Abstract

A moulded ceramic or porcelanic body 1 has at least one end cover 3 with an aperture for an exhaust flow pipe 5. The body is covered by insulating rock wool packing 10. Figs. 4 and 5 inside a protective aluminum-plated metal casing (11). The metal casing (11) has end covers (12, 13) made of the same metal, which have edges flanged over end flanges (15) of the body. Both metal covers have holes, each with a neck (16), through which the ends of the exhaust flow pipe 5 project. <IMAGE>

Description

:2:2 -1. - A: 0 1 MUFFLERS FOR EXHAUST PIPES OF VEHICLE ENGINES The
present invention relates to mufflers for exhaust pipes of vehicle engines.
Mufflers which absorb and thus reduce the noise produced by the expulsion of combustion gases have previously been applied to the exhaust pipes of engines.
The muffler is a chamber which provides an englarged volume in the exhaust pipe for the gas flow to expand and cool.
one of the most serious problems that mufflers have is the corrosion they are subjected to by impurities and moisture in the exhaust gases. These gases accumulate in the muffler, and destroy the muffler after a short period of use, mainly due to the fact that the muffler is made out of ferric or steel materials which readily corrode.
Mufflers which use a ceramic body enclosed in a metal casing in order to overcome the effects of corrosion, are also known.
2 Different methods of manufacture are known for this type of muffler, and although the degree of corrosion is reduced, they have many other defects, among which is the fact that the porosity of the ceramic body lets the moisture pass to the outer metal casing which corrodes.
Inner refractory bodies covered by a casing have been used. These are produced by a process in which the temperature of the casing is raised until it has expanded enough to introduce the refractory body, which is retained by contraction on cooling of the casing.
In all of these cases, aside from the accumulation of moisture and its passing through to the casing, the ceramic or refractory part is exposed, and knocks against the casing in the course of movement, which can result in breakage.
The present invention proposes some improvements in the construction of exhaust mufflers and in their assembly, which aims to reduce the problems of corrosion and breakage.
These improvements are based on forming the body of the muffler out of porcelanic material moulded in such a way that it is formed by one tubeshaped piece, preferably with a generally oval section.
0 3 According to the present invention there is provided a muffler for exhaust pipes in vehicle engines, comprising a ceramic body enclosed in a metal casing, characterised in that the ceramic or porcelanic body is made of a tube-shaped molded piece, having at least one end open and which can be closed by a cover coupled over the mouth; the bottom as well as the cover being provided with corresponding holes to insert a collecting pipe made out of aluminum-plated or refractory steel sheet, provided with holes or grooves which connect the inside of the pipe with the chamber of the body which is filled with rock wool.
Two-particular embodiments of the invention are envisaged, in a first embodiment a tube-shaped body closed at one end, and a passage is provided for the collecting pipe. The open end is closed by a cover which is also provided with a corresponding passage for the collector and is made from the same porcelanic material.
In a second embodiment, a tube-shaped body is envisaged open at both ends which permits the formation of an inner support wall for the collecting pipe, and two covers, made from the same porcelanic material, are provided for the tube mouths, with corresponding passages for the collecting pipe.
4 The collecting pipe with a regular section is made out of a refractory aluminum-plated material or refractory steel alloy, provided with holes or grooves through which the gases pass to the expansion chamber, which is defined by the porcelanic body that surrounds the pipe.
The inside of the chamber, surrounding the collecting pipe, is filled with rock wool, which can endure a temperature of 600C.
The ceramic body is encased by an insulating material blanket, which constitutes a shock absorbing cushion, and a sliding pressure coupling means, in the inside of a protective aluminum-plated metal tube-shaped cover, which forms the external casing of the muffler. This cover has its edges widened to form a flat peripheral wing, upon which sits an edge formed in the corresponding cover of the same material, which is fixed by flanging over the wing of the ceramic body. The covers are provided with a hole having a neck, where the end of the collecting pipe fits.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and accompanying claims.
1 A Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1. is a longitudinal cross-section of a porcelanic muffler body according to a first embodiment of the Present invention.
Figure 2. is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the body of a muffler according to second embodiment of the invention.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the body of the muffler in to Figure 2 showing the covers coupled to the ends to hold, along with the centre wall, the collecting pipe in place.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal cross-section of a complete muffler, with the ceramic body covered by insulating packing coupled inside a protective metal easing.
Figure 5 shows in detail the way the metal casing is coupled to the metal covers Figure 6 is a perspective end view of the muffler of figure 4.
In the drawings, the muffler comprises a ceramic or porcelanic tube, in a single moulded piece. Twoembodiments are shown, one in Figure 1 the other in Figure 2. Figure 1 shows the tube having a closed end 2 and an open end, which can be closed with a cover 3.
6 Figure 2 shows the tube with both ends open, each end can be closed with a cover 3, an inner wall 4 provides intermediate support of the collecting pipe 5.
CS 1 The collecting pipe 5, whose assembly is seen in Figure 3, is made out of refractory aluminum-plated material or a refractory steel alloy and it is provided with holes and grooves-6 so that the gases pass out to the expansion chamber 7 which is filled with rock wool 8. The pipe projects through the holes 9 in the respective tube (Figure 1 and Figure 2).
The ceramic body 1 is surrounded by an insulating blanket 10, for packing, which permits it to fit tightly inside an outer aluminum-plated, metal tube-shaped casing 11, and acts as a shook absorber. The ends of the casing 11 are closed by covers 12 and 13, made out of the same material, by flanging edges 14 over a peripheral rim or wings 15 on the tube casing 11.
Each of the covers is provided with a hole having a neck 16 which fits tightly over the ends of the collecting pipe 5.
