Description

Title: Espagnolette Description of Invention This invention relates to an espagnolette for retaining a window, door or other hinged wing in a closed position.
According to one aspect of the invention we provide an espagnolette comprising first, second and third members, the second member being slidable relative to the first and third members, the first member having a first catch element which is movable by a first operating element carried by the second slidable member between a locked and unlocked position, and the second slidable member corrying a second catch element which is movable by a second operating element of the third member between a locked and unlocked position.
Thus the arrangement provides two locking catch elements operated by a simple mechanism.
The espagnolette is preferably generally elongate and is adapted in use to be received in a groove provided along the edge of the wing or wing frame, the catch elements being adapted to co-operate with suitable keepers provided on the wing frame or wing, respectively.
The first member may be mounted at one side of the second member e.g. above the second member in the groove so that the second member slides beneath the first member. The first and second members may be connected together by one or more fixings which permit of relative sliding movement. For example, the first or the second member may have a slot for the or each fixing to slide in. The first member is preferably adapted to be immovably mounted, in use, in the groove.
The first catch element may be generally hook shaped, and mounted by the first member so as to be pivoted between its locked and unlocked position, by the first operating element as the second member slides relative to the first member. The first operating element may comprise a link which is pivotally connected to the first catch element and pivotally connected to a mounting of the second member.
The third member may be mounted at the outer side of the second member e.g. beneath the second member in the groove so that the second member slides above the third member.
The second and third members may be connected together by one or more fixings which permit of relative sliding movement. For example, the second or the third member may have a slot for the or each fixing to slide in. The third member is preferably adapted to be immovably mounted, in use, in the groove.
The second catch element may be generally hook shaped and mounted by the second member so as to be pivotable between its locked and unlocked positions by the second operating element as the second member slides relative to the third member. The second operating element may comprise a link which is pivotally connected to the second catch element and is pivotally connected to a mounting of the third member.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a wing and wing frame assembly comprising a wing mounted in a wing frame for movement between an open position and a closed position, an espagnolette according to the first aspect of the invention mounted in or on the wing or wing frame, each of the first and second catch elements, in use, engaging a respective keeper of the wing frame or wing respectively to retain the wing in a closed position.
A drive mechanism may be provided for causing sliding movement of the second member of the espagnolette, which drive mechanism may comprise a handle which is rotatable about an axis generally perpendicularly to the direction of sliding movement of the second member, the handle carrying a drive member which interengages directly or through a transmission with the second member.
Preferably the second member of the espagnolette has an operating part secured thereto which is engaged by the drive member or a part of the transmission to move the second member when the drive mechanism is actuated.
Preferably the operating part is located between the first and third members which are displaced longitudinally relative to one another.
The keepers for each of the catch elements of the espagnolette may have a pair of receiving formations, one of which is engaged by a respective catch element to retain the wing in a fully closed position and the other of which may be engaged by the respective catch elements to retain the wing in a slightly ajar position.
The drive mechanism may include means to lock the second member of the espagnolette in a locked or unlocked condition, so that the wing may thus be locked in a fully closed position, or slightly ajar to give both ventilation and security.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE I is an underside plan view of an espagnolette in accordance with the invention.
FIGURE 2 is a side view of the espagnolette in a locked condition, FIGURE 3 is a side view of the espagnolette in an unlocked condition, FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the espagnolette, and, FIGURES Sa to Sc show plan, side and end views of a keeper for use with the espagnolette of figures I to 4.
Referring to the drawings, an espagnolette 10 comprises a first member II, a second member 12, and a third member 13.
The espagnolette 10 is in use, received in a groove provided in the edge of a wing which is hinged in a wing frame for movement between open and closed conditions, but could alternatively be received in a groove provided in the edge of the wing frame.
It can be seen that the second member 12 is mounted beneath the first member II in the groove, and above the third member 13, but the first 11 and third 13 members are longitudinally displaced relative to one another and the second member 12 is cranked so that the second member 12 beneath the first member II is generally aligned with the third member 13 beneath the second member 12.
