Abstract

An electric welding or soldering iron is disclosed in which a suction pipe forming part of the iron draws smoke from welding or soldering, the smoke being piped to waste at a position remote from the iron.

Description

TITLE ELECTRIC WELDING AND SOLDERING IRON The present invention relates to an electric welding or soldering iron.
Conventional electric welding or soldering irons normally comprise a welding head, an electric heater, a handle and a power cord. During operation, harmful or toxic smoke may result from the melting of flux, oil or impurities. If one person is welding under well ventilated conditions, the problem may not be so serious. If a group of operators are simultaneously working in the same building in a factory, the toxic smoke from the welding process may fill up the whole factory building, which can be harmful to the health of the operators. More particularly at the present time, requirements for environmental protection, individuals rights and protection against industrial pollution are continuously rising. Every factory should take necessary measures to improve working conditions.
An object of the invention is to reduce smoke pollution resulting from the welding process.
According to the present invention, there is an electric welding or soldering iron having a suction pipe disposed adjacent the welding iron, in use, to draw smoke from welding or soldering and pipe it to waste at a position remote from the welding or soldering iron.
The invention will now be described further by way of example with references to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 is a perspective view of an electric welding iron with exhaust piping in accordance with the present invention; Fig 2 is a sectional view of the iron shown in Fig 1; and Fig 3 is a sectional view of alternative embodiment of the invention.
Designation of parts (1) Expansible steel pipe (2) Handle (3) Hose (4) Small steel tube (5) Connector (6) Heater (7) Division plate (8) Electric heater (9) Welding head (10) Power cord (11) Induced draft nozzle (21) Inner tube (61) Draft hole (41) Rubber cork (71) Hole With reference to Figs 1 & 2, an electric welding iron includes an antenna-like expansible steel pipe 1 fixedly connected to an inner tube 21 one end of the tube receiving a handle. The rear end of the handle 2 is connected to a small steel tube 4 via a hose 3 or the like. The steel tube 4 has a speed connector 5 for further connection to an exhaust pipe or exhaust fan feeding into an exhaust piping system.
A heater holder 6 has a plurality of ventilating holes 61 therein, a dividing plate 7 being provided at the rear end of holder 6 to shield it from an inner chamber formed in the handle 2. An electric heater 8 is mounted in the front of the holder, and a welding head 9 removably received in the heater 8. A power cord 10 connects the heater 8 to a power source, the cord passing through the holes 71 in the dividing plate 7 through the centre of the hose 3 to emerge from the wall of a small steel tube 4 through a rubber cork 41 which is mounted on the steel tube 4. By this arrangement, the power cord 10 is concealed in the hose 3 to prevent interference with the welding operation.
During assembly, when the electric heater 8, the welding head 9, the power cord 10 and the dividing plate 7 are respectively connected to the heater holder 6, the holder is then inserted into the inner tube 21 and so fixed to the handle. Because the dividing plate 7 is connected to the rear of the heater holder 6, when in operation, an air current will be induced into the expansible steel pipe 1 from an induced draft nozzle 11, there being no induction through the heater holder 6.
During operation, toxic smoke from welding or soldering is induced into the expansible steel pipe 1 from the induced draft nozzle 11 to be exhausted outdoors through the hose 3. Therefore, the present invention efficiently improves the working environment and protects the health of the operator. Because the welding head 9 will become gradually worn down, the steel pipe 1 is specifically designed to be expansible to flexibly match with the welding head 9.
In the embodiment of Fig 3 the expansible steel pipe 1 is directly inserted through the handle 2 into the inner tube 21 to communicate with the hose 3 and the exhaust pipe or exhaust fan. Further the nozzle 11 is bent downward to face towards the front tip of the welding head 9 so as to provide a reinforced smoke suction effect.

Claims (4)

1 An electric welding or soldering iron having a suction pipe disposed adjacent the welding iron, in use, to draw smoke from welding or soldering and pipe it to waste at a position remote from the welding or soldering iron.
2 An electric welding or soldering iron comprising an expansible pipe connected to a hollow handle for the iron and having an induced draft nozzle at its free end; a hose connected to the hollow handle; a connector connected to the free end of the handle for further connection to an exhaust pipe or exhaust fan; and a heater holder fixedly connected to the front of the welding iron with a dividing plate to separate the heater holder from the hollow handle in which the expansible tube is arranged to communicate with the exhaust pipe or exhaust fan through the hollow handle and hose to form an exhaust piping system for smoke.
3 An electric welding or soldering as claimed in claim 1, in which the nozzle is bent downward to face towards the front tip of the said welding head.
4 An electric welding or soldering iron substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in Fig 1 and 2 or Fig 3 of the accompanying drawings.
