Abstract

A device for facilitating the removal, storage and replacement of the dust cap of a vehicle tyre, comprises a tubular member 1 having an open end 2 formed with a tapered bore 3, the internal wall 4 being provided with a plurality of spaced tapering splines 5 which diverge outwardly from the base 6 of the bore 3 to provide a gripping and locating surface for the dust cap of the valve of a vehicle tyre. The opposite end of the tubular member may be provided with another tapered bore or alternatively the outer surface may be knurled as shown at 8 to provide a gripping surface. Alternatively, the end of the tubular member remote from the tapered bore 3 may be tapered to a point to allow the point to be inserted in the valve to release air from the tyre. <IMAGE>

Description

DESCRIPTION VEHICLE ACCESSORY This invention relates to vehicle accessories and particularly to a device for facilitating the removal, storage and replacement of the dust cap of a vehicle tyre.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which enables a dust cap to be removed from the valve of a vehicle tyre, which enables the cap to be stored safely and which enables the dust cap to be replaced on the valve of the tyre after an operation such as inflation has been performed on the tyre, all without soiling the hands and ensuring that the dust cap is safely stored whilst the operation is performed.
According to the invention there is provided a vehicle accessory comprising a tubular member having a tapered bore provided at at least one end thereof, the or each bore being provided with a plurality of spaced ridges or splines diverging outwardly towards the respective end of the member and providing a gripping and retaining surface for the dust cap of a tyre of the vehicle.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the tubular member is provided with a knurled portion to provide a gripping surface when screwing or unscrewing the dust cap from the valve of the tyre.
In a further embodiment, one end of the tubular member may be tapered to a point to allow the pointed end to be inserted into the tyre valve to release air therefrom. However, both ends of the tubular member may be provided with the tapered bore and divergent splines.such that either end of the device may be used to remove, retain and replace the dust caps of the valves of vehicle tyres.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with particular reference to the accompanying informal drawing wherein: Figure 1 is a plan view of the device of the invention; Figure 2 is an end view taken in the direction of arrow A of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an end view taken in the direction of arrow B of Figure 1.
The device comprises a tubular member 1 preferably cylindrical having an open end 2 formed with a tapered bore 3, the internal wall 4 of the bore 3 being provided with a plurality of spaced tapering splines or ridges 5 which diverge outwardly from the base 6 of the bore towards the open end 2 of the tubular member.
The splines or ridges 5 provide a gripping and locating surface for the dust cap (not shown) of the valve of a vehicle tyre, enabling the device to be located over the dust cap and the latter unscrewed by rotating the device and retaining the unscrewed dust cap therein. The unscrewing operation can be performed without touching the dust cap thereby preventing the soiling of hands and retaining the dust cap in a safe place until the operation on the tyre has been performed and the dust cap is required to be rescrewed on the valve of the tyre.
The opposite end 7 of the cylindrical member 1 is provided on the exterior thereof with a knurled surface 8 to allow the device to be gripped more firmly for unscrewing and replacement of a dust cap.
The portion 9 intermediate the ends 2 and 7 is of reduced cross-section as shown, but may be continuous if required.
It will be appreciated that the invention is capable of considerable modification and is not to be deemed limited to the constructional features shown by way of example only. For instance, the end 7 of the device may be extended and tapered to a point to allow the pointed end to be used to release air from the valve of a vehicle tyre.
Furthermore, as previously indicated, both ends of the tubular member may be provided with a splined, tapered bore to allow each end to be used for the removal, storage and replacement of dust caps. In such a modification, the knurled portion would be located intermediate the two tapered bores of the device.

Claims (6)

1. A vehicle accessory comprising a tubular member having a tapered bore provided at at least one end thereof, the or each bore being provided with a plurality of spaced ridges or splines diverging outwardly towards the respective end of the member and providing a gripping and retaining surface for the dust cap of a tyre of the vehicle.
2. A vehicle accessory as claimed in claim 1 wherein one end of the tubular member is provided with said tapered bore whilst the end remote from the tapered bore is provided on the exterior thereof with a knurled surface to allow the tubular member to be gripped and rotated.
3. A vehicle accessory as claimed in claim 1 wherein one end of the tubular member is provided with said tapered bore whilst the end remote from the tapered bore is tapered to a point to allow the pointed end to be inserted into the valve of the tyre to release air therefrom.
4. A vehicle accessory as claimed in claim 3 wherein the tubular member intermediate the tapered bore and the pointed end is provided with a knurled surface to allow the tubular member to be gripped and rotated.
5. A vehicle accessory as claimed in claim 1 wherein both ends of the tubular member are provided with a splined tapered bore with a knurled surface located between the two tapered bores.
6. A vehicle accessory substantially as hereinbefore described and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
