Description

A CONTAINER WITH LID The invention relates to a container with lid both being made from plastic material, the wall of the container along its upper edge being provided wit a thickened portion and the lid with a substantially U-shaped rim with an internal cavity sch that the lid can be pressed onto the container and the upper edge of the container may snap into the cavity of the lid, the container near the upper edge being provided with a radially extending flange with a collar near its outer circumference and extending mainly perpendicular to it such that between the wall of the container and the collar one leg of the U-shaped rim of the lid may come to lie, said collar, at least partially, being pivotably executed for making the free lower rim of the lid attainable and to remove the lid from the container.
Such a container with lid is known from EP-A-O 132 897. With this known container with lid the connection between the outer circumference of the flange and the collar connected to this is executed such and the collar is such flexible that the collar as a whole can be turned over and so can extend downwardly as seen from the upper edge of the container. Said collar has to be sufficiently flexible because it is provided with a inwardly extending portion at its free upper edge, which portion is coming to lie over an outwardly extending nose, which is connected to the lid.
When mounting the lid on the container in each case the collar has to give way to make it possible that the thickened portions of the downwardly extending leg of the lid pass between the collar and the wall of the container. So the collar has to be sufficiently flexible. This may cause objections when a number of containers are placed one beside each other and are pressed against each other.
When the collar can be completely turned over it cannot be observed whether a container was already opened before. It is tried to meet this by executing the connection between flange and collar locally with reduced thickness so that near this pivot point rupture may occur when the collar is pressed too much outwardly. Because this pressing outwardly, however, has to take place also when the lid is mounted on the container, the lid may be removed from the container when the collar is carefully pressed somewhat outwardly so that no rupture at the connecting place occurs.
According to the invention there is provided a container with lid in which the wall of the container along its upper edge is provided with a thickened portion and the lid with a substantially U-shaped rim with an internal cavity such that the lid can be pressed onto the container and the upper edge of the container can snap in the cavity of the lid, the container near its upper edge being provided with a radially extending flange with a collar near its outer circumference and extending mainly perpendicular to it such that between the wall of the container and the collar one leg of the U-shaped rim of the lid may come to lie, said collar, at least partially, being pivotally executed for making the free lower rim of the lid attainable and to remove the lid of the container wherein the collar is substantially cylindrical and comprises a part extending at the other side of the flange, stiffening ribs being provided between this portion and the wall of the container and running in axial planes, a part of the flange and of the adjacent collar, positioned between two ribs, being connected to the further parts of the flange and the collar by means of incision lines such that this part can be broken away to make the removal of the lid of the container possible, the free, mainly cylindrical leg of the rim of the lid having a length being substantially equal to the distance between the upper edge of the container and its flange and the outer diameter of said leg of the rim of the lid being only somewhat smaller than the inner diameter of the collar of the container.
Thus the invention is to remove the above mentioned objections and to that end it is provided, that the collar is substantially cylindrical and comprises a portion extending at the other side of the flange, stiffening ribs being provided between this portion and the wall of the container and running in axial planes, a part of the flange and of the adjacent collar, positioned between two ribs, being connected to the further parts of the flange and the collar by means of incision lines such that this part can be broken away to make the removal of the lid of the container possible, the free substantially cylindrical leg of the rim of the lid having a length being substantially equal to the distance between the upper edge of the container and its flange, the outside diameter of said leg of the rim of the lid being only somewhat smaller than the inner diameter of the collar of the container.
In this way the container is provided with a substantially cylindrical stable collar. By this also when a number of containers is pressed against each other no danger will exists that the containers are deformed and lids are springing off containers.
Because further the free leg of the rim of the lid extends itself till near the flange of the container and extends close along the collar of the container it is almost impossible to remove the lid of the container without withdrawing the portion of collar and flange being in particular provided for this.
In case of a container with lid according to the present invention the flange and the collar connected to this can be executed stable because they need not to be flexible. Only the lid must have somewhat flexibility to make it possible to mount it on the container.
It has appeared that by executing the flange and collar in the above described way a considerable saving of material can be reached. The thickness of the wall of the container can be considerably reduced and nevertheless the desired stability of the container can be realized. It will be obvious that by the saving of material also the production, the transport costs and such like can be decreased.
According to an embodiment of the invention nearly in the middle of its length the free leg of the rim of the lid can be provided with a part running substantially in a radial plane, such that the cylindrical portion of the leg present near the flange will have a larger diameter than the further cylindrical part of the leg.
By this primary a stiffening of the leg of the rim of the lid is obtained by which, again, the undesirable removal of the lid, without leaving traces, is hampered.
Further in this way the flange can be made broader and by this the collar connected to it can be brought at greater distance from the container, so that the container is stiffened. Because also then the free leg of the rim of the lid is close to the collar, the undesirable removal of the lid of the container is substantially impossible.
