Abstract

The latch system is for mounting a beam 3 to a track fixed to a support structure 4 such that the beam is slidable along the track and holdable at any one of a number of preselected positions therealong. The track 4 has a plurality of apertures 40 and a beam carrier 1 has a first portion 5 for attaching to one end of the beam, preferably pivotally to allow a degree of pivotal movement of the beam and a second portion 6 of the beam carrier 1 slidingly engages the track 4. A latch 2 is mounted pivotally to the beam carrier 1 and may engage releasably with any one aperture 40 in the track 4 to prevent sliding movement of the beam carrier along the track. In the embodiment of Figures 1-8, latch 2 comprises a cylindrical latch pin (11, Figure 4) and U-shaped mounting cradle (10, Figure 4) to which pin (11) is affixed. Cradle (10) is mounted pivotally to beam carrier 1 by pivot pin 14 and the latch is biassed into engagement with aperture 40 by leaf spring 15. Both ends of the beam may have a captive latch (Figure 9). Figures 10-12 show a rectangular latch (2) with a lever (13) attached to second portion (6) of the beam carrier. The beam may be a deck beam or a garment rail in a lorry or transport container. <IMAGE>

Description

CAPTIVE LATCH SYSTEM The present invention relates to a captive latch system for mounting a beam to a support structure such as, for example, a wall such that the beam is then movable along a sliding axis and lockable at any one of a number of preselected points along said sliding axis. More particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to a captive latch system for mounting a beam by opposite ends thereof to an opposing pair of walls such as for example, those of a transport vehicle.
As used herein, the term "beam" includes such diverse structures as a strut of a shelf, a rail for hanging garments and a beam for supportiny a floor.
A need has been identified for a slidable mount to affix deck beams and garments rails to the walls of a lorry or transport container. Currently such beams are installed in keyed slots provided in tracks affixed to the side walls of the vehicle or container. These conventional beam mounts are secure but suffer the problem that when it is desired to reposition the beam it is necessary to disengage the beam from the wall mounted tracks, risking loss of or damage to the beam.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome this problem.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a captive latch system for mounting a beam to a support structure such that the beam is then movable along a sliding axis and lockable at any one of a number of preselected points along said sliding axis, said system comprising: a track affixable to a support structure and having a plurality of apertures therein spaced at intervals therealong; a beam carrier having a first portion for attaching to one end of a beam and a second portion for engaging slidingly said track; and a latch means, mounted pivotally to said beam carrier, for locking releasably with any one of said apertures in said track to prevent sliding movement of the beam carrier along the track.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a captive latch apparatus for mounting a beam between two substantially parallel support structures such that each end of the beam is then movable along a sliding axis and lockable at any one of a number of preselected points along said sliding axis, said apparatus comprising: a pair of tracks, each affixable to an opposing one of a pair of substantially parallel support structures and having a plurality of apertures therein disposed at spaced intervals therealong; a pair of beam carriers, each said beam carrier having a first portion for attaching to an opposite end of a beam and a second portion for engaging slidingly a respective one of said pair of tracks; and a pair of latch means, each mounted pivotally to a respective one of said pair of beam carriers for releasably locking with any selected one of said apertures in the respective one of said pair of tracks.
It is preferred that the end of the beam is attached to the first portion of the beam carrier by articulation means. In this case a preferred form of articulation means comprises a pivot pin which projects through the end of the beam and runs in a slot means provided in the first portion of the beam carrier.
Alternatively the slot means may be provided in the end of the beam with pivot pin means connected to the beam carrier.
The latch means may be mounted pivotally to the beam carrier such as to be substantially wholly accommodated within the first portion of the beam carrier when retracted from locking engagement with one said aperture of the track, in use.
A biasing means may be provided to bias the latch means into locking engagement with a said aperture of the track.
Access to the latch means may be provided to enable manual retraction thereof. Alternatively a lever may be provided to assist retraction of the latch means.
According to a third aspect the track or tracks are affixed to the wall or walls.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: FIGURE 1 is a schematic perspective view of a captive latch system embodying a first embodiment of the present invention; FIGURE 2 is a side elevation of beam carrier of the first embodiment of the present invention; FIGURE 3 is a plan view of the beam carrier of Figure 2; FIGURE 4 is a side elevation of a latch means of the first embodiment of the present invention; FIGURE 5 is a front elevation of the latch means of Figure 4; FIGURE 6 is a side elevation of the captive latch system of Figure 1; FIGURE 7 is a plan view of the captive latch system of Figure 1; FIGURE 8 is a transverse sectional view of the latch system of Figure 1 taken along the line VIII - VIII of Figure 7;; FIGURE 9 is a side elevation of a captive latch apparatus; FIGURE 10 is a schematic perspective view of a captive latch system according to a second embodiment; FIGURE 11 is a side elevation of a latch means of the second embodiment; and FIGURE 12 is a front elevation of the latch means of Figures 10 and 11.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the captive latch system comprises a longitudinally extending track 4 which has circular apertures 40 thereIn, spaced at regular intervals therealong and is mounted to a wall by struts 41 (see Figure 7). A beam carrier 1 is affixed slidably to the track 4 and is locked at a desired position on the track 4 by cooperative engagement of one of the apertures 40 with a latch 2 mounted to one end of the beam carrier 1. A beam 3 is attached to an opposite end of the beam carrier 1.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, the beam carrier 1 comprises a first portion 5 and a second portion 6. The first portion 5 is a three-sided sleeve, having a top 5a and sidewalls 5b,5c, which accommodates at opposite ends thereof, respectively, an end of the beam 3 and the latch 2.
