Abstract

A workpiece cutting guide comprises a sliding jaw A and a fixed jaw B, and a tongue C fixed to the fixed jaw B and slidably received in a guide slot provided in the sliding jaw A. The guide slot allows relative movement of the jaws in two orthogonal directions so that workpieces of different sizes can be accommodated between the jaws. Guides for sawing mitres are provided in the jaws. <IMAGE>

Description

"Workpiece Support" This invention relates to a workpiece support and in particular, but not exclusively, to an adjustable mitre block.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a workpiece support comprising two support members for being positioned one to either side of a workpiece, and each having means for guiding a saw blade or the like in use along a predetermined cutting line.
Preferably. the support members include a plurality of guide means defining a set of cutting lies, e.g.; +450, 900, -450. Each guide means may comprise a slot or groove provided in a wall of the support member.
Prererably, one pf the support members includes a slide means such as e.g., a transverse tongue, which is received within a slot on the other support member.
In one arrangement the two support members may' be interconnected by a linkage or other mechanism which controls relative separating movement of the support members to keep at least one associated pair of guide means in alignment.
In use, the support members may be clamped against opposing surfaces of the workpiece either manually, or by a separate vice, or by clamp means associated with the workpiece support.
The clamp means may be in the form of a clamping device slidably mounted on the slide means, and which may be locked at a required position on the slide and then operated to urge said other support member into engagement with the workpiece.
One of the support members may be provided with means, e.g., a bracket, for attaching it to a work surface or bench.
According to another aspect of this invention there is provided a kit of parts for making a workpiece support, said kit comprising two support members, a slide means, and means for attaching the slide means to one of said support members, the other support member being provided with a slot for receiving said slide, each of said support members having a guide means for guiding a saw blade.
Preferably, in said kit said slide is "sandvJiched" between said support members.
There now follows, by way of example only, a description of the specific embodiment illustrated in the attached drawing.
EXPLANATORY DETAILS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ADJUSTABLE @@@@@ BLOCK.
The adjustable mitre block huns been designed to take the frstratio out of cutting mitres, in various sizes of timber etc., There are 3 parts in this construction, which are as follows, and graphiced by the accompanying drawing.
PART "A" A sliding jaw, machined to form a bed. In the upper part of the jaw, has been cut left and right angles of 45 degrees and one of 90 degrees. Situated underneath the bed a "guide slot" has also been cut, to take "C'.' PART "B" A fixed jaw machined to form a corresponding bed to "A" which also has in the upper part of the jaw, 45 degree angles cut left and right and one of 90 degrees. A slot is also cut underneath the bed of "B" to align with the "guide slot" in "A'.' PART"C" Consists of a tongue one end of which is permanently fixed into the slot of "B'.' The other is placed through the guide slot of "A" thus giving free travel to the left and right, forwards and backwards.
This directional sliding action enables different widths of timber or other matter to be firmly accommodated within the jaws, and by moving "A" in either direction the angles can be perfectly aligned to correspond with angles in "B" thus completing the perfect mitre.
The adjustable mitre block can be made using either hard or soft wood, or by means of injection mouldings, using any or all known man made materials.
