Abstract

The invention provides a spray head comprising a nozzle (1) and, in front of the nozzle, a member (3) which can be moved between first and second positions at which it respectively allows and prevents passage of liquid from the nozzle out of the head, and in which the head includes an outlet (7) for liquid diverted by the member in the second position; spraying apparatus incorporating a plurality of such spray heads, and road surfacing vehicles including such spray apparatus.

Description

Spray Heads for Road Surfacing Vehicles This invention relates to spray heads, and in particular to spray heads for use in applicators (spraying apparatus) carried by road-surfacing vehicles.
Certain road surfacings are bonded by the use of epoxy resins e.g. two-component bitumen-extended epoxy resin systems. Such systems are applied by spraying, through a conventional spray head. After use, the spray nozzles must be washed using a suitable organic solvent. Such solvents have usually been allowed to go to waste, or have been collected in a tray placed beneath the nozzles. The tray contents have then been disposed of batchwise, generally without any control over the means of disposal. In neither case is the solvent likely to be satisfactorily treated.
In summary, known wash systems are environmentally unsatisfactory. It has now been appreciated that a satisfactory alternative can be provided.
According to the present invention therefore there is provided a novel spray head, especially for use in a road-surfacing vehicle including spraying apparatus, which spray head comprises a nozzle and, in front of the nozzle, a member which can be moved between first and second positions at which it respectively allows and prevents passage of liquid from the nozzle out of the head, and in which the head includes an outlet for liquid diverted by the member in the second position. Washing of the nozzles can thus be controlled according to the position of the member, and spent wash liquid from what will usually be a plurality of nozzles in any one apparatus, can be discharged to a single holding tank, for controlled treatment and discharge, thereby minimising operator and environmental exposure to wash liquids.
Preferably spraying apparatus comprises a plurality of spray heads of the invention, and is provided with a common slidably movable member which in the first position provides a corresponding plurality of apertures to allow passage of liquid from each nozzle out of its respective head. The spraying apparatus preferably additionally comprises a supply of a liquid to be sprayed and means for delivering that liquid when the member is in the first position; a supply of wash liquid and means for delivering that liquid when the member is in the second position; and a holding tank connected to each outlet, for receiving used wash liquid.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic partially sectional view of spraying apparatus including spray heads embodying the present invention; and Figure 2 is a section (not to scale) along the line A-A in Figure 1.
Fig. 1 shows spraying apparatus comprising four identical spray heads (only one of these is indicated by reference numerals). Each spray head comprises a nozzle at 1 supplied by a pipe 2. Beneath the nozzle 1, a member 3 can be slideably moved (by means not shown, e.g. hydraulic means) between the position shown and the position in which an aperture 4 in the slideable member is immediately beneath the nozzle 1.
The head is constructed in two parts, the supply pipe 2 being mounted in a block 5 which is detachable from a block 6 in which an outlet pipe 7 and an 0-ring 8 are mounted.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a wash liquid from a supply (not shown) is passed through the pipe 2 and thus through the outlet pipe 7 to a holding tank (not shown). The slideable member 3 provides an essentially closed space, around the nozzle 1, and therefore ensures good contact of the wash liquid with the nozzle.
For the purpose of spraying, the slideable member 3 is moved to a position in which the aperture 4 is beneath the nozzle 1, such that liquid to be sprayed, e.g. an epoxy resin composition, passes from a supply (not shown) out of the head, past the spray curtain 9.
The "open" position of the slideable member 3 is shown in Fig. 2 which, in addition to various components shown in Fig. 1, shows also means comprising a member 10 whereby the blocks 5 and 6 are held together, until released by means (not shown) using a lever 11.
A spray head of the type illustrated in the accompanying drawings may form part of the spraying apparatus additionally comprising a supply of a liquid to be sprayed and means for the delivering that liquid when the member is in the "open" position; a supply of a wash liquid and means for delivering that liquid when the member is in the "closed" position; and a holding tank for spent wash liquid. Such apparatus is particularly suitable for use in road-surfacing vehicles which can be simply modified to include a suitable holding tank.