The beam 3 and the latch 2 are each mounted pivotally to the beam carrier 1 by pivot pins projecting through apertures in the beam carrier 1. A pair of corresponding apertures 8 are provided in the sidewalls 5a,5b of the beam carrier first portion 5, adjacent the second portion 6 of the beam carrier 1. These apertures 8 accept a pivot pin for the latch 2.
Similarly, a pair of corresponding apertures 7 are provided in the sidewalls 5a,5b remote from the beam carrier second portion 6. These apertures 7 accept a pivot pin for the beam 3 and are elongated longitudinally of the beam carrier first portion 5 to enhance articulation of the pivotal joint between the beam carrier 1 and beam 3.
The second portion 6 of the beam carrier 1 is a clasp member which is shaped to engage slidinyly the track 4.
Referring to Figures 4 and 5, the latch 2 comprises a cylindrical latch pin 11 and a 'U'-shaped mounting cradle 10 to which the latch pin 11 is affixed.
The latch pin 11 lies within the cradle 10 and an end 12 thereof projects from an end of the cradle 10 by such an extent that it may securely engage one of the apertures 40 of the track 4. A pair of corresponding apertures 9 are provided in the mounting cradle 10, and correspond to the pivot pin apertures 8 in the beam carrier first portion 5.
As shown in Figures 6,7 and 8, the mounting cradle 10 of the latch 2 is mounted pivotally to the beam carrier 1 by a pivot pin 14 which is projected through the apertures 8 and 9. A leaf spring 15, to bias the latch into engagement with an aperture, is wrapped around the pivot pin 14 and has one end pressing against the top 5a of the beam carrier first portion 5 and an opposite end pressing against an upper rear end portion 13a (see Figure 4) of the circumferential surface of the cylindrical latch pin 11. The term "upper" in this context is defined as that region of the circumferential surface of the latch pin 11 which faces the beam carrier top or central surface 5a.
The beam 3 is mounted pivotally to the beam carrier 1 by a pivot pin 16 which is projected through the slotted apertures 7 in the beam carrier 1 and through the end of the beam 3.
The beam carrier 1 is fitted to the wall mounted track 4 by sliding engagement of the beam carrier second portion 6 with the track 4. The beam carrier 1 is then free to slide the length of the track 4 but for the action of the latch 2.
The latch 2 is retracted manually by pushing an exposed underside of the cradle 10, and thus also the latch 11, into the beam carrier 1 against the expanding force of the leaf spring 15. Engaged and disengaged states of the latch 2 are illustrated in Figure 6, nominal positions of the latch pin front end 12 and the leaf spring 15 in the disengaged state being denoted as 12' and 15', respectively. The leaf spring 15 biases the latch pin 11 outwardly urging the front end 12 thereof into engagement with a track aperture 40. A bevelled rim 12a to the latch pin front end (see Figure 4) assists location of the latch pin 11 in an incompletely aligned track aperture 40.
The beam carrier 1 may thus be slid the length of the track 4 by holding latch pin 11 in a retracted position. Alternatively, if the latch pin 11 is released following disengagement from a first track aperture 40 and sliding displacement of the beam carrier 1 along the tack 4, it will automatically engage the next aperture 40 that is reached along the track 4.
In a preferred embodiment of the second aspect of the present invention (see Figure 9) a captive latch is fitted to each end of a beam 3. The beam 3 is then mounted by its ends to each of an opposing pair of walls, each wall having one of a parallel pair of tracks 4a,4b affixed thereto. Using this apparatus to mount the beam 3 between the sidewalls of a lorry it is a simple procedure to reposition the beam 3 along the tracks 4a,4b by alternately relocating the latch pins 11a and 11b of the latches 2a and 2b. The slotted apertures 7 of the pivotal joint between the beam carrier 1 and beam 3 provide the necessar articulation to allow the ends of the beam 3 to be displaced independently of each other along the respective track 4a,4b at least as far as the next aperture 40.
Extreme positions of the beam 3 as it hinges about one end are labelled 3' and 3" in Figure 9.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, that the present invention not only overcomes the risk of beam loss or damage associated with the aforementioned prior art but also facilitates repositioning of the beam 3, reducing the physical effort required to move the beam 3.
Furthermore, the design of the latch 2 is compact, simple and provides a secure means of locking the beam while providing support thereto.
Although the invention has been described as having one beam 3 mounted to a single track 4 or pair of parallel tracks 4a,4b, provided that the track 4 or tracks 4a,4b are of sufficient capacity any number of beams 3 may be mounted thereto. There is also no restriction on the orientation of the track 4 or tracks 4a,4b although the vertical orientation is used in the majority of applications. In this case, the beam or beams attached to each track may be store5 out of use immediately adjacent one end of the tracks.
Referring now to Figures 10 to 12, there is shown as a second embodiment cf captive latch system, a system similar to that shown in Figures 1 to 9. In this embodiment, the latch 2 is rectangular in cross section with a bevelled upper face. The apertures 40b in the track 4 are correspondingly rectangular.
In this embodiment there is shown a lever 13 attached to the second portion 6 of the beam carrier and movable along an arcuate slot 14 in a side of the first portion 5 so as to move the latch 2 into or out of engagement with an aperture 40b. A similar lever arrangement may be incorporated into the first embodiment of the invention.

