Description

Washable Diapers The invention relates to washable diapers.
There are a very large number of different types of disposable diapers for babies on the market. Such disposable diapers however are generally undesirable from an environmental point of view in that they are made of materials which require very long periods to degrade biologically and contain chemicals which may accumulate in the environment causing potentially serious environmental difficulties.
The invention is directed towards providing an improved washable diaper.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a washable diaper which is shaped to engage around a torso, in use, the diaper having releasable fastening means of the filamentary interhooking type and a shroud means to shroud at least part of the releasable fastening means, during washing.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the shroud means is provided by a pocket-like portion attached to the diaper, the pocket-like portion being folded over at least part of the releasable fastening means, for washing.
Preferably, the pocket-like portion includes a top edge, a pair of side edges and a bottom edge, the pocket-like member being attached to the diaper along at least portion of the side edges thereof.
The pocket-like portion may be also attached to the diaper along at least portion of the bottom edge thereof.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the diaper comprises a front portion, a central portion and a rear portion, the releasable fastening means being provided on the front and rear portions.
Preferably, the rear portion includes a pair of corner tabs to which hook type releasable fastening means is attached, a shroud means being attached to each tab for movement from an in-use position in which the hook-like fastening means is exposed to a shrouding position in which the shroud means substantially covers the hook-like fastening means, for washing.
In another aspect the invention provides a washable diaper comprising a rear portion, a central portion and a front portion, the diaper having a backing layer, a central layer comprising a generally centrally arranged padding of washable absorbent material and a front layer, the central absorbent padding being stitched to the front and backing layers at least adjacent the side marginal edges of the padding.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the padding is of similar outline to that of the diaper marginal edges, the marginal edges of the padding being spaced inwardly from the marginal edges of the diaper.
Most preferably there is at least two lines of stitching, an outer line adjacent the side marginal edge of the padding and an inner line generally inwardly of the outer line.
Preferably, each line of stitching is continuous.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention additional stitching is provided adjacent the central portion of the diaper to assist the shaping of the nappy, in use.
In one embodiment of the invention the diaper includes tab portions extending outwardly from the corners of the front and rear portions, in use.
Preferably, the tabs carry releasable fastening means.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the diaper includes elastication at least adjacent the side edges of the padding in the central portion of the diaper.
Preferably, elastication is also provided at the rear of the diaper adjacent the rear edge of the padding.
Most preferably, elastication is also provided at the front of the diaper adjacent the front edge of the padding.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the padding comprises cotton material.
Most preferably the padding is formed by layers of cotton material laid one upon another.
Preferably also the front and backing layers are of a cotton or flannelette type material.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention a barrier layer of non absorbent material is provided between the padding and the backing layer.
Preferably, the barrier layer is of a waterproof nylon material.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a diaper according to one embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2 is a side perspective view of the diaper of Fig.
1 in a position ready for use, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the diaper of Fig. 1 in use, Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of part of the diaper of Figs.
1 to 3 in one position of use, Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 in another position of use, Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view on the line VI - VI in Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view on the line VII - VII in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a washable diaper according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The diaper 1 comprises a rear portion 2, a central portion 3, and a front portion 4. The diaper is shaped to engage around a torso, in use, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
The diaper includes a backing layer, a front layer and a central layer comprising a generally centrally arranged padding 5 of absorbent material which is of generally I shape in plan as illustrated in Fig. 1. The padding 5 is of an absorbent material, preferably of cotton. Preferably the padding 5 is formed by laying layers of cotton material one upon the other. The material of the front and backing layers of the diaper l is preferably also of an absorbent cotton or flannelette type material.
The absorbent pad 5 of cotton material is held in place by lines of stitching 30 as illustrated in Fig. 1, the lines of stitching being preferably arranged in a continuous path to prevent loose treads.
A barrier layer of waterproof material such as Nylon may be provided between the padding 5 and the backing layer of the diaper 1.
Releasable fastening means for retaining the diaper in the in use position illustrated in Fig. 3 is in this case provided by strips of a releasable fastening material such as that sold under the Trade Mark Velcro, provided at corner tabs 6,7 of the rear portion 2 and front portion 4 of the diaper 1. Hook formations strips 10,11 are provided on each of the rear corner tabs 6, while complementary loop formations 12,13 are provided on each of the front corner tabs 7.
Elastication 20 is in this case provided on the front 4, rear 2 and central 3 portions of the diaper.
In use, to fit the diaper to a baby the diaper 1 is first spread into the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and in conventional manner the front portion 4 of the diaper is folded up and the releasable fastening strips 10,11 at the rear portion 2 are engaged with the respective releasable fastening strips 12,13 on the front portion 4 of the diaper so that the diaper takes up the configuration illustrated in Fig. 3. When the diaper is soiled the releasable fastening strips 10,11, 12,13 are disengaged and the diaper removed.
The diaper is not disposed of but is rather washed either by hand washing and/or in a washing machine and after drying is then ready for re-use.
A shroud in the form of a fold-over pocket 51,52 is provided for each of the hook strips 10,11 of Velcro fastening material. This is of importance to provide a truly washable and reusable diaper. The pockets 51,52 are normally in the position illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 in which the hook strips 10,11 are not covered allowing these to engage with the loop strips 12,13 of Velcro to close the diaper for use as illustrated in Fig. 3. When the diaper is to be washed the pockets 51,52 are folded over the Velcro hook strips 10,11 as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 7 to shroud the hook strips 10,11 and prevent dirt, threads or other material fouling the hook Velcro fabric during washing and/or tumble drying. By extensive trials we have found that by shrouding the Velcro hook fabric during washing the problem of fouling is practically eliminated and the diaper, on re-use, is readily fastened.
The diaper may be of any desired shape for example, there may be a range of different sizes for use with different size babies. It will also be appreciated that in some cases the diaper and the padding in particular may be sized and shaped to provide different diapers for use by girls and boys.
These and many other changes and modifications will be readily apparent and accordingly the invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may varied in both construction and detail.
