Abstract

A random symbol generating device comprises a spinning top in the form of a shaft 50 and a polygonal plate 51 bearing a symbol or other indication corresponding to each edge. The plate 51 may be removable and replaced by a different plate. Alternatively, a larger plate with a different number of edges may be fitted over the plate 51. <IMAGE>

Description

Random Symbol Generating Device The present invention relates to a random symbol generating device.
One commonly known random symbol generating device is a dice bearing numerals. A disadvantage with this type of device is that it is relatively difficult to make in any shape other than cubic and accordingly the range of possible symbols is usually just six.
Another commonly known random symbol generating device is a roulette wheel. A disadvantage with this type of device is that it is large and cumbersome, and may yield an ambiguous result if the wheel stops with a wheel partition in line with the pointer.
The present invention provides a random symbol generating device comprising a spinning top which is polygonal and bears a symbol or other indication corresponding to each edge thereof so that when the spinning top slows down it will eventually come to rest on one edge corresponding to a particular symbol.
The device according to the invention is simple and economical to manufacture and is capable of being manufactured or modified so as to have any number of different edges.
Various preferred features and embodiments of the invention will now be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows, by way of example only, a perspective view of one construction of device according to the invention.
Figure 1 shows one embodiment of a spinning top according to the present invention comprising a vertical shaft 50 and a hexagonal plate 51 bearing numerals "1" and "6" corresponding to each edge. The vertical shaft 50 passes through the center of the hexagonal plate 51 which is arranged to be substantially perpendicular to the shaft 50.
In use, the spinning top will eventually come to rest on one edge, thus generating a random symbol.
As previously mentioned, the device may be easily manufactured in or modified to a variety of different polygonal shapes so that the number of different symbols from which a symbol is generated may be varied.
The number of symbols may, or may not, correspond to the number of edges to the polygonal shape.
It will be appreciated that the spinning top could be made with any desired number of edges including an odd number of edges. It will also be appreciated that the spinning top may be modified by making the hexagonal plate removable so that it may be replaced by a plate with a different number of edges. Alternatively, the spinning top could be modified by fitting a larger plate with a different number of edges over the hexagonal plate.
