Abstract

A plug mounted switch cover comprises a plate 1 that can be attached to an electrical plug 4 by way of holes that fit over the pins of the plug. As shown it has a transparent flexible switch cover 2 that covers the switch of a socket when the plug is plugged into that socket. The switch cover makes the switch look and feel different to other switches of the same type, so that it is less likely to be switched inadvertantly, but it still allows the switch to be operated when required. In alternative arrangements, the switch cover 2 may be a hinged box, a box with a hinged lid or an open box. <IMAGE>

Description

PLUG MOUNTED SWITCH COVER This invention relates to a plug mounted switch cover.
Electrical sockets generally have a switch located close to the position of the plug.
These sockets may be used to provide power for equipment such as fridges and V.C.R's which should not be switched off in normal use. At present, switches connected to equipment that should be left ON look and feel the same as ones connected to less sensitive equipment. The power is easily switched off inadvertantly, especially where sockets are arranged in pairs.
According to the present invention there is provided a plug mounted switch cover comprising a plate, that attatches to an electrical plug and an inverted flexible transparent box (switch cover) that covers the switch of a socket when the plug is placed in that socket.
The plate must be thin and of an electrically insulating material so as not to interfere with the electrical connections made when the plug is in a socket.
There are holes in the plate which are placed over the pins of a plug and hold the plate to the plug.
The switch cover is situated on the plate such that when a plug fitted with the plug mounted switch cover is placed in a socket the switch is visible and can be depressed by pressing the top of the switch cover, but it gives the switch a different appearance and feel to usual thus making accidental switching less likely.
specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows the plug mounted switch cover, not mounted onto a plug, as viewed from the top; Figure 2 shows a cross section of the switch cover on the plate; Figure 3 shows the plug mounted switch cover mounted onto a plug which is plugged into one of a pair of mains sockets.
Referring to the drawing the plug mounted switch cover comprises a flat plate 1 with holes 3 arranged to fit over the pins of a plug 4. It has a switch cover 2 which fits over the switch when the plug 4 is plugged into a socket 5. This switch cover 2 is a transparent flexible cover.
The plug mounted switch cover would normally be kept on the plug of a piece of equipment so that the socket to which that equipment is connected has its switch covered.

Claims (6)

1 A plug mounted switch cover comprising a plate, that attaches to an electrical plug and an inverted flexible transparent box (switch cover) that covers the switch of a socket when the plug is placed in that socket.
2 A plug mounted switch cover as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the transparent switch cover is tinted to make it more noticeable.
3 A plug mounted switch cover as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, where the switch cover is a hinged inverted box that is lifted to operate the switch.
4 A plug mounted switch cover as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 where the switch cover is a box with a hinged lid.
5 A plug mounted switch cover as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, where the switch cover is a box with an open top.
6 A plug mounted switch cover as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, where the switch cover is an incomplete box.
