compound processing machines.
According to one aspect of the present invention a conveyor comprises a pair of spaced apart edge drive members, drive means to move said members at the same speed longitudinally of the conveyor, a series of equal 1 y spaced parallel, transversely extending support bars between the drive members and load bearing platforms arranged in overlapping relatitnship each platform having two support bar engagement members one at a leading edge and one at a trailing edge to locate each platform at both cooperating support bars.
Preferably the conveyor engagement member at the leading edge directly engages the support bar and the trailing edge engagement member engages the support bar indirectly. The indirect engagement is preferably b means of the trailing edge engagement member engaging the leading edge engagement member of the next adjacent platform and in this arrangement the support bars are preferably circular cross section bars so that the engagement member can have circular cross section engagement surfaces which engage around the support bars to retain the load bearing platforms on the conveyor assemble.
A preferred material for the load bearing platform is sheet steel because this providers a cheap surface of great durability which is eminently suitable for carrying rubber material.
Further features of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, b way of example only, of one embodiment in conjunction with the attached diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective vie of one end of a conveyor according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a scrap view showing details of the engagement of adjacent support platforms; and
Figure 3 shows a side view of a single load bearing platform.
The conveyor of the application comprises to drive chain sprockets or newel wheels, one of which is shown and designated 1 and at either side 2,3 of the conveyor a continuously extending drive member 4 which comprises a long chain which engages around the newel wheels at either end of the conveyor.
Thus the two drive chains 4 at the to side 2 and 3 of the conveyor are driven in synchronisation. At various spaced apart positions along the length of the side drive chain 4 connection points 5 are provided to transversely extending rigid steel bars 6 which extend across the full width of the conveyor and provide a spaced apart lattice of support bars.Each support bar has at each side a protruding drive and support shaft 7. These support shafts 7 engage upon side supports of the conveyor usually by support rollers to reduce friction although any of the known systems in the art can be used to provide a rigid long support for the conveyor edges. Thus in the present conveyor the transversely estending support bars 6 are carried along the path'of the conveyor, around the end rollers and return underneath the conveyor.
A load bearing support surface 8 is provided b means of a series of inter-engaging load bearing platforms 9. Each platform comprises a substantially flat support surface 8a having a length L in the direction of the length of the conveyor slightly greater than the distance between adjacent transverse support bars 6. A leading edge 10 has a downwardly turned edge to form a leading edge engagement member 11 having an inner radius R1 as shown. A trailing edge engagement member 12 is similarly formed bp a member having an engaging operation which has a width R2.
As shown in Figure 2 each of the platform members 9 is engaged b its leading edge engagement member 11 around its support bar 6 and then its trailing, edge support member 12 is engaged around the leading edge support of the previous platform member 9.
Thus the assembly as shown in Figure 2 is a series of overlapping rigid steel members which are able to be carried around a supporting end roller 1 quite readily because of the pivotal interconnections of the various components. The resultant conveyor has a frigid top stlrface supported between the two edge support rails and has been found to be particularly suitable for carrying uncured rubber material.