Claims (8)

CLAIMS:
1. A captive latch system for mounting a beam to a support structure such that the beam is then movable along a sliding axis and lockable at any one of a number of preselected points along said sliding axis, said system comprising: a track affixable to a support structure and having a plurality of apertures therein spaced at intervals therealong; a beam carrier having a first portion for attaching to one end of a beam and a second portion for engaging slidingly said track; and a latch means, mounted pivotally to said beam carrier, for locking releasably with any one of said apertures in said track to prevent sliding movement of the beam carrier along the track.
2. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said end of the beam is attached to the first portion of the beam carrier by articulation means.
3. A system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the articulation means comprises a pivot pin which projects through the end of one of the beam and the beam carrier and runs in a slot means provided in the other of the beam carrier and the beam.
4. A system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the latch means are so mounted pivotally to the beam carrier as to be substantially wholly accommodated within the first portion of the beam carrier when retracted from locking engagement with one said aperture of the track.
5. A system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein biasing means are provided to bias the latch means into locking engagement with a said aperture of the track.
6. A system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein lever means are provided to assist retraction of the latch means.
7. A captive latch system for mounting a beam to a support structure substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
8. A captive latch apparatus for mounting a beam between two substantially parallel support structures such that each end of the beam is then movable along a sliding axis and lockable at any one of a number of preselected points along said sliding axis, said apparatus comprising: a pair of tracks, each affixable to an opposing one of a pair of substantially parallel support structures and having a plurality of apertures therein disposed at spaced intervals therealong; a pair of beam carriers, each said beam carrier having a first portion for attaching to an opposite end of a beam and a second portion for engaging slidingly a respective one of said pair of tracks; and a pair of latch means, each mounted pivotally to a respective one of said pair of beam carriers for releasably locking with any selected one of said apertures in the respective one of said pair of tracks.