The second member 12 is slidable relative to the first and third members 11,13, and is secured to the first and third members by fixings comprising in this example bolts IS (which are not shown in figure 3).
To enable this sliding movement to be achieved, the second member 12 has a slot 16 in which the bolt 15 securing the first and second members 11,12, together, slides and a further slot 17 is provided in the third member 13 in which the bolt 15 securing the first and third members 11,13, together slides.
The first member I I has an opening 16a which receives a fastening such as a bolt, to enable the espagnolette 10 to be secured in the groove.
The second member 12 has a slot 17a to receive a fastening such as a bolt for securing the espagnolette 10 in the groove.
The first member II has an opening 18 in which is mounted a first catch element 19 which in this example comprises a hook-like element which is pivotable about an axis A transverse to the direction of sliding of the second member 12, between an unlocked position as seen in figure 3, and a locked position as seen in figure 2, the element 19 being engaged with a keeper 20 (see figure 2 and figures 5a-5c) when the wing is closed and the first catch element 19 is moved to its locked position.
The first catch element 19 has a tail portion 19a to which is pivotally attached a first operating element comprising a link 21, the other end of the link 21 being pivotally connected to a mounting 22 which is secured to the second member 12.
It can be seen therefore that as the second member 12 moves to the right from the figure 2 position to the figure 3 position, the first catch element 19 will be retracted to permit the wing to open.
The second member 12 too has an opening 24 in which is mounted a second catch element 25 which again comprises a hook-like element which is pivotal about an axis B transverse to the direction of sliding of the second member 12 between an unlocked position as seen in figure 3, and a locked position as seen in figure 2, the element 25 being engaged with a further keeper 26 which is identical to keeper 20 but oppositely handed, when the wing is closed and the second catch element 25 is moved to its locked position.
The second catch element 25 has a tail portion 25a to which is pivotally connected a second operating element comprising a further link 27, the other end of the link 27 being connected to a mounting 28 which is secured to the third member 13.
It can be seen therefore that as the second member 12 moves to the right from the figure 2 position to the figure 3 position, the second catch element 25 will be retracted to permit the wing to open.
The second member 12 carries an operating part 30 which is engaged by part of a drive mechanism in order to cause sliding movement of the second member 12.
The drive mechanism may comprise a lockable handle which is rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the direction of sliding of the second member 12, which handle may carry a drive member which is engaged with one or other of a pair of abutments 31,32, of the operating part 30 when the handle is rotated, to cause sliding movement of the second member 12 to the left or to the right respectively as seen in the drawings, although alternatively the drive member may act upon the operating part 30 through a suitable transmission.
The keeper 20 has a pair of receiving formations 34,35, in either one of which the first catch element 19 may be received.
The receiving formations 34,35, comprise undercuts beneath which a hook portion 19b of the catch element 19 is received.
As mentioned above, the keeper 26 is identical to keeper 20 but is oppositely handed and co-operates with the second catch element 25 identically to the manner in which the first catch element 19 co-operates with keeper 20.
The handle mechanism is preferably lockable and so the catch elements 19,25, can be locked in either of the receiving formations 34,35, of their respective keepers 20,26. When the catch elements 19,25, are received in formations 34, the wing may be fully closed, but when received in formation 35, the wing may be secured in a slightly ajar position to allow for ventilation.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the espagnolette may be used to secure a sliding wing in a wing frame in a closed position. In this event, the keepers 20,26, need not have a pair of receiving formations 34,35, as described.
Where the espagnolette 10 is used for securing a hinged wing in a wing frame, the catch elements 19,25, need not comprise hooks as described, but could for example comprise studs which are movable as the second member slides to a locked position where the studs would engage with respective keepers.
The espagnolette 10 may be mounted on the wing or wing frame as desired.
Any alternative desired drive mechanism for moving the second member 12 in place of the handle mechanism described could be provided.
As seen in the drawings, the second member 12 comprises a first part 38 and a second part 39 which are secured together by fixings such as bolts 40 which secure the operating part 30 to the second member 12. If desired, the second member could alternatively comprise a one-piece component.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description or the accompanying drawing, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
