Description

1 APPARATUS FOR MOLDING LOST FOAM PATTERN SECTIONS
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to injection molding apparatus, and more particularly to apparatus for molding evaporable foam patterns to be used in a lost foam casting process. Still more particularly, the invention relates to such apparatus including an internal parting area.
Conventional apparatus for injection molding lost foam patterns includes first and second mold pieces which mate to define therebetween a mold cavity. In the case of such mold pieces defining an annular or endless mold cavity, the mold pieces have substantially abutting or mating surface portions surrounded by the mold cavity. These surface portions define what is known as an internal parting area, i.e., a parting area that is surrounded by the mold cavity. The mold pieces also have substantially abutting or mating surface portions located exteriorly of the mold cavity. These surface portions define what is known as an external parting area.
It is known to provide venting in an external parting area by providing vent grooves in the mating surface portion of at least one of the mold pieces. These grooves are typically approximately.010 inches deep and.500 inches wide and extend from the mold cavity to the periphery of the mold piece. Such vents aid in filling the mold cavity with foam beads by allowing air transporting the beads into the mold cavity to escape from the mold cavity.

The invention provides apparatus for molding a foam pattern to be used in a lost foam casting process, the apparatus comprising first and second mold pieces defining a mold cavity, and an internal parting area, and means for venting the internal parting area.
The invention also provides molding apparatus comprising first and second mold pieces defining an endless mold cavity, the mold pieces including mating surface portions which are surrounded by the mold cavity and which define therebetween a space, and means for venting the space.
The invention also provides molding apparatus comprising first and second mold pieces defining a mold cavity and including respective first and second internal surface portions defining an internal parting area, the first internal surface portion including a radially outer portion spaced a first distance from the second internal surface portion, and a radially inner portion spaced a second distance greater than the first distance from the second internal surface portion so as to define a space between the radially inner portion and the second internal surface portion, and means for ventIng the space.

other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon review of the following detailed description, claims and drawings.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, partially in section, of an apparatus embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view taken along line.-2-2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view taken along line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view taken along line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view taken along line 5-5 in Fig. 3.
Before one embodiment of the invention is explained in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of the construction and the arrangements of components set forth in the following description or illustrated in the drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or being carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology used herein is for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
An apparatus 10 embodying the invention is illustrated in the drawings. Conventional portions of the apparatus 10 are illustrated schematically.
The apparatus 10 comprises (see Fig. 1) first and second or upper and lower steam chests 14 and 18, respectively. Each of the steam chests 14 and 18 has extending therethrough a plurality of cooling lines 22, as is known in the art. Supported by the first steam chest 14 is an upper or first mold piece 26 including a first mold surface 30. Supported by the second steam chest 18 is a lower or second mold piece 34 having a second mold surface 38 engageable with the first mold surface 30 to define therebetween an annular mold cavity 42. The first mold surface 30 includes a generally circular internal portion 46 (Figs. 1 and 3) surrounded by the mold cavity 42, and an annular or endless external portion 50 (Fig. 1) surrounding the mold cavity 42. The second mold surface 38 includes a generally circular internal portion 54 (Figs. 1 and 4) which is surrounded by the mold cavity 42 and which mates with the internal portion 46 of the first mold surface 30. The second mold surface 38 also includes (see Fig. 1) an annular or endless external portion 58 which surrounds the mold cavity 42 and which mates with the external portion 50 of the first mold surface 30.
The internal surface portions 46 and 54 of the mold surfaces 30 and 38 define (see Fig. 1) an internal parting area 62 of the mold surfaces 30 and 38. As described in'greater detail below, the internal surface portions 46 and 54 are at least in part very slightly spaced from each other so that air can flow between the internal surface portions 46 and 54. Thus, a small space exists between the internal surface portions 46 and 54.
The apparatus 10 also comprises (see Fig. 1) means 66 for supplying foam beads or other suitable moldable material to the mold cavity 42. Such means 66 is known in the art and will not be described in greater detail.
The apparatus 10 also comprises (see Fig. 2) external means 70 foxventing the mold cavity 42. While various suitable means can be employed, in the illustrated construction, such means 70 includes a plurality of shallow grooves 74 located in the external portion 50 of the first mold surface 30. Such venting grooves 74 are known in the art and will not be described in greater detail.
The apparatus 10 also comprises (see Fig. 1) means for venting the internal parting area 62 of the mold pieces, i.e., for venting the space between the internal surface portions 46 and 54. Preferably, such means includes a conduit 78 having one end 82 communicating with the internal parting area 62 and an opposite end 86 communicating with the exterior of the apparatus 10. In the illustrated construction, the conduit 78 is supported by the upper steam chest 14 and by the upper mold piece 26. The end 82 of the conduit 78 extends through the upper mold piece 26 to the internal parting area 62, and the end 86 of the conduit 78 extends through the upper steam chest 14 to the atmosphere. The conduit 78 allows air in the mold cavity 42 to escape into the space between the internal surface X portions 46 and 54 and then through the conduit 78 to the atmosphere.
Preferably, the internal surface portion of one of the mold pieces 26 and 34 is relieved to assist venting. In the illustrated construction, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the internal surface portion 46 of the mold surface 30 includes a radially outer portion 90 which is located adjacent and extends radially inwardly of the mold cavity 42 and which is spaced a relatively small distance (e.g.,.01 inches) from the internal surface portion 54 of the mold surface 38. The internal surface portion 46 of the mold surface 30 also includes a radially inner portion 94 which is relieved, i.e., which is spaced a greater distance (e.g., between.125 and. 250 inches) from the internal surface portion 54 of the mold surface 38. The conduit 78 preferably extends through the center of the radially inner portion 94 and communicates directly with the space between the radially inner portion 94 and the internal surface portion 54. The space between the radially outer portion 90 and the internal surface portion 54 is wide enough to permit air to flow out of the mold cavity 42 to the conduit 78 but is narrow enough to substantially prevent foam beads from flowing into the space between the surface portions 46 and 54. The increased space between the radially inner portion 94 and the internal surface portion 54 provides improved air flow into the conduit 72.
Various features of the invention are set forth in the following claims.