Further it can be pointed to NL-A-82 02324, from which a container and lid are known in which the container is provided with a flange and a collar connected to this which extends only at that side of the flange which is opposite the opening of the container. Between the collar and the wall of the container stiffening ribs are provided. The collar is provided with a manly radially running part at its lower end, the outer edge of which is provided with an upwardly extending collar so that together they are enclosing a U-shaped slot. The free upper edge of the last mentioned collar is provided with an inwardly directly thickened portion of an outer rim of the lid. When the cover is mounted on the container the collar connected to the container will have to be pressed somewhat outwardly.By this is also possible to remove the lid of the container which afterwards cannot be clearly ascertained.
Between the upper edge of the container and the lid no direct connection is present so that the danger exists that a less good sealing between container and lid is obtained. Also the sealing can be broken by a given deforming of the container and/or the lid.
In another aspect of this invention there is provided a hollow container having a lid to close an open end thereof in which the wall of the container at the open end is provided with a peripheral beading, the lid -having a peripheral rim which is substantially U-shaped in cross section and including a recess such that the lid may be pressed onto the open end of the container to cause the beading to snap into the recess, the container including adjacent the open end a radially outwardly extending flange which terminates in a band extending perpendicular to the outer edge of the flange such that, when the lid is pressed onto the open end of the container, a wall of the U-shaped rim lies between the band and the container wall, the band being hingeable in a region of its length to expose said wall of the U-shaped rim to permit removal of thelid from the container, wherein the band is substantially cylindrical and extends to either side of the flange, stiffening webs extending between the portion of the nad extending on the opposite side of the flange from that facing the lid and the wall of the container, the stiffening webs being aligned with the longitudinal axis of the container, a portion of the flange and band between two webs being frangible along lines of weakness such that said portion may be broken away to expose said wall of the U-shaped rim and permit removal of the lid from the container, the wall of the U-shaped rim, when the lid is pressed onto the container, being dimensioned to be obscured by the band and flange before the portion thereof is broken away.
The invention is further described by means of an embodiment, shown in the drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is partly a view and partly a vertical section through a container with lid according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the container of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a container with lid according to Fig. 1 but with certain portions cut away and with a removed edge portion; Fig. 4 is a cross-section, at an enlarged scale, through a part of the upper edge of the container and the lid mounted on it; Fig. 5 is a plan view of a part of the container there where the removable edge portion is present; and Fig. 6 is a side view of the part of the collar of Fig. 5.
Fig. 1 shows the container 1, consisting of a substantially cylindrical wall 2 and the bottom 3.
The upper edge 4 of the container is provided with a thickened portion 5, as appears in particular from Fig. 4. The upper edge is also provided with a flange 6 and with a collar 7 extending perpendicular to this. The collar 7 comprises an upper portion 8 anda lower portion 9. The lower portion 9 of the collar 7 is connected to the wall 2 of the container 1 by a number of stiffening ribs 10 extending in axial planes.
As shown in Fig. 1 a lid 11 is mounted on the container 1. The lid 11 consists of the upper wall 12, the circumference of which is connected to a short leg 13 of a substantially U-shaped edge 14, the other, longer leg of this being indicated by 15.
About in the middle of its length the leg 15 is provided with a prt 16 extending substantially in a radial plane such that the leg 15 consists of the parts 17 and 18.
The U-shaped edge 14 of the lid is provided with an internal cavity 19 for receiving in it the thickened portion 5 of the edge 4.
As in particular appears from Fig. 4 the distance between the inner diameter of the collar portion 8 and the outer diameter of the part 18 of the U-shaped edge 14 of the lid will be only so large as is necessary to make it possible to mount the lid 11 on the container 1. During this mounting the leg 15 of the U-shaped edge 14 of the lid will have to give way somewhat so that the edge 14 of the lid may snap over the thickened portion 5. Thereafter it is not possible to remove the lid 11 of the container 1 without more.
To remove the lid of the container it is necessary to remove a part 20 of the flange 6 and of the collar 7 connected to this. To this end incisions or cavities 21 are provided near this portion 20 between the flange 6 and the wall 2 of the container and in the flange 6 and the collar 7 such that when a given force is exerted onto the part 20, this can be broken away as in particular appears from Fig. 3. Generally speaking no stiffening rib will be present near the part 20.
After removal of the prt 20 at that place the lower edge of the lid can be pressed upwardly and the lid can easily be removed. After having used a part of the contents of the container 1 the lid can be mounted again by which a good sealing is obtained by the snap-working of the lid over the thickened portion 5. It is, however, visible that the packaging is no longer undamaged.
It will be obvious, that only a possible embodiment of the container with lid according to the invention is shown in the drawing and described above and that many modifications can be provided without leaving the inventive concept.
