Abstract

A food slicer for doner kebabs is provided with a deflector (16) for deflecting food sliced by rotating circular blade (13) away from the handle (12), the blade (13) being driven via a flexible drive from a remote motor and projecting through an opening (15) in a housing (10). A roller guide may be provided near the opening (15). A guide plate (19) is hinged to the head (11) to adjust slice thickness. <IMAGE>

Description

FOOD SLICER This invention relates to a food slicer, more particularly a meat slicer and especially - but not exclusively - a doner kebab slicer.
According to the present invention, a food slicer comprises a housing having a head portion and a handle portion, a circular blade rotatably mounted in the head portion, and drive means extending through the handle portion to the blade, the head portion having an opening at one side through which the blade projects over an arc, and deflection means for directing food sliced off by the blade clear of the handle portion.
The head portion is conveniently substantially circular, of a diameter only sightly greater than that of the blade, with a chordal segment cut away to form the opening through which the blade projects, and with a deflector curving away from the opening at the side nearest the handle portion and also curving so as to direct food sliced off by the blade clear of the handle portion. A roller guide may be spaced from the deflector adjacent the opening, to assist feeding of the food, especially doner kebab, to the deflector. The head portion preferably has a hinged or detachable cover on the side remote from the handle portion to afford access to the whole blade for cleaning or replacement, and the cover is preferably secured by one or more screws to prevent accidental opening or removal.A guide plate is preferably provided, spaced from the opening through which the blade projects and hingedly secured to the head portion so that it can be swung towards or away from the blade, to adjust the thickness of slices.
The handle portion may be coaxial with the axis of rotation of the blade, with a straight coaxial drive means through the handle portion and into the head portion, e.g., connectable to the output end of a flexible drive from a remote motor, which is preferably controlled by a foot-switch, thus leaving both hands free, one to hold and move the slicer as appropriate, and the other to hold a tray or dish to catch the food sliced off. A handle proper may extend laterally from the handle portion of the housing. Alternatively, the handle portion may extend perpendicularly or at any other angle to the axis of rotation of the blade and contain bevel gears for transmitting a drive from the output end of a flexible drive from a remote motor to the blade.
The blade may be a disc blade, but is preferably an annular blade having a central flanged fitting for screwing or bolting to a drive member journalled in the housing.
The head portion and handle portion may be separate components of the housing, with one end of the handle portion screwing into the head portion, and the drive means may be disengaged when one part of a connector for a flexible drive is unscrewed from the other end of the handle portion. A flange may be provided on the head portion or on the handle portion to form a guard or shield for a hand gripping the handle portion.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a doner kebab slicer in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a view in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a view in the direction of the arrow B in Figure 1; Figure 4 corresponds to Figure 3 but with the cover removed; Figure 5 is a longitudinal section taken along the line 5-5 in Figure 2, and showing one end of a flexible drive secured thereto; and Figure 6 is a diagrammatic view showing the doner kebab slicer connected by the flexible drive to a remote motor controlled by a foot-switch.
The doner kebab slicer shown in the drawings comprises a housing 10 having a head portion 11 and a handle portion 12, a circular blade 13 rotatably mounted in the head portion, and drive means 14 extending through the handle portion to the blade, the head portion having an opening 15 at one side through which the blade 13 projects over an arc, and deflection means 16 for directing food sliced off by the blade (see Figure 6) clear of the handle portion 12.
The head portion 11 is substantially circular, of a diameter only slightly greater than that of the blade 13, with a chordal segment cut away to form the opening 15 through which the blade projects, and with a deflector 16 curving away from the opening at the side nearest the handle portion 12 and also curving so as to direct food sliced off by the blade clear of the handle portion. The head portion has a detachable cover 17 on the side remote from the handle portion 12 to afford access to the whole blade 13 for cleaning or replacement, and the cover is secured by screws 18 to prevent accidental opening or removal. A guide plate 19 spaced from the opening 15 is hingedly secured to the head portion 11 by screws 20 and can be swung towards or away from the blade 13 projecting from the opening, to adjust the tbickness of slices.
The handle portion 12 is coaxial with the axis of rotation of the blade 13, with a straight coaxial drive means 14 through the handle portion and into the head portion 11, e.g., connectable to the output end of a flexible drive 21 from a remote motor 22, (Figure 6) which is controlled by a foot-switch 23, thus leaving both hands free, one to hold and move the slicer as indicated by a double-ended arrow in Figure 6, and the other to hold a tray or dish 24 to catch the food 25 sliced off.
The blade 13 is an annular blade having a central flanged fitting 26 for bolting to a drive member 27 journalled in the housing 10.
The head portion 11 and handle portion 12 are separate components of the housing 10, with one end of the handle portion screwing into the head portion, and the drive means may be disengaged when a connector 28 for the flexible drive is unslipped from the handle portion 12.
